All these Super Moon shots are taking me back to this full moon in September of 2015. Rightfully so, Crystal Mill is one of Colorado’s most photographed sites and you’ve probably seen it in your feeds before. (Special thanks to the headlights of the approaching vehicle for perfectly light painting the powerhouse.)

For today’s Macro Monday challenge I started with pictures of the surface of a crystal teardrop prism from an old chandelier. I realized the better idea was to hold the lens directly against the prism and focus on the refracted patterns inside the crystal. I hope the moderators don’t think these are too far outside the theme…

Seemed like a good time to play with my crystal ball. I need to do this more and try to get more creative with it!

Crystal River, Florida morning dockside memories

Crystal - This is the crystal ice cave under the Vatnajökull ice cap. It's an incredible place that has been carved out by glacial melt water. Due to ongoing global warming, this particular cave has been retreating at around 200-300 meters each season... and around 3-4km in the last 15 years.

I have deliberately left the punter in at the entrance to show the sheer scale of this place. I hope you all enjoy!

Many thanks,

Will

Crystal Geyser is located on the east bank of the Green River approximately 7.2 km downstream from Green River, Utah. It is a rare example of a cold-water carbon dioxide driven geyser; geothermal activity does not play a role in the activity of the geyser. The ground water near the geyser has significant quantities of dissolved carbon dioxide, along with substantial underground gas accumulations in the surrounding area. Saturation of the aquifer with CO2 creates enough pressure to force groundwater through the geyser and out on to the surface. Before 2005, the Geyser eruptions were as much as 130 feet in the air but now they seldom reach more than two or three feet in height Locals believe that this is due to oil exploration near Green River changing the water table. The geyser in in its "bubbling" phase in this image.

The first written record of Crystal Geyser comes from the report of the Powell Geographic Expedition of 1869, July 13, 1869.

I was doing some Christmas shopping and came across this beautiful crystal owl. It is my sister in law's birthday next week and while we don't normally buy presents, I couldn't resist buy him as she collects owls.

There is a bit of a story here. I saw the owl on a shelf as I was waiting to be served. I purchased the owl but when I came home it wasn't in the bag. I rang up and after someone checking they said they couldn't find it behind the counter. They said that the best they could do was offer a refund. Peter and I drove back to the store and the staff behind the counter did another check and said it was not there. I was quite angry and told them that it was bought as a special present and that I wasn't really happy with just a refund. The lady behind the counter was just about to do the refund and I said once again that I was really disappointed and not happy. Just at that moment the store manager walked past and asked what the problem was. When I explained what had happened she said that she had found it and went to the cupboards behind the counter and came back with my little owl. I don't understand why the other staff members didn't find it, but I am so happy it had been found. I also can't understand why the store manager hadn't mentioned it to anyone as well - would have solved the problem straight away.

A series of images taken at 10x magnification of citric acid crystals that I grew on a few microscope slides. It’s an easy process!

Just mix citric acid powder with equal parts isopropyl alcohol and distilled water, put on a plate of glass when dissolved and wait a few hours. The process works with other things too, including Epsom salts and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C).

Put a polarizing filter on a flashlight, shine that through the slide and place another polarizing filter in opposition on top of the slide – you’ll then see the crazy colours that result from cross-polarizing these biaxially birefringement little gems!

Shot with a @lumixcan S1R – my favourite camera ever. This was attached to a Novoflex tube lens and a Mitutoyo 10x microscope objective. If you’ve got a macro lens capable of 5x magnification you can achieve very similar results with a bit of cropping, or on a less-than-full-frame sensor.

This was attached to a Novoflex CASTEL-MICRO automated focusing rail, which allowed focus to be found very easily and focus stacking because it’s impossible to get the slide perfectly parallel to the focal plane of the camera without a microscope stand.

Even a single microscope slide could yield dozens of compositions, and no two crystals ever form the same way.

If you’d like to learn more about this technique, I’ll be adding it to my upcoming book on macro photography: skycrystals.ca/product/pre-order-macro-photography-the-un...
