Cygnus is an emissio nebula, heated by nearby starts that cause it to emit invisible light. The curved faint red cloud in the mid-upper right area of the image, tucked among green gas clouds is known as the Crescent Nebula.

A better scan of Cygnus. This was shot on Fuji film. It was some old film we had taken off the shelf, pasted its date. We used it to run thru the E-6 in the mornings to pick up any crud on the rollers of the Noritsu machine. For grins and giggles I used a roll to test for the light pollution limit or sky fog in my area. I just pointed the camera straight up and by luck framed Cygnus perfectly. You can see Lyra to the right.
