the house is buried up to the rafters on its east side, and the snow-wave is closer on both the north and west sides of the house. one more storm forecast for tomorrow afternoon, hopefully a break after that. i’m shoveling snow on the front/south side of the house, preoccupied with thoughts of Ukraine, and full of sadness for the world…
I'm supposed to be conserving my phone battery, but I can't sleep, had to visit everyone's great photos.
Earlier in the evening my husband brought me one of my favorite herbal teas and I thought it was funny that it should be in this cup (no caffeine in this herbal tea).
Apparently, even though sleep deprivation has been proven to contribute to illness, heart disease, etc. throughout the world, hospitals haven't gotten the memo!
So, after being awoken to yet again more poking and prodding, I grabbed this shot for Happy Monochrome Monday!
I viewed as many images as possible, made limited comments, now going back to conserving battery energy so I can call my son when I'm finally discharged later today!
Have a great day, stay warm, stay safe ❤️

This is a photo that I made while canoeing of the current in the river flowing over a submerged rock. The image has been mirrored and copied twice to be symmetrical. The detail is best seen full screen.
On my current US road trip, I wanted to catch some Alpenglow. While having sunrise and sunset reds on sandstone (like in Arches NP), which brings out the reds indeed, a white, i.e.snowy, background does work nicely as well. Contrasting, blue sky. That was the goal.
Not being the luckiest with the weather, I basically had one shot about shooting a sunrise, prefixed by two hours of searching and settling for a place where an assumed sunrise might be seen nicely. So, the next morning, I went on a dirt road in Owen's Valley, ran around in the half-dark, avoiding all kinds of cow releases, finding a spot where I could get some interesting foreground, masking a bit the not-green grass. I liked the Owen's River being quite calm, and what I also liked were clouds in the sky giving the light some brightness variations when it hit the nearby mountains.
Afterwards, we continued to Yosemite Valley, but more on that in the coming pictures.

Though the temperature of 10º Celsius is not really low compared to snowing countries, it is still called "cold current" in Taiwan. I stayed at home and avoid being outdoor in such a cold and rainy day.
攝氏十度對很多下雪的國家而言,實在不算是冷,但是對台灣而言,就已經是「寒流」等級。
當然,我這怕冷的,完全避免出門,在家翻舊庫存。

The current City Hall for the city of St. Louis, having housed city government since 1898, is a landmark by appearance, reputation and city designation (since 1971). Efforts to build what would become the current City Hall (seen above) got underway in May 1888 when the City Hall Commission was formed. On April 4, 1889, an ordinance was passed to authorize the Commission to advertise for bids for the building. The original cost was not to exceed one million dollars. The commission chose the design of George Richard Mann, of the firm Eckel & Mann of St. Joseph, from the 37 national entries. His design was titled "St. Louis 1892", obviously expecting it to be completed by 1892. A French-style plan, inspired by the Hotel de Ville or City Hall of Paris, with ornamental dormer windows and former towers, it also recalled architectural elements of the Chateau de Chambord on the Loire River in France.
The construction of City Hall started July 19, 1890, with Mayor Edward Noonan's daughter Zoe, breaking ground. The cornerstone was laid on June 6, 1891. No bond issue was passed to finance construction of the new City Hall, explaining the 14 years required to finish the building. Funds came from general revenue and the sale of city property. Every year or two, the Council, would authorize an average of $110, 000 to continue construction. An ordinance was passed on Sept, 10, 1893 to limit the total cost at two million dollars. Though the building was not completed, it was finally occupied on April 11, 1898 when Mayor Henry Ziegenhein headed a ceremonial parade of city officials from the old building to their offices in the new City Hall. In 1904, the final portions of the building were completed, the Rotunda, the Tucker Boulevard vestibule and the grand staircase, using the design by the St. Louis architectural firm of Weber & Groves. The building was officially completed on Nov. 5, 1904 when Mayor Rolla Wells held an open house for the residents of St. Louis. The final cost of the building was $1,787,159.16. However, the exterior of City Hall was never quite finished. All sides of the building have ornamental dormers called belvederes, each having bare spaces of limestone. These were meant to have carved decorations, yet remained untouched probably due to lack of funds. Despite its incomplete state, City Hall was praised for its "splendid architectural composition," and called "an impressive period piece of craftsmanship". Unfortunately, a poorly executed acid cleaning and years of exposure to coal smoke has left the original pink and orange exterior tarnished.

"Manta Point" sits in a powerful current stream. We got a boat to drop us off at one end and pick us up when we got to the other. Taking the pictures was a physical challenge as swimming against the current requires a lot of energy. It didn't help that they were so deep. The key was to spot them early, arrest my movement by turning and kicking, get the air and go. Take the shot and then just give in to the current and slowly float up. Easier said than done, as at the point of spotting, the manta could have been completely on the wrong side of me.
The mantas on the other hand were happy to just maintain position in the current, letting the water (and presumably plankton) filter through their mouths.
Note the second one in the background!
There are currently three active loading locations serving multiple rock quarries around Recsk. Two of them are on the open line; not that it would bother anyone on Railway Line 84, which hasn't seen scheduled passenger trains for more than 16 years now.
Freight traffic on the other hand is at its all-time peak, with two 22-27 car long rock trains a day, moved by MÁV Rail Tours and Kárpát Vasút companies respectfully. As there is no line-interlocking system installed, the second train can depart from Kál-Kápolna when the first one reports its arrival at Recsk.
The trains have to run with traction at both ends, as there are no paths for running round, and the level crossing barriers on the line have to be lowered and reopened by the crew as the trains pass them. After loading has been finished, the first train has to wait for the second one to report back from Kál-Kápolna, as there is no path for overtaking either.
In this image, the crew of the first train operated by MRT is waiting just for that at Recsk-Parádfürdő after finishing loading at Kanázsvár. Pushing the train is A25 016, the only surviving Ganz DV7-1 (big brother of DVM2) unit, while in the front a NOHAB was providing power.

This might not be the most spectacular photograph on Flickr, however, in these bizarre times,
a throwback to one of my very happy moments....
Look at that water; so powerful, invincible, pure, elegant.
In the situation we are in, and how we handle it -
Let's be like this current.

Jamestown (originally also called "James Towne" or "Jamestowne") is located on the James River in what is currently James City County in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The site is about 40 miles (62 km) inland from the Atlantic Ocean and the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay and about 45 miles (70 km) downstream and southeast of the current state capital city of Richmond. Both the river and the settlement were named for King James I of England, who was on the throne at the time, granted the private proprietorship to the Virginia Company of London's enterprise.
The location at Jamestown Island was selected primarily because it offered a favorable strategic defensive position against other European forces which might approach by water. However, the colonists soon discovered that the swampy and isolated site was plagued by mosquitoes and tidal river water unsuitable for drinking, and offered limited opportunities for hunting and little space for farming. The area was also inhabited by Native Americans (American Indians).
The 3 points of Colonial Virginia's Historic Triangle, Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown are linked by the National Park Service's scenic Colonial Parkway.

Despite inspired leadership of John Smith, chaplain Robert Hunt and others, starvation, hostile relations with the Indians, and lack of profitable exports all threatened the survival of the Colony in the early years as the settlers and the Virginia Company of London each struggled. However, colonist John Rolfe introduced a strain of tobacco which was successfully exported in 1612, and the financial outlook for the colony became more favorable. Two years later, Rolfe married the young Indian woman Pocahontas, daughter of Wahunsunacock, Chief of the Powhatan Confederacy, and a period of relative peace with the Natives followed. In 1616, the Rolfes made a public relations trip to England, where Pocahontas was received as visiting royalty. Changes by the Virginia Company which became effective in 1619 attracted additional investments, also sowing the first seeds of democracy in the process with a locally-elected body which became the House of Burgesses, the first such representative legislative body in the New World.
Throughout the 17th century, Jamestown was the capital of the Virginia Colony. Several times during emergencies, the seat of government for the colony was shifted temporarily to nearby Middle Plantation, a fortified location on the high ridge approximately equidistant from the James and York Rivers on the Virginia Peninsula. Shortly after the Colony was finally granted a long-desired charter and established the new College of William and Mary at Middle Plantation, the capital of the Colony was permanently relocated nearby. In 1699, the new capital town was renamed Williamsburg, in honor of the current British king, William III.
After the capital was relocated, Jamestown began a gradual loss of prominence and eventually reverted to a few large farms. It again became a significant point for control of the James River during the American Civil War (1861–1865), and then slid back into seeming oblivion. Even the Jamestown Exposition of 1907 was held elsewhere, at a more accessible location at Sewell's Point, on Hampton Roads near Norfolk.

Beginning in 1893, 22.5 acres of the Jamestown site were acquired by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. A crucial sea wall was built in 1900 to protect the shoreline near the site of James Fort from further erosion. In the 1930s, the Colonial National Historical Park was established to protect and administer Jamestown, which was designated a National Historic Site. The U.S. National Park Service acquired the remaining 1,500 acres (6.1 km²) of Jamestown Island through eminent domain in 1934.
For the 350th anniversary in 1957, Jamestown itself was the site of renewed interest and a huge celebration. The National Park Service provided new access with the completion of the Colonial Parkway which led to Williamsburg, home of the restored capital of Colonial Williamsburg, and then on to Yorktown, the other two portions of Colonial Virginia's Historic Triangle. Major projects such as the Jamestown Festival Park were developed by non-profit, state and federal agencies. Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain and Prince Philip attended. The 1957 event was a great success. Tourism became continuous with attractions regularly updated and enhanced.
The two major attractions at Jamestown are separate, but complementary to each other. The state-sponsored Jamestown Settlement near the entrance to Jamestown Island includes a recreated English Fort and Native American Village, extensive indoor and outdoor displays, and features the three popular replica ships. On Jamestown Island itself, the National Park Service operates Historic Jamestowne. Over a million artifacts have been recovered by the Jamestown Rediscovery project with ongoing archaeological work, including a number of exciting recent discoveries.
Early in the 21st century, in preparation for the Jamestown 2007 event commemorating America's 400th Anniversary, new accommodations, transportation facilities and attractions were planned. The celebration began in the Spring of 2006 with the sailing of a new replica Godspeed to six major East Coast U.S. cities, where several hundred thousand people viewed it. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip joined America's festivities on an official state visit to Jamestown in May 2007.
The current situation forced me to slow down my life in some ways. That's not bad, I think. Faster, higher, further is not good, neither for us nor for the environment.
While the world seems to be standing still the rain forest is cut down even more than before. This is so sad.

Goin' down, goin' down
Down where my breath is the only sound (only sound)
Goin' down
Goin' down, goin' down
Don't look for me now, I'm not around
All day long, I'm underground
I've been thinkin' about the future
I've been waitin' for the day
Let the current carry me far away
Let the current carry me away
Current flows, but I don't know where it goes
I don't care, I just get it there (get it there)
Took this job 'cause I needed one
That was seven years since I've seen the sun
All day long, I'm underground
I've been thinkin' about the future
I've been waitin' for the day
Let the current carry me far away
Let the current carry me away
And I've been thinkin' about the future
I hope some day I'll get away
But the current keeps bringin' me back around
Seems the only place for me is underground
So tomorrow, when the sun comes up, I'll be goin' down
Goin' down, goin' down
