(August 2002, Texas) After consulting with her mother and grandmother, the woman decided to stop by the local gas station instead of the local drug store. You see, an old wives tale holds that soaking one's hair and scalp in gasoline will kill the bugs. To some extent, it is true; however, lice are not the only creatures liable to suffer damage during this procedure.
After soaking her head in gasoline, the woman was in the mood for a cigarette. So she carefully washed her hands, covered her hair with a towel, and stepped outside to light up (no pun intended.) Shortly thereafter, the day care worker was no more, although it may be safe to say that she had rid herself of head lice.
I do not know which is more disturbing: that this woman was so lacking in common sense as to douse her head in gasoline and light a cigarette, or that she was entrusted with several children's lives on a daily basis.

Believe in the Cure Cycling Tour Brings Awareness of Hepatitis B to the East Coast
(An Inspirational Journey for an Inspirational Young Man)
DOYLESTOWN, PA (June 2008) – The power of one individual to make a difference cannot be measured in words, but in actions. John Ellis, a 17-year-old from Pensacola, Fla., was diagnosed with hepatitis B in 2006. Instead of being discouraged by this devastating medical diagnosis, John turned the news into an opportunity to raise awareness about hepatitis B. With a passion for cycling and a desire to help raise funds to find a cure for the disease, John contacted the Hepatitis B Foundation (www.hepb.org) with an idea to organize an East Coast cycling tour. Today, John’s idea has become a reality! The Believe in the Cure Cycling Tour, sponsored by the Hepatitis B Foundation, is a 1,100 mile journey beginning on June 2 at John’s high school in Pensacola and ending in Philadelphia on June 23 – John’s 18th birthday!
John Ellis is an extraordinary young man. He was a healthy teenager, when the results of a routine blood test revealed that he had hepatitis B. This news came just two weeks before his 16th birthday and John recalls emotions of, “being incredibly scared because I didn’t know what having hepatitis B would mean for me.” His fear was further fueled by his doctor who told him that he would eventually need a liver transplant. John’s world was turned upside down. He was frightened and also confused as to how he could have contracted this potentially fatal disease; he had received the hepatitis B vaccine in middle school.
John turned to the Hepatitis B Foundation to learn more about his disease. The Foundation is the only national nonprofit organization solely dedicated to finding a cure and improving the quality of life for those affected with hepatitis B worldwide. Hepatitis B is the most common serious liver infection in the world. It is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) that attacks liver cells and can lead to cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer. The virus is transmitted through infected blood. In the U.S., 1 out of 20 persons (or 12 million Americans) have been infected with HBV.
Armed with information about hepatitis B and with a conviction to improve his health, John gave up a junk food diet and began exercising. He purchased a $50 bike from a local bike store and started riding it everywhere – to school, to work and just for fun. “I knew I wanted to ride for a cause. People need to become more aware about hepatitis B and how it affects us,” said John.
John has shown us courage in the truest sense of the word. He is approaching his chronic hepatitis B diagnosis with a positive attitude and embarking on this cycling tour to prove to himself that he can overcome obstacles placed in his path. Knowing that there is no cure for hepatitis B does not dampen his spirits. “If I believe in my heart that things will work out for the best, then who’s to say I’m not cured,” said John.

The Cure are an English rock band formed in Crawley, West Sussex, in 1976. The band has experienced several line-up changes, with vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter Robert Smith being the only constant member. The Cure first began releasing music in the late 1970s with their debut album Three Imaginary Boys; this, along with several early singles, placed the band as part of the post-punk and new wave movements that had sprung up in the wake of the punk rock revolution in the United Kingdom. During the early 1980s, the band's increasingly dark and tormented music was a staple of the emerging gothic rock genre.
After the release of 1982's Pornography, the band's future was uncertain and Smith was keen to move past the gloomy reputation his band had acquired. With the single "Let's Go to Bed" released the same year, Smith began to place a pop sensibility into the band's music and their popularity increased as the decade wore on, with songs like "Just Like Heaven", "Lovesong" and "Friday I'm in Love". The band is estimated to have sold 27 million albums as of 2004 and have released thirteen studio albums, ten EPs and over thirty singles during their career.
t was announced on 10 November 2015 that the Cure would embark on a 26 date North American tour in 2016 which will include their first shows in some cities in nearly a decade, and it will include their first shows at cities they have never played at yet. According to the press release the tour will feature "37 years of Cure songs, mixing hits, rarities, favourites, and as yet unreleased tracks in a brand new stage production".[86] In 2016 they are scheduled to play across Europe, ending with three concerts at London's Wembley Arena, in a tour that also includes the first Australian dates in years. At a concert in New Orleans on 10 May 2016, the Cure played two new songs
Citrus cured salmon
1 cup coriander seeds
1/2 cup juniper berries
1/2 cup Telicherry black peppercorns
6 dry bay leaves
2 cups kosher salt
2 cups sugar
zest of 6 lemons
zest of 6 limes
zest of 6 oranges
2 pound salmon fillet, skin on
Finely grind coriander, juniper, peppercorns and bay leaves and mix with remaining ingredients. Transfer half of the spice mixture to a container about the size of your salmon fillet. Lay the salmon over the spice mixture and cover with remaining spice mixture. Be sure all of the salmon is surrounded by spice mixture. Cover container and refrigerate 48 hours. Rinse, pat dry, and thinly slice (leaving skin behind) for serving.
I've got 2 older brothers and an older sister. The gap to the closest brother is 9 years. When I was a kid my brother had an awesome stereo before anyone else and a record (as in vinyl) collection of The Cure, Bowie, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Hendrix, The Eagles. Actually, I don't know who bought The Eagles. Maybe that was dad. Anyway thats beside the point.
Charred in my memory is The Cure's 10:15 on a Saturday Night screaming out of those loungeroom speakers - and the loud helicopter bit from The Wall, Pink Floyd. Actually the other funny bit was The Radiators album, which I used to sing along to "Gimme Head". I would've been... 6? and singing that in the shower, full tilt, having no idea whatsoever what it meant. I thought my brothers were laughing just because it was cool that I knew all the words. Anyway, besides the point again.
When my siblings moved out, those records were passed to me.
When I moved to Sydney, those records were safely packed under the house as Mum and Dad's.
Several years after that I went home one weekend to hear about how they'd "done a big cleanup" and got rid of all the junk under the house.
I still feel sick in the stomach. And eyes go to ground at home when the topic is broached.
So I never saw The Cure until last night. They went in and out of focus for me over the years - but when they announced this tour and that they'd be playing that old stuff, in sequence, I had to go.
I've never seen so many goths with so much to be happy about.
It was a hot show. Sounded incredible. I wondered if Robert Smith kept the actual original guitar pedals he used on those early records - because I was amazed how faithful the sound was. He is much more of a guitar hero than i thought - playing seemingly parallel parts that I assumed would have been overdubbed and would be missing on the live version.
Rad show. 5 stars.
