Sunn O))) at Storsalen, Chateau Neuf, Oslo. Attila Csihar on vocals. Shared concert with Maja Ratkje & Lasse Marhaug.
Attila Csihar, the baritone voice of Sunn 0))) and Norwegian black metal pioneers Mayhem, created his first ever intimate solo durational work. Inspired by the theatre, science and ancient mythology of alchemy, he performed a specially created text in the Enochian language within a scrying ritual. Central to alchemy, scryers often used bridges and towers as portals to access visions of the past or future. It was also considered as a way to communicate with God through Angels, which John Dee famously turned into the Enochian Dictionary in the 16th century.
In this radical new work Csihar connects together the North East landscape from Lindisfarne to the Tyne Bridge with past, present and future.
Biography
Attila Csihar is a Hungarian black metal vocalist, best known for his vocal work with Mayhem and Sunn O))). His music career began in 1985 in the Hungarian metal band Tormentor, which reached cult status in black metal circles with their first album, Anno Domini. He has recorded five full-length albums with the American doom/drone metal band Sunn O))), including their most recent release Monoliths & Dimensions, and performed live with the band on their worldwide tours. This live performance for voice makes use of the unique acoustics of the Civic Centre entrance dome. It represents the Equinox as the equal point between night and day, and takes us through multiple time cycles. The performance, by Susan Stenger and Attila Csihar, took place within the last 30-minute cycle of Susan Stenger’s sound installation The Structures of Everyday Life: Full Circle.
The Structures of Everyday Life: Full Circle unites Western harmony and Eastern philosophy to mark both the birth and death of John Cage. It responds to the unique acoustics of the Civic Centre entrance dome by slowly building and dismantling dense drones in evolving cycles. Across a six-hour day, time is unfolded on multiple scales, across clock time, lunar waxing/waning, and seasonal celestial cycles. Full Circle embodies the unity of constancy and change reflected in the I Ching.
Biography
Susan Stenger was born in Buffalo, New York. After intensive classical flute studies in Prague and New York, she joined Petr Kotik's Brooklyn-based SEM Ensemble and devoted herself to performing music of twentieth century composers, including John Cage, Christian Wolff and Phill Niblock. She soon began making her own work for flute and electronics, as well as touring with Rhys Chatham's all-electric-guitar band. In 1986 she joined Robert Poss in founding seminal guitar group Band of Susans, who went on to release nine critically acclaimed CDs.
After moving to London in 1996, Stenger formed performance group The Brood and all-bass-band Big Bottom, and began collaborating with acclaimed dancer/choreographer Michael Clark. In 2006 she created a 96-day sound installation as part of Soundtrack For An Exhibition, presented at Musée d'Art Contemporain de Lyon. Stenger has toured as bassist with John Cale and Nick Cave and has composed projects with writer/filmmaker Iain Sinclair since 2007 for Analog Festival, Dublin; and Sketch Gallery, London. She is currently working on a new composition for the Kronos Quartet.

Merzbow
Masami Akita (born 1956 in Japan) started his Merzbow project in 1979. Inspired by Kurt Schwitters, Vienna Actionism, Dadaism, psychedelia and prog-rock, Akita decided to create a new, sonic expression that broke with all musical norms. His aim was to combine Schwitter’s idea of refuse as artistic material with the most ecstatic highlights of rock music. The result was modern noise music, and Merzbow is currently easily the greatest and best known artist of this genre. Akita is also the most active, with over 300 releases to his name (including Merzbox – a collection of 50 cds), and he shows no sign of slowing the pace. In recent years, Akita, who is a vegan, has spoken out on behalf of animal rights and used his name as the leader of noise music to promote this cause.

Attila Csihar (born 1971 in Hungary) is already a legend of black metal music. As a vocalist, his unique style of singing combines metal music’s vocal techniques with contemporary music’s extended use of the voice. During the last half of the 1980s, he was the leader of the Hungarian band Tormentor, which is now recognised as the founder of this genre. When the Norwegian black metal scene emerged in the early 90s, Csihar was invited to sing on the now legendary Mayhem record De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. Subsequently, Csihar worked with the more experimental band Plasma Pool, before he again joined Mayhem in 2004, after Maniac, the band’s vocalist for 10 years, left. During the last few years, he has also been a vocalist in the drone cult metal band Sunn0))). Voidovvoices is Csihar’s new solo project, in which he concentrates exclusively on voice and samplers.

Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson was best known as a founder member of Throbbing Gristle and Coil, a designer at Hipgnosis, and a videomaker for Greenback Films. In summer 2010, AV Festival commissioned him to compose a work for the 2012 spring Equinox, to be staged at Durham Cathedral, where his father was University Vice-Chancellor from 1960–1979.
Christopherson died in his sleep at home in Thailand on 24 November 2010 before completing the work. This music, film and performance event was a celebratory remembrance of his life and work.
It included the premiere of three performance sketches with Christopherson‘s original collaborators for the commission: visual artist Alex Rose, sound recordist Chris Watson and vocalist Attila Csihar.
Special guests Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti premiere live remixes from Throbbing Gristle’s nascent, and final, studio album: a 'cover' of Nico’s Desertshore, preceded by a rare screening of Philippe Garrel’s The Inner Scar for which Desertshore was soundtrack and inspiration.
The evening comes to a poetic close with Derek Jarman’s The Angelic Conversation, with a soundtrack by Coil, Christopherson considered the film “truly, a timeless work of art”.

From the upper left:
1. "White Trash Rockers, 1955-69". Old hillbilly, sleazeball, explotiation records from early rock'n'roll. Some great stuff here!
Especially 'Rockin' Out the Blues' by the Musical Linn Twins. Shit's downright talking in tongues!
2. "Marion Brown". ESP Disk jazz stuff from 1965. Worth it for 'Capricorn Moon' alone.
3. Zappa, "The Man from Utopia". Love the Tanino Liberatore album art!
4. The Fall, "Slates". At their creepy, shambolic best with "An Older Lover" and "Leave the Capitol". "I laughed at the great God Pan" --- and what was so funny, Mr. E. Smith?
5. Tom Waits, "The Black Rider". 'Neath that, the Goodfellas soundtrack.
6. Eno, "Music for Airports". I took a nap listening to track four earlier.
7. "Crunk Hits". WHAT? YEAH!
8. "Best of Attila Csihar". OK, a left-fielder for me. He's this Hungarian black metal vocalist, his band Plasma Pool combined electronics with the dark atmosphere, they come off like a bunch of goofballs mostly, but with titles like "Korog: Worshipper of Current" and "Anaal Nathrakh: Atavism", I'm bemused.
