The Cygnus Loop is a large, relatively faint supernova remnant located in the constellation of Cygnus. It is located approximately 1,440 light years from Earth.
It consists of several nebulae. The most famous of these are NGC 6960 (The Witch's Broom or God's Finger), NGC 6992 The Veil Nebula, and Pickering's Triangle (Fleming).
The supernova explosion that triggered the formation of the Cygnus Loop happened about 10,000 years ago. It covers an area of about 80 light years, or 3 degrees of the sky in the constellation of Cygnus. The shock wave from the explosion produced delicate structures of incandescent gas, the visible part of the Loop known as the Veil Nebula, colliding with the stationary gases of the interstellar medium at nearly 20,000 km/s. The result of this is the excitation of the gas molecules. As the gases release their newly acquired energy in radiation of other wavelengths, the nebula's vivid colors are produced, also observed in visible light.
