Equipment used:
d300
Trusty 17-55mm f/2.8
2 x SB-800s
1 full CTO gel
1 home-made grid spot (thanks Strobist!)
Here's how I made this: I made a sort of really crude gridspot from one inch slices of cardboard box taped together (I was out of glue!). I put this + full CTO gel on a flash at about 45 degrees of camera right, pointed slightly upwards toward the center-right of my face. This flash was about 1/1.7. About 20 degrees camera left was another SB-800, bare ands kittering across the side of my face, with the power around 1/100.
I bumped up the aperture to f/8 (going for more detail and easier to make sure I'd focus), and tried to ham it up a bit, so I did two things:
(1) Jump up and down until my face was kind of sweaty (warm night)
(2) Try to adopt a purposely adopt a 'cold' look, to contrast with the light
This picture is shamelessly inspired by this one:

Which I consider to be cool beyond words.
There is post processing here, but all it is is cranking up the clarity to max and sharpness to about 3/4ths in ALR.
