Acadia was designed in Canada for the Hydrographic Survey of Canada and built by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson at Newcastle-on-Tyne in England. Named after Acadia, the early colonial name for Atlantic Canada, she was launched in May 1913 and was commissioned that July upon her first voyage using the prefix CSS, which stands for "Canadian Survey Ship." She saw extensive use prior to 1917 surveying the waters along Canada's Atlantic coast, including tidal charting and depth soundings for various ports. Her first two seasons were spent in Hudson Bay, along with the first Canadian surveys of notorious Sable Island. In her first year she rescued the crew of a steamship crushed by ice in Hudson Bay, the first of many rescues the rugged steamship would make. Among her more enduring work was a survey of the Bay of Fundy which became her longest assignment prior to entering military service.

The body of South Shore Line #111 sits at East Troy RR's Mukwonago car barn, near the Elegant Farmer. This car was probably acquired for parts as it does not appear on the museum's 2015 roster.

A l'origine USS Merrimack frégate 3 mats à vapeur lancée en 1855 à Boston.
Coulée pour échapper aux sudiste, elle est renflouée par ceux-ci et transformée en cuirassé à vapeur. Elle affrontera le cuirassé unioniste "Monitor" sans résultat le 9 mars 1862 après avoir coulé et endommagé plusieurs navires nordistes.
Finalement sabordée le 11 mai 1862
