☝️ Columbia Prof Jeffrey Sachs on Ending the Russian-Ukraine War.

www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/6/17/putin-dismisses-stupid-w...

Putin blasts ‘stupid’ Western sanctions as economic ‘blitzkrieg’

At St Petersburg economic forum, Russian president says West trying to crush Russia with ‘stupid sanctions’, amounting to an economic ‘blitzkrieg’.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the West of colonial arrogance and of trying to crush his country with “stupid” sanctions that amounted to an economic “blitzkrieg”.

Addressing the St Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday, a showcase event this year being held with almost no Western participation, Putin told Russia’s political and economic elite that he would continue his war on Ukraine.

“We are strong people and can cope with any challenge. Like our ancestors, we will solve any problem, the entire thousand-year history of our country speaks of this,” he said.

Putin drew applause from the hall when he reaffirmed his determination to continue the “special military operation” in Ukraine that has unleashed what he said was an “unprecedented” barrage of Western economic sanctions.

He said the main aim of the invasion was to defend “our” people in the largely Russian-speaking Donbas region of eastern Ukraine – a justification that Kyiv and the West dismiss as a baseless pretext for a war that has already led to the occupation of parts of southern Ukraine far beyond the Donbas.

Putin said that Russian soldiers in the Donbas were also fighting to defend Russia’s own “rights to secure development”.

“In the current situation, against a backdrop of increasing risks for us and threats, Russia’s decision to conduct a special military operation was forced – difficult, of course, but forced and necessary,” he said.

‘Committing suicide’

Putin said the United States considered itself “God’s emissary on Earth”, and that Western sanctions were founded on a false premise that Russia had no economic sovereignty.

Washington and its allies were trying to “change the course of history”, he said, to weaken a sovereign, independent Russia.

He said Moscow would continue to develop as an “open economy” despite Western sanctions imposed as a result of its invasion of Ukraine.

Some global currencies were “committing suicide”, Putin said, in a reference to the unprecedented freezing of about $300bn of Russia’s foreign currency reserves.

Russia, he said, would keep dealing with Western companies, and he hoped gas flows would increase via new routes.

Russia would also continue to expand economic cooperation “with those who want it”, he added.

Shortly before Putin was due to begin speaking at the forum, the Kremlin announced that a “denial of service” cyberattack had disabled the accreditation and admission systems of the conference, forcing the Russian president to delay the scheduled start of his speech by an hour.

www.reuters.com/markets/europe/euro-zone-inflation-confir...

Euro zone inflation confirmed at record high 8.1% in May

FRANKFURT, June 17 (Reuters) - Euro zone inflation rose to a record high 8.1% last month in line with a preliminary estimate, more than four times the European Central Bank's target and underscoring its plans to raise interest rates next month to tame runaway price growth.

Initially driven by post-pandemic supply shortages and soaring energy prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, inflation has now become increasingly broad, affecting everything from food and services to everyday goods.

Price growth across the 19 countries sharing the euro rose to 8.1% in May from 7.4% in April, in line with a preliminary estimate published on May 31, the European Union's statistics agency Eurostat said on Friday.

Though inflation is now four times the ECB's 2% target, policymakers appear equally worried about a quick rise in underlying prices as they suggest that rapid inflation is now getting embedded via second round effects.

Inflation excluding food and energy costs, a figure closely watched by the ECB, accelerated to 4.4% from 3.9%, while an even narrower measure that also excludes alcohol and tobacco picked up to 3.8% from 3.5%.

While a 39% rise in energy costs was the main driver of inflation, unprocessed food prices were up an uncomfortably high 9% and non-energy industrial goods prices rose by 4.2%. The price of services, where wages are a key cost, rose by 3.5%.

Concerned by this price surge, the ECB last week said that it would raise its key interest rates in July by 25 basis points and again in September, when a bigger increase will be necessary if the outlook has not improved. read more

The two moves would lift the bank's minus 0.5% deposit rate out of negative territory, ending an eight-year experiment with negative interest rates.

Even this July move may be late, however. Nearly every major central bank has already raised borrowing costs, some several times, suggesting that the ECB may have fallen behind the curve.

The problem is that once second round effects start to take hold, inflation becomes entrenched, eventually being perpetuated via a price-wage spiral as workers demand compensation for the loss of their purchasing power.

While wage growth is still relatively muted, it jumped in the first quarter. The ECB, which has persistently underestimated the inflation surge, sees compensation per employee rising by over 4% both this year and next, twice the rate of their historical average.

The euro zone central bank, which has been forced to raise its inflation projections quarter after quarter over the past two years, now sees price growth at 6.8% this year, 3.5% in 2023 and 2.1% in 2024.

These projections were however based on inflation peaking at around 7.5%, a figure that was exceeded last month.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (Denmark) is now also reacting to the drone flight over Copenhagen Airport.-

What we witnessed last night is the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date. This says something about the times we live in and what we as a society need to be prepared to handle

- We certainly do not exclude any options regarding who is behind this. And it is clear that this ties into the developments we have observed recently with other drone attacks, airspace violations, and cyberattacks on European airports.

The development of technology has improved the efficiency and speed with which global companies conduct day-to-day business in every industry. Technology has impacted core methodology, key analytics, safety, quality and communications. New technology also creates additional vulnerabilities for exploitation of highly confidential data and critical operations. As the cyber-risk profile evolves, regulators are focused on creating and enforcing data security requirements throughout the company, including at executive levels. Panelists explored the role of the general counsel as a strategist in helping the business assess the value and significance of technology with risk mitigation in mind. Panelists addressed best practices for being prepared for a cyberattack, and the role of the legal department in a cross-disciplinary response team. In addition, panelists focused on increased risks for officers and directors and duties associated with reporting to the executive team and the board.
