Pencil card: Studio Double D Elementary Journalers
On Wednesday, 10/31 we had our parent/teacher conference at Kylie’s school. We expressed our concerns about Kylie staying with “known and therefore easy” work and asked her Ms. Kirby & Ms. Elizabeth to encourage her to move on to new things. We also talked about Kylie’s tendency to want to do her work with the other children, particularly Emma. We are worried about some of the bossy behavior Kylie exhibits when she feels like she has to supervise a younger child so that they complete their work, like the 45 layout, perfectly. Again we asked for Kylie to be encouraged to do some work on her own which will enable her to focus on her own actions rather than try to control someone else’s. Lastly, we reviewed Kylie’s report card.

Karen took me out to lunch on Saturday for my 42nd birthday. We did some Christmas shopping; I bought some shirts at H&M and we read at Starbucks.

Poor sweet Kylie vomited three times on Thursday night causing us to have to change her bed three times. She was sick again on Friday morning. This was the first time she has really puked a lot and it frightened her. We believe it was caused by something she ate, perhaps a bad grape. But it wasn’t until her belly was truly empty that she started to get better. We gave her anti-nausea medicine, fever reducer and pedialyte and by Friday evening she was a little better. The poor darling just lay on the couch all day and wanted either Karen or I sitting with her so that she could put her head in our lap.

Although Kylie wasn’t 100% by Saturday, she and Karen still went out for their usual Saturday morning fun. They brought home Madagascar 3 with a matching circus afro wig. We all took turns wearing the silly thing just to make Kylie smile.

I recently discovered a roll of film that had been damaged during development,with the result that none of the negatives had been printed. This is the first of the images,and shows "West Country" Pacific 34005 "Barnstaple" under the cutters torch in October 1967. The picture was taken at J.Buttigiegs scrapyard,Newport,South Wales.

Week 42 was very dicey (uncertain outcome) at times, one might even say hardscrabble (earning a bare subsistence), and we had to be alert for cutups (pranksters). Eventually, we all got squared away (to put everything in order) even though everyone of us thought outside the box (beyond the bounds of convention).

Sent to me by the poet. Recall that we had met the poet and his family at the Squaw Flat Flea Market which I believe he owns.

In the early 1970s he began work on a long poem that was to become an underground classic when it was published in 1979: Bug Death. Bug Death was created using cut-up and collage texts combined with original writing and represents a major advance in literary technique and thinking, advancing upon the innovations promoted by Brion Gysin and William Burroughs of a previous generation. The book was carefully written, edited, crafted, and designed over several years, in a multi-layered process involving much more than the usual processes of literary creation. It is a unique and stunningly effective combination of poetry, visual art, and documentation that has no real parallel. Nettelbeck's book has had a far-reaching influence on his contemporaries and on younger poets, not only because of its technical innovations, but because of the authentic and deeply-felt lyricism that pervades its pages.
We All We Got” is a celebration of local identity and collage culture, the world's dominant form of expression in the 21st century and the language of our children's generations. In part it is also a play on the philosophical understandings of contemporary expressive forms as understood by the writer and curator, Aaron Rose, and his contemporaries in both Europe and America. But more importantly is the message that we sometimes push off to the side. We are indeed all that we have in this great mystery of experience, and experience is fleeting. With a bit of symbolism we can transcend time, culture, and language with the goal of making the now-experience a little bit better than the past. And that's what these symbols are about, and that's the communication they've always been about. I learned at the Hahnemann University in Berlin that it's about “becoming light,” so that's what I've embedded here with whirls and swirls and symbols, and chickens too. (It could also be a play on words, as "Hahn" is "chicken" in German)
This conductor was a total trip this morning. A few score of students from Japan, Taiwan and Korea are at San Jose State University over the summer. A large group got on the train to go up to San Francisco this morning. The conductor went to the cute ones and let them announce the stops along the way.

Right after playing at the Sunshine Park fountain, we were lucky to catch the ice cream truck. It's hard to see in this photo of a photo but i caught some sweet light in Kylie's eyes as she started eating her ice cream.
We ordered books 1-8 of the Ivy and Bean book series. The set came with Ivy and Bean paper dolls and lots of re-usable sticker clothes and accessories. Kylie has played with these dolls quite a bit this week. I’ve loved to watch her change their clothes and act out scenes with them.
Journaling on the card with red string: knew Kylie was too quiet. I was working in the office and realized that I hadn’t heard Kylie. I popped up and Kylie yelled, “Surprise!” from the kitchen. She had made a pretend laser beam obstacle course in the kitchen. She had taped red yarn in all different directions throughout the kitchen. It was very creative!
Knitting card: I finished knitting Mom’s “Baby It’s Cold Outside” poncho. I still need to weave in the ends and wash/block it. I started knitting Dad’s “Henry” scarf. I’m using Rowan’s Classic Yarns Cashsoft 4 ply yarn in a pretty gray color named “Thunder”. I’ve been knitting on it while watching the Olympics. Both knitting projects are going to be Christmas presents.

Kylie has been adamant about opening the heavy doors at our local library. She loves to show me how strong she is.
You might think it's funny to have a "Life is so, so good" banner next to me running but I didn't really know just how much I loved to run until I was injured and couldn't run at all. The green journaling card states:
With trainer Joy’s help, I had a great month of training. I feel like I’m finally moving past my plantar fasciitis injury that I incurred in May and that waylaid me during June. I am thrilled to be running again!! In July I exercised 27 days and had 4 days off. This month I had:
14 runs for a total of 53.64 miles
5 bike rides for 62.32 miles
7 swims for 9700 yards (5.5 miles)
3 strength training sessions and
2 yoga sessions.

After Olo took us to another kava bar in town who didn't have kava I figred no kava in Wailapa that night. But we ran in to another old friend of mine named Basil. He had a head of kava in his house. He and other people prepared it village style. This means it was shared with friends, and made on my behalf. No one had to pay for it. I had three large shells. South Santo kava is also very good and strong. So for our walk home I was a little stoned.
