For those that don't know me, I'm currently on a weight loss journey. Part of this journey includes me riding my bike - 100 kilometres every week and to build up from that figure to reach 200 kilometres.

For the first two days of the week, the ride is with people who are fast and fit - this is excellent in that I have to work to keep up. My friends also know all of the bike paths around SEQ and I've learnt how to get to a lot of places safely and not having to share the road with cars for the great majority of the travel time.

The rest of the week is a combination of me pushing myself to do better and keep an eye on the time over distance but I do like to have one day a week where I ride at my own pace and stop and take photos along the way.

Yesterday was 'that' day for me. I'll publish a little more about that journey soon but for now, I wanted to share this image of "Stranger number 27" aka "Daniel"

Now, dear readers - this is where I need you.

Daniel is very well known and apparently famous. The poor bloke though - I just have no idea who he was / is or how famous he is. I do admit that I had a laugh and asked Daniel if he was trying to do my head in which he assured me he wasn't.

On the ride home I was racking my brain on how I could get my hands on some facial recognition software so that I don't have to go crawling through the web trying to find this gentleman!

So - let me tell you about Daniel and hopefully, someone out there in the WWW will know who this is and tell me. I'm sure when I find out I'll be kicking myself that I didn't make Daniel stay longer and do a series of poses LOL

OK - Daniel is a composer and was using the guitar to write music. He is a musician and has worked with many an orchestra before. He has an accent and a lovely smile and wicked sense of humour. I mean - to torture me and not tell me who he is is just about driving me nuts! I can see it now, I'll be on old woman of 99 and on my death bed still be wondering who he is!

Either way, it was a wonderful ride, I got some great photos of my journey that day and topped it off with meeting Daniel. If anyone knows how to gain access to some facial recognition software - please let me know. Oh, and Daniel, when you read this, could you give me another hint.....like what letter your surname starts with! LOL

"Occupied"

Daniel Brodo and Bill Wheelock

Phantom Galleries is proud to present Occupied: works by Daniel Brodo and Bill Wheelock, curated by Daniel Brodo. Located in Phantom Galleries’ Downtown Los Angeles space the show opens on September 13th, the evening of the Downtown Artwalk and remains on display throughout October.

The word “Occupied,” declares that a space has been claimed—a strategy that Phantom Galleries deploys to the benefit of both the empty storefronts that host artwork and the public who sees it. Occupations in terms of our jobs, have taken over our identities; while the term Occupation in reference to foreign lands is a euphemism for aggressive seizure. From a sign on a train seat, to the sign on the bathroom door, “Occupied” designates ownership like a flag: this space is currently being used, even in the tenant’s absence.

The works in this exhibition are by two artists who are preoccupied with the political, emotional, and psychological issues of presence, and the aesthetics and politics of its display. To what degree does squatting equal ownership or ownership equal power?

Brodo occupies his time producing labor-intensive site and time specific works, which, while they approach classicist themes of sculpture, drawing, and architecture with a child-like enthusiasm, lack a child’s naiveté. One Hundred loosely modeled terracotta figure studies perch on ramshackle stands cobbled together out of scrap wood. Upon closer inspection, the figures are revealed to be both heavily armed and naked.

Bill Wheelock's long-exposure photographs spell out words written in fire, created by waving a candle in the dark. Trails of flame cast an eerie glow back on the writer who appears as a ghost image behind each letter. The words depicted in a hellish fire font, reveal the fear of terror latent in the refrains of children’s stories.

Phantom Galleries LA is a Los Angeles County-based organization that transforms unoccupied storefronts and spaces into temporary art galleries. Exhibits are curated by local arts organizations, Los Angeles-based galleries, independent curators, and Los Angeles-based artists. The project gives artists an opportunity to exhibit their work, while promoting the creative community to a broader audience and keeping the area looking vital and culturally exciting.
