One would think that romance among scimitar-horned oryx would be difficult. Fortunately, they do find ways to cuddle, despite the obstacles on their heads! The species is extinct in the wild, so we're always happy when new calves are born.

My Dad is the only one of us who can pick Noa up and hold her like this.

Western Toads spend most of their lives on land, but must return to water to mate and lay eggs. This takes place in the shallows, and in the small pond near our cabin there were hundreds of toads in a mating frenzy for about a week. The smaller males climb onto the larger females and fertilize the eggs as she deposits them. You can see the egg ribbons in the upper right of this frame - by the end of the week the shallows were chock full of these strings of eggs. We never saw them anywhere else so I have no idea why all of these toads decided on this body of water over others, but there were so many in this small pond that we dubbed it the "Cuddle Puddle"!

Minifee Chloe and Nanuri 2013. Face ups by me.

So pretty and sweet.

During the recent Easter break I was in Masai Mara with the family. The anticipated long rains have been delayed and the Mara was very enjoyable without having gotten stuck in the mud.

The cats were plentiful, but the herbivores are what completes the food cycle, without whom the cats would not have anything to feed on.

Zebra's are normally busy feeding all day with their heads down. Whilst on a break you may be lucky to see a couple with their heads resting on each others back.
