Look closely!

I bought this terracotta statue from James Spratt, a talented local sculptor I knew in the 1980's. He based it on the family legend of a friend of his, whose great grandfather fought in the US Civil War. It seems the man was a cavalry officer who went into one battle, charging into a line of infantry. After a period of ferocious fighting, he finally broke free and had a chance to pause and rest - at which time he discovered three severed hands still clinging to his horse's harness. A story that bizzarre has just got to be at least based in fact. And I can see how foot soldiers might try to stop a man on horseback in a crowded field of battle by grabbing his horse's tack - a bad idea when the rider has a three foot sabre. In any event, I love both the statue and the story.

This is our FIRST CSA shipment! We're so excited to learn how to cook some of these things. Thanks to Offbeat Home for letting me in on this awesome community. It feels completely like the right thing to do.

June 3, 2011 shipment. Fresh Picks Double Box from Irv and Shelly's Fresh Picks. This box included local rhubarb, yukina savoy cooking greens, bunched Egyptian walking onions, gourmet salad mix, Thyme, asparagus, stuffing mushrooms, tomatoes (out of region), and gypsy peppers (out of region).

We also ordered a dozen large eggs (free range certified organic from Whispering Spruce Farm, WI), beef stew chunks (local), pork shoulder roast (local, humanely raised with no added hormones or antibiotics from Twin Oak Meats, Fairbury, IL).

Our first "mini-everything" bag from the local CSA.

"For a brief time, when I was a freshman, Slidell had a skate shop. Sadly the name now escapes me, but during it's existence I was there multiple times a week. Most of the kids from the area high-schools that comprised our tiny suburban skater/punk scene went there, it was the meeting place; like our clubhouse. I was even on the shop team- whatever that meant. One day after school I had another falling out with my sister and left in my socks; when my dad returned from work he knew where to find me. I don't think I ever bought anything at the shop; I'm relatively sure the rest of the kids didn't either, or not much anyway- perhaps some t-shirts, but honestly I doubt it; we didn't really have any money and didn't think about the repercussions of where we spent it- we mostly bought our stuff mail order; even though we were at the shop multiple times a week, and it was our clubhouse, and even when we found ourselves with nowhere else to go, a few times a week, for the too-few weeks that the shop lasted."
