Diesel locomotive D.445.1064 rests for the night stationed at Palermo Notarbartolo on track no. 6.
The Class D445 is a class of diesel locomotives used by the italian Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) railway company and by Trenord. 150 units were built between 1974 and 1988, divided into three series.
The D445 represented an evolution of the FS Class D443 engine, maintaining the predecessor's reliability and operational capabilities. At the beginning of the 1970s FS, during a plan aimed at the expansion and modernization of current service, designed a new version of an unified diesel engine which could also resolve the issue of supplying power to heat carriages in an efficient way through a high voltage Head end power supply (REC) fed by a secondary generator. Previous diesel locomotives were not provided with this and so required the use of a generator wagon (Carro Riscaldo), leading to increased weight. The first series of locomotives, introduced from 1974, were built with curved front windscreens which would be later replaced by cheaper and sturdier flat ones.
The locomotive follows the general unified characteristics of other engines about the chassis and mechanical design. The biggest differences are inside the electrical part: the two MTSC 039/19 DC motors (permanently in parallel) are fed by a three-phase AC generator (in place of a DC one as previous locomotives) through a Graetz Bridge. A high tension secondary DC generator provides a 300 kW/2750 V output, able to supply enough power for 7/10 coaches depending on the type of climatising equipment installed.
The prime mover is a diesel engine is produced by FIAT, type A210-12 supercharged with 12 90° “V” cylinders with a displacement of 95700 cm3 that produces 1560 kW at 1500 rpm. The engine is cooled by a forced circulation of cooling fluid through radiators with two hydraulically driven fans. The alternator is controlled by an electronic PWM control unit which is commanded by a 13 step regulator.
1st series units originally had curved windscreens, replaced in the '80s by flat glas, later used on 2nd and 3rd series units. The locomotives have a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement with a maximum allowed speed is 130 km/h. Like most FS stock, some D.445 have received the XMPR color scheme (white, green, blue).
The third series has 95 units (Numbered from 1056 to 1150), in the same push-pull livery as the 2nd series. These units have five lights on each cab (three headlights and two red tail lights). Like 2nd series, they can be controlled by a control carriage.

While walking South on McCaul Street in downtown Toronto as the sun began to set on a recent evening, we heard some bluegrass music as we approached D'Arcy Street. The closer we came, the louder it became. I have always had a bit of a fondness for bluegrass so, as it became apparent the sound originated from just up D'Arcy Street, I turned to see where exactly it was coming from. On the small front porch, a young man and woman, likely students in this predominantly student neighbourhood, were having a great time playing and attracting passers-by, including me. I grabbed a few quick shots and then reluctantly had to rejoin my friends and move on to a function we were to attend. Perhaps I will get to enjoy them another time. - JW

Voodoo Donut
People love a lot of things in this world... That being said I'd have to say people love LOVE the most, and maybe food might be #2. Today's post was a really spontaneous fun adventure. My friend Jon and Alyssa asked me on Wed night if I wanted to go on a random 1 day road trip to Portland to get Voodoo Donuts on Thursday. Well I actually didn't have much going on, so I went along on the trip. I thought it could keep my 365 really random.
When we got to Portland we walked around downtown for a bit and worked our way towards Burnside to the Voodoo Donuts down there. If you haven't heard of Voodoo you're actually quite sheltered. I might actually say its one of the most well known bakery's ever. Here's a link to there site. voodoodoughnut.com/
The thing about really popular places is they get a lot of hype.... I've probably heard 50 people say, "Voodoo donuts are the best donuts in the world." This spontaneous trip was actually the 1st time I've ever actually went in an got a donut from Voodoo. I'm a pretty adventurous person so I got the donut that is the most "controversial." The Bacon Maplebar. I gotta say.... it was freaking good. We ended up buying a Voodoo Dozen to sample the large variety of donuts that they have without having to take 10 minutes to order to choose from the vast array of funny and inappropriate names they have.
The concept and idea behind this photograph of Jon and Alyssa was to combine the two things I was speaking of earlier. Food, and Love. They are a really cute couple and I thought it would be fun if we did a donut proposal... STAGED OF COURSE! No ladies, he didn't actually propose here. I think my favorite part is the donut names. His donut is covered in white frosting with m&m's and its name is the Marshal Mathers. Her donut is a chocolate donut , with chocolate frosting and coco puffs... But girls love chocolate right? I'll leave her donut's name to you. Voodoo has there menu online... It's kinda dirty.
SO in case you were wondering... Voodoo Donuts most definitely lives up to the hype...
