Following a quick, overnight trip to Kalamazoo, our train came to a stop within Chicago Union Station's south concourse. On this trip, we rode behind Charger no. 4622 in each direction, first in Horizon coach no. 54539, and then on 54554 on the way back west.
This was my first trip on Amtrak's Michigan service, and it was impressive! While on Amtrak-owned track east of Porter, IN, we were cruising along at 110 mph, which was easily the fastest that I've ever ridden. So long as NS doesn't hose you while on their track, it's a great way to travel from Chicago-southern Michigan.
Here's one from March 1996 of Hallett Dock's CUS (Car Unloading System) in action on Dock 6. Bentonite in open hoppers wasn't always free flowing so it took a combo of a vibrator mounted on the car and a guy working the hoe to scrape out the bulk of it. Winter loads also posed the problem of frozen chunks the size of small cars, but the hammer feature on the hoe took care of those.
And on the south end of the Valpo Dummy is SDP40F #630 on the two-car Amfleet consist. What I'm guessing is the first Valpo train is sitting over there on the left. Note the Phase III paint scheme on the AMTK 630. Very few of the SDP40Fs received this paint--probably only about 6-10 of them. August 20, 1981.
