Our backyard bluebird, Daddy III. Raising babies is hard on bluebirds, especially in hot weather. Late summer broods have lower rates of survival as well. I have my box rigged so that I can easily move it so it stays in afternoon shade. You can see that Daddy's feathers are worn from hitting the box hole on the fly. I sand the sharp edges off the holes of new boxes to help with this. Our beautiful world, pass it on.
Daddy's mate recently disappeared with four eggs in the box. She wouldn't abandon a clutch, so I doubt that she is alive. Daddy is still in the yard and protecting the box from some chickadees that want to move in. Hopefully he will find another mate and bring her here.
Here is a macro of a Crane Fly found in Swineholes Wood. When I was a little boy (that's a long time ago I here you gasp!) we used to call them Daddy Long Legs. As it was early morning, he sat still enough for me to get the tripod out and do some careful manual focusing - a rare treat!
Daddy's mate was killed recently by a House Sparrow. He is leading around four recent fledglings and schooling them on survival skills. They aren't spending much time in the yard. Hopefully Daddy will find another mate and bring her here. I've trapped two male sparrows, but the one I think is the problem is extremely wary and has a claim on the box. This is dangerous for Daddy and the young. If he catches one in the box he will kill them. Dealing with HOSP's is a necessary part of hosting bluebirds.

Mya LOVES her daddy. But she also really, really liked the tennis ball in my hand. This shot was not planned. We were trying to get her to walk down the path towards me with them, but she wouldn't leave my side while I had the ball so her Dad had to pick her up and carry her away.
