The Chateau le Vin fund raiser was a great event held in Wasilla, Alaska in June 2012 as a fund raiser for the performing arts. I was lucky enough to be asked to shoot at this event even though I had no clue what I was doing. I was able to shoot with some of the performers before the show started while they were practicing. During the show I was seated far from the stage and flash wasn't allowed so some of the photos are grainy and slightly blurry. This is one of the events from Alaska I really miss - but I hope these events continue - what a blast!
Note - even though a lot of the performers are belly dancers, the theme for this event was 1890s Paris - and the costumes are so cool.
A morris dance is a form of English folk dance usually accompanied by music. It is based on rhythmic stepping and the execution of choreographed figures by a group of dancers. Implements such as sticks, swords, and handkerchiefs may also be wielded by the dancers. In a small number of dances for one or two men, steps are performed near and across a pair of clay tobacco pipes laid across each other on the floor.
There are claims that English records of the morris dance dating back to 1448 exist, but these are open to dispute. There is no mention of "morris" dancing earlier than the late 15th century, although early records such as Bishops' "Visitation Articles" mention sword dancing, guising and other dancing activities as well as mumming plays. Furthermore, the earliest records invariably mention "Morys" in a court setting, and both men and women are mentioned as dancing, and a little later in the Lord Mayors' Processions in London. It is only later that it begins to be mentioned as something performed in the parishes. There is certainly no evidence that it is a pre-Christian ritual, as is often claimed.

We went with friends to a night club somewhere in League City or Baytown called Big Texas. Unfortunately, I have managed to psych myself out when it comes to dancing to the point where I don't know if I'll ever get over it.
When Amanda was recovering from knee surgery, she psyched herself out over getting her foot over the threshold at the back door. It's only an inch or so high, but lifting her foot was incredibly painful, and her real fear was that she would either bump her toe on it, or slip on her crutches, and tear her knee up again. She would stand at the threshold, trying this way and that to figure out the best way to get her foot across. It would literally take 20 minutes to go in or out of the door, which was wide open in the dead of what passes for winter here.
In the end, whether she went over it foot first, or backed over it, she had to lift her foot to get across. And the issue went on and on, even though the threshold and her need to cross it never changed. There WAS no good way to do it, but that didn't stop her from balking, and trying to find a way around it.
That's how I feel about dancing now. Intellectually, I am well aware that nobody gives a damn if I suck at it. I know although there are 'steps' that should be followed if you want to dance 'country-western', there are WIDE latitudes and lots of room for interpretation - unless you plan to dance with strangers. Then the rules kinda count a little more, or there's gonna be a train wreck. (wink)
But for some reason, my psyche has built up this wall that keeps me off the dance floor, and it pisses me off. Not because I give a crap about getting out and dancing. It pisses me off because I know Jo Ann would love to go out dancing, and unless I do, she won't.
But mostly it pisses me off because I don't like limiting myself just because of the bashful gene I was born with.
A traditional Indonesian dance involving lots of colour! I had found a great position but was then called away so by the time I got back I had these microphones blocking my view! They should have had stage hands to remove during all the dances really.

Today Helen and i drove to the Cherokee Nation to observe the gathering of many native American tribes for a celebration of their native dance and musical traditions.
It was all wonderful and we had a great time. Will post more later.
