Good morning everyone. As mentioned yesterday, posted today is a series on the male Common Whitetail (Plathemis lydia) or Long-tailed Skimmer as it's also known. The Common Whitetail, is a common dragonfly across much of North America coast to coast , and is usually one of the first dragonflies to emerge each spring. The male has a striking and unusual appearance. It's white body, about 2 inches (5 cm) long, combined with the brownish-black bands on its otherwise translucent wings, gives it a checkered look and makes it one of the easiest dragonflies to identify while in flight.
I also included in the comment section a photo of an immature male and female for comparison purposes.

This southwest woodpecker looked dapper to me with its black and white attire and splashy red crest.
Pied-billed grebes are often seen floating or diving on Florida’s lakes and ponds. This small pigeon-sized grebe has a short, blunt bill, which is encircled by a black band. These grebes are rarely seen flying, they usually dive and swim underwater when threatened. They feed on small fish, crustaceans and aquatic insects.
Some pied-billed grebes are year-round residents in Florida, and have an extended breeding season. Others migrate to northern states to breed and return to Florida for the winter.
Folk names of this grebe include Dabchick, Devil-diver, Dive-dapper, Hell-diver, and Water Witch.
I found this one along Alligator Alley Trail at Circle B Bar Reserve. Polk County Florida.
One of my dearest friends is a crocheting machine. I don't know that she intends for her gifts to be worn primarily by my dogs, but I think they look better in pictures than I do.

Male Bearded Tit (again). Despite what appeared to be perfect weather last weekend (sunny and very light wind), the Beardies kept to themselves. However stumbled upon a small group of them around the corner which made up for it.
Sadly coming towards the end of their display season when they perch high on the reeds to show off to each other.

The subspecies of Yellow Wagtail that breeds in Britain is flavissima, which means very yellow, as opposed to the nominate Continental breeding subspecies flava, which just means yellow. The two are pretty similar from the neck down but our British flavissima is also yellow on the throat, cheeks and eyebrow with a complementary green crown and eyestripe. The British Yellow Wagtail population has been in steep decline particularly since the 1980s. Between 1967 and 2013 the breeding population dropped by nearly 75% with the losses mainly from the margins of its distribution. It is now largely found in central and eastern England but has all-but disappeared from the uplands where it used to nest in may-meadows. Now it nests in damp places, low-lying farmland and river valleys. It increasingly nests in arable crops (eg rape, root crops and peas) but feeds mainly in pasture or along drainage ditches.
All races of Yellow Wagtail winter in sub-Saharan West Africa where they roost communally in reedbeds. I have also seen thousands of Yellow Wagtails roosting in wetland reedbeds in the Middle East where all races occur together. I photographed this dapper male on a farm track in South Yorkshire where there were arable crops and drainage ditches.
Hard to pass up the opportunity to photograph characters like this, so out came the iphone.
