Burgerville reported a cyberattack that exposed customer credit card information and names from September 2017 to Sept. 30, 2018. Hackers, believed to be part of international cybercrime group Fin7, placed malware on the burger chain’s network allowing them to collect personal data on an ongoing basis. Burgerville has 42 locations in Oregon and Southwest Washington. (Image Credit: Wikimedia Commons/Steve Morgan)
The author of Industry Insights had an exclusive Q&A session with Mr. Zahid Islam, Head of Marketing of Tex Zippers (BD) Ltd, regarding industry situation and suggestions during covid19 pandemic.
INDUSTRY INSIGHTS : As a recognized Businessman, what kind of difficulty you have faced during this COVID19 Pandemic?
ZAHID : When the horrific pandemic of Covid-19 hit China, business friends there repeatedly warned and feared that it would spread quickly to Bangladesh and the world. Being cautious, I consulted with my company colleagues on how to deal with the disaster in the first week of February. Although there was no guideline on specific health care measure at the time, I took many random initiatives such as purchasing masks, sanitizing materials, etc. I also emphasized on keeping the office or home clean and adding vitamin-rich foods to the official food list.
Suddenly everything became random. The government declared general holidays instead of strict lockdown. Then there was the game of opening & closing. As a result, both life and economy became as easy victim of Covid-19. There is no opportunity to borrow from banks, which means the quota is full. Bank interest was rising clockwise. Factories were closed and goods destroyed. Returning money to the bank and paying salaries, allowance, office rent, etc. as well as running cost, became a problem.
Meanwhile, coronavirus continued to spread. I found myself in a tough challenge. I have to save myself, I have to save my colleagues and I have to save the organization.
INDUSTRY INSIGHTS : What is your future business plan within this COVID19 Pandemic? What do you think the previous market environment will return?
ZAHID : Business leaders today are rightly focused on the huge business continuity challenges posed by Covid-19. First and foremost we must ensure that employees are as safe as possible, securing financial sustainability, assessing the resilince of supply chains and reinforcing crucial systems to support unprecedented levels or remote working and online trading – while withstanding as upsurge in cyberattacks.
And I think the previous market will return with “new normal” and it takes certain time period.
INDUSTRY INSIGHTS : Do you think regular Trade Fairs can help your industry to gain more momentum, this year?
ZAHID : Yes, I do believe regular trade fairs can help our industry to gain more business as buyers will more understand our business strategy and it will really help make together win win situation.
INDUSTRY INSIGHTS : About 4 months after the lockdown eased, is the business recession over to some extent?
ZAHID : After lockdown eased, the announcement of opening the economy came. Some factories opened and faced new problems. Many machines are not working because they were not used for a long time. Many workers are not coming to the factories fearing the virus infection.
Our government has already announced bail-out packages for the recovery. Like, due to cancelation of nearly $3 billion worth of work orders, Bangladesh RMG industry got the attention quickly. Around 2 million workers in the industries may be affected by this and on the other hand, around 4 million people are directly engaged with the RMG sector.
Now, it is high time for the government as well as business enterprises to assess the situation and chalk out a long-term plan to control damage. Because business recession still not overcome but it will slowly.
Country’s overall economic eco-system is standing on it, we need to make sure that this should not collapse. But it is also true that it is the peak time for every bank and other non-banking financial organization to asses and reassess their overall lending portfolios and withdraw some of their unnecessary and unwanted portion wisely.
INDUSTRY INSIGHTS : What would you advice to the other businessman during this pandemic? How They Should revamp their Business after this pandemic?
ZAHID : Perhaps we can start by thinking about these four things:
1) Devise a lockdown exit strategy
2) Consider the changing role of the state
3) Use technology to augment, not replace, people
4) Embrace the cultural and behavioral shifts that Covid-19 introduced
INDUSTRY INSIGHTS : How much your Industry is affected during this pandemic?
ZAHID : Due to cancelation of nearly $3 billion worth of work orders, Bangladesh RMG industry got the attention quickly. Around 2 million workers in the industries may be affected by this and on the other hand, around 4 million people are directly engaged with the RMG sector.
INDUSTRY INSIGHTS : Do you think Online Trade Fairs can help a bit and can be added with regular offline Trade Fairs?
ZAHID : Yes, I think online trade fairs can help a lot and can be added with regular offline trade fairs.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (Denmark) is now also reacting to the drone flight over Copenhagen Airport.-
What we witnessed last night is the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date. This says something about the times we live in and what we as a society need to be prepared to handle
- We certainly do not exclude any options regarding who is behind this. And it is clear that this ties into the developments we have observed recently with other drone attacks, airspace violations, and cyberattacks on European airports.

Already back in the early 1990s John Arquilla and David Ronfeldt of the RAND Corporation warned that “Cyberwar is Coming.” Now, almost two decades of the Internet later, it seems to be here. National governments are developing both defense and attack strategies for cyberspace and terrorist groupings are exploring new ways to do damage online. Although it takes place in an intangible space of code and bits, cyberwar is reality and the new digital frontiers of combat have immense significance for contemporary society. Everything from the mobile communication gadgets in our pockets to larger systems like the stock market are vulnerable to attacks and some reports estimate the costs of cyber crime as now on par with the illegal drug trade. The documentary Web Warriors maps the complexities and conflicts involved in the expanded battlefield of global cyberwar and poses intensified questions of digital security and power. It makes clear that the threat is real and the task difficult. Hence, when the Bipartisan Policy Center recently staged a televised simulated cyberattack on the US, the security officials involved in the game failed to defend the country.

A man walks by the poster for the film "The Interview" outside the Alamo Drafthouse theater in Littleton, Colorado December 23, 2014. Sony Pictures said on Tuesday it will release "The Interview" to a limited number of theatres on December 25, less than a week after it cancelled the comedy's release following a devastating cyberattack blamed on North Korea. Sony's about-face came after it absorbed withering criticism, even from President Barack Obama for its decision last week to pull the film, which was seen not only as self-censorship in Hollywood but also caving into hackers working for North Korea. 53202 28 January, 2010 Imitation Web sites of both Google and YouTube have emerged in China as the country faces off against the real Google over its local operations.
YouTubecn.com offers videos from the real YouTube, which is blocked in China. The Google imitation is called Goojje and includes a plea for the U.S.-based Web giant not to leave China, after it threatened this month to do so in a dispute over Web censorship and cyberattacks.
The separate projects went up within a day of each other in mid-January, just after Google\'s threat to leave.
\"This should be an issue with Google\'s intellectual property, also with China censorship,\" said Xiao Qiang, director of the Berkeley China Internet Project at the University of California-Berkeley. \"I cannot see how these sites can survive very long without facing these two issues.\"
Both sites were still working Thursday. It wasn\'t clear what Chinese authorities would do with them, if anything.
China\'s National Copyright Administration has been cracking down on illegally run Web sites and this month issued a code of ethics, but no statement was posted on its Web site Thursday about the Google and YouTube imitations.
Google had little comment. \"The only comment I can give you right now is just to confirm that we\'re not affiliated,\" spokeswoman Jessica Powell said in an e-mail.
China is famous for its fake products, but this is the first time such prominent sites have been copied in this way, Xiao said.
The creators of the two sites could not be reached Thursday.
\"I did this as a public service,\" the founder of the YouTube knockoff, Li Senhe, told The Christian Science Monitor in an instant message conversation. Videos on social unrest in China can be found on the site, which is in English.
The real YouTube was blocked in China in 2008 after videos related to Tibetan unrest were posted there.
Some Chinese quickly welcomed the knockoff YouTube site. \"I don\'t know if it will last long,\" wrote blogger Jia Zhengjing, who has written posts against censorship.
The other site, Goojje, is a working search engine that looks like a combination of Google and its top China competitor, Baidu.
\"Exactly speaking, Goojje is not a search engine but a platform for finding friends,\" one of the founders, Xiao Xuan, told the Henan Business Daily on Wednesday.
Xiao said the site didn\'t have the level of sensitive material of the copycat YouTube site and that it probably was based on the Google China site instead of the version used in the United States.
\"It\'s quite clean by Chinese censorship standards,\" he said.
He guessed that based on the amount of time and work needed to build such a site on top of Google\'s data, Goojje had already been ready before the Google-China showdown started â and that the founder or founders chose the name \"Goojje\" to get attention.
The names are a play on words. The second syllable of \"Google\" sounds like \"older brother,\" and the second syllable of \"Goojje\" sounds like \"older sister\" in Mandarin.
Copycat companies are nothing new in China. \"Baidu included,\" Xiao said of China\'s most popular search engine. \"The whole idea is following Google.\"
Xiao said if another copycat site like these emerges, it probably would be of Facebook â which is also blocked in China.

The recent NHS hack highlights just one of the new challenges government faces as it enters the digital age. Digital public services need to be easy to use, secure and save money. But someone needs to be responsible for setting and enforcing standards, driving the improvement of services and safeguarding against cyberattacks. So, who is it?
To discuss this issue, our panel included:
Ciaran Martin, CEO, National Cyber Security Centre
Janet Hughes, Digital Leadership Director, Doteveryone
Bryan Glick, Editor in Chief, Computer Weekly
Daniel Thornton, Programme Director at the Institute, Chaired the discussion and presented new research.
