A hike down into Linville Gorge in the predawn blackness of Western North Carolina, and the forecast for a chilly 15 degrees F had those little voices picking away at the back of my mind and the aches and pains of lugging my pack from a previous shooting location earlier in the night chipping away at my bones. But the thunderous sound of the falls swollen from the heavy rains earlier in the week was the siren call that beckoned me onward. My reward was the blessed solitude from the less fanatical as the thoughts of everything else emptied from my mind in front of this amazing view. Warmed by my decent, the only reminder of the cold were from the puffs of condensation from my breath that seemed to mimic what was coming from the falls. Time slowed and the only distant thought was of the soon to be rising sun as I clicked on different lenses. Reminiscent of trying on final selections of nice clothing, each presented it's own special look. 24mm, 50mm, 70mm. Being the sucker that I am for shooting wide, I went with the 24mm here and cropped to a little wider the the 50mm offered.

Today cryobiology is a tangible branch of biology that studies the effects of living things in extreme below freezing temperatures.

There are many distinctions in the cryo-science practice and the freezing of non-living matter, but in cryobiology the main focus is in the study of preserving life in biological matter including proteins, cells, tissues, organs and organisms in their entirety.

In recent years, with support of emergency medicine, the basis that cryobiology may surpass organ transplantation and may have the ability to increase the length of a life may be slowly becoming a reality... (read more) - the frozen fountain of youth -

fun facts:

The word cryobiology is derived from the Greek words 'cryo' meaning 'cold', 'bios' meaning 'life' and 'logos' meaning 'study of' or 'science'.

The freezing temperatures in cryo-science may range from very cold, sub zero, hypothermic conditions to extreme temperatures of –300 °C.

As a result of the below freezing temperature measurement studies, scientists created a new temperature scale from the commonly known Fahrenheit and Celsius, which they call the Kelvin and Rankine scales: whereas –300 °C or –508 °F translates to –27 K (conversion_calculator)

Liver spots (also known as age spot, solar lentigo, "Lentigo senilis", "Old age spot," "Senile freckle") are blemishes on the skin associated with aging and exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. They range in color from light brown to red or black and are located in areas most often exposed to the sun, particularly the hands, face, shoulders, arms and forehead, and the scalp if bald.

The spots derive their name from the fact that they were once incorrectly believed to be caused by liver problems, but they are physiologically unrelated to the liver, save for a similar color. From the age of 40 onward the skin is less able to regenerate from sun exposure, and liver spots are very common in this age group, particularly in those who spend time in the sun.

In the vast majority of cases, liver spots pose no threat and require no treatment, though they occasionally have been known to obscure the detection of skin cancer. However, despite being a benign condition, liver spots are sometimes considered unsightly and some people choose to have them removed. This can be done by electrosurgery, laser treatment or cryotherapy.

I'm suffering severe sciatic nerve pain at the moment and quite frankly - feel depressed and fed up - My treatment has not worked this time, but there is hope - this can apparently take 6 -12 weeks to improve on its own and I have had this problen before. I'm going back on the painkillers, but not so much on Flickr until I'm better.

If not, I'm getting a wheelchair with a 500cc turbo motor on it and I'm going to terrorise all the poor pedestrians in our ....quiet town....know what I mean! Rest is not allowed - only physical activity, come what may.

PS - yes, I was on painkillers when I took this photo, so we're talking eight weeks already since it all started!!!!

No need to comment, dear friends - and don't wish me well - I am well - just in pain that's all, but life is pain and others are far worse off than this old grump :-)

Oh - I was thinking of trying Cryotherapy, so tonight I've started - 1'3rd bottle of Wodka with ice - I think it works ;-)

Have a luvverly jubberly weeeek friends..... OOOh e.....fallen over!!

Spinal manipulation, which chiropractors call "spinal adjustment" or "chiropractic adjustment", is the most common treatment used in chiropractic care. Spinal manipulation is a passive manual maneuver during which a three-joint complex is taken past the normal range of movement, but not so far as to dislocate or damage the joint. Its defining factor is a dynamic thrust, which is a sudden force that causes an audible release and attempts to increase a joint's range of motion. High-velocity, low-amplitude spinal manipulation (HVLA-SM) thrusts have physiological effects that signal neural discharge from paraspinal muscle tissues, depending on duration and amplitude of the thrust are factors of the degree in paraspinal muscle spindles activation. Clinical skill in employing HVLA-SM thrusts depends on the ability of the practitioner to handle the duration and magnitude of the load. More generally, spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) describes techniques where the hands are used to manipulate, massage, mobilize, adjust, stimulate, apply traction to, or otherwise influence the spine and related tissues.

There are several schools of chiropractic adjustive techniques, although most chiropractors mix techniques from several schools. The following adjustive procedures were received by more than 10% of patients of licensed U.S. chiropractors in a 2003 survey: Diversified technique (full-spine manipulation, employing various techniques), extremity adjusting, Activator technique (which uses a spring-loaded tool to deliver precise adjustments to the spine), Thompson Technique (which relies on a drop table and detailed procedural protocols), Gonstead (which emphasizes evaluating the spine along with specific adjustment that avoids rotational vectors), Cox/flexion-distraction (a gentle, low-force adjusting procedure which mixes chiropractic with osteopathic principles and utilizes specialized adjusting tables with movable parts), adjustive instrument, Sacro-Occipital Technique (which models the spine as a torsion bar), Nimmo Receptor-Tonus Technique, applied kinesiology(which emphasises "muscle testing" as a diagnostic tool), and cranial. Chiropractic biophysics technique uses inverse functions of rotations during spinal manipulation. Koren Specific Technique (KST) may use their hands, or they may use an electric device known as an "ArthroStim" for assessment and spinal manipulations. Insurers in the US and UK that cover other chiropractic techniques exclude KST from coverage because they consider it to be "experimental and investigational." Medicine-assisted manipulation, such as manipulation under anesthesia, involves sedation or local anesthetic and is done by a team that includes an anesthesiologist; a 2008 systematic review did not find enough evidence to make recommendations about its use for chronic low back pain.

Many other procedures mentioned in Chiropractic SEO guide for treating the spine, other joints and tissues, and general health issues. The following procedures were received by more than one-third of patients of licensed U.S. chiropractors in a 2003 survey: Diversified technique (full-spine manipulation; mentioned in previous paragraph),physical fitness/exercise promotion, corrective or therapeutic exercise, ergonomic/postural advice, self-care strategies, activities of daily living, changing risky/unhealthy behaviors, nutritional/dietary recommendations, relaxation/stress reduction recommendations, ice pack/cryotherapy, extremity adjusting (also mentioned in previous paragraph), trigger point therapy, and disease prevention/early screening advice.

A 2010 study describing Belgium chiropractors and their patients found chiropractors in Belgium mostly focus on neuromusculoskeletal complaints in adult patients, with emphasis on the spine. The diversified technique is the most often applied technique at 93%, followed by the Activator mechanical-assisted technique at 41%. A 2009 study assessing chiropractic students giving or receiving spinal manipulations while attending a U.S. chiropractic college found Diversified, Gonstead, and upper cervical manipulations are frequently used methods.

Effective prostate cancer treatment depends on several factors. Depending on how advanced the cancer is or how quickly it is spreading, your treatment options could range from simply monitoring the problem to undergoing aggressive radiation treatment.

Each treatment has its advantages and disadvantages, and what proves effective for one cancer patient may not work at all for someone else. As always, it's best for anybody who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer to find a treatment that works best for them, something that may be easier said than done.

Prostate Cancer Treatments

Of the prostate cancer treatments available, your doctor will recommend the treatment option that is best for you. The decision will depend on your overall health and how far advanced your cancer is. If the treatment recommended for you is not something you're comfortable with, for instance you may not be comfortable with external beam radiation therapy; you can give your doctor your opinion. It's important that you are at ease with the decision. Discuss it with your family as well, particularly the possible side effects and cure rate.

Oncologists specialize in certain fields. The one you are referred to will be a specialist in the treatment prescribed for you.

Watching and Waiting

The first strategy in most treatment plans is watching and waiting. The signs and symptoms that may indicate prostate cancer are also indications of other problems such as an infection in or close to your prostate. Watching and waiting is to determine which condition your symptoms are from.

During this period, blood samples will be tested for PSA levels and tissue samples may be sent for a biopsy.Elevated levels of the prostate specific antigen may point to a less serious medical problem. This is why a tissue sample may be taken; to verify or to rule out the presence of cancer. Remember that early treatment usually has a better possibility of cure.

Surgery

Prostate cancer can also be treated through the surgical removal of the prostate and the surrounding tissue. This is a very invasive procedure that can be performed in a number of different ways. Your doctor will be able to help you decide what method is best for you should you require this treatment. Adverse effects could consist of urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction.

Radiation

There are 3 different types of radiation therapies. External beam therapy is typically a stream of X-rays aimed at your pelvis from a device outside the body. The X-rays burn away cancer cells through repeated treatments over several weeks.

An alternative external beam therapy is Proton Beam Therapy. Instead of using X-rays, protons, which are charged particles or ions, are streamed at your pelvis, again from a device outside your body.

Brachytherapy is the introduction of several radioactive seeds directly into your prostate. They are implanted with a series of injections while you are under a general anesthetic.

All of the radiation treatments above work on the principle of burning cancer cells away with high energy particles. Radiation treatment can take place over time, and is subject to the same side effects as surgery.

Hormone Therapies

Another option for treating prostate cancer involves using therapy to stop the body's production of testosterone. Because prostate cancer cells need testosterone to increase, reducing off their supply of androgen hormone or testosterone can frequently be an effective therapy for prostate cancer. This type of treatment is often used for advanced cases of prostate cancer to shrink tumors and slow down their growth or in early stages of the disease as a preparation for radiation therapy.

Hormone therapy typically involves the use of drugs to either stop the patient's testicles from producing testosterone or prevent testosterone from reaching the cancerous cells. In extreme cases, the testicles can be surgically removed in a procedure called an orchiectomy. This lowers the patient's testosterone levels much more quickly than most medications.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a procedure where, during surgery, your prostate is frozen and then thawed to destroy cancer cells.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME

Fashion, health( www.thetaylorsauce.com/health-beauty-tips/ )and beauty have always been important to me, and since resigning from my full time job to start this blog I am now lucky enough to have more time to myself to try new things and implement positive changes in my life. For me, self development has never been a destination, I believe in trusting your instincts and enjoying your journey; I will share mine with you throughout my blog. It is hard to break patterns of behavior but so rewarding when you do, and see the results – I am still working on the six pack though!

The change of season brings beautiful foliage, many wardrobe additions, holiday travel plans and lots of fun events, however this can play havoc with your health and general well being. My skin starts to resemble a reptile, my jeans feel like they have shrunk two sizes and my calendar looks unmanageble, so I thought I would share some of my fall beauty tips to staying healthy and happy over the holiday period.

WHAT TO DO

I have recently been having regular cryotherapy sessions at Advanced Cryo NYC which greatly assists with my recovery from regular intense workouts – in recent years I have ramped up my training as I have more time and motivation, and I absolutely love the recovery benefits and relief that cryotherapy gives me in between workouts, and an added bonus is that it makes me sleep like a baby!

Make the time to get a massage! This pleasure should not only be reserved for vacations – I know I am better all round when massages are a regular part of my health and beauty routine.

Fall weather for me means regular facials… to maintain a healthy, hydrated and hopefully youthful glow I go to Go Green Organic Spa

As we all know, good inner health shows – for me especially in my hair, skin and nails. Since my lifestyle change to being self-employed in recent years, I have noticed a vast improvement in these. I believe in regular manis / pedis all year round as well as frequent hair masks either in the salon or at home do not skip these beauty practices!

One of the biggest changes or should I say additions to my lifestyle since moving to New York has been seeing a dermatologist on a regular basis. This was prompted by being diagnosed with basel cell carcinoma combined with the being intrigued by how amazing many female celebrities’ look at every age and what are some of the most common beauty rituals – thank you to everyone who has opened up about the importance of seeing a dermatologist habitually!

WHERE TO WORKOUT

For those who know me know that many of my New York mornings these days consist of ‘hardcore pilates’ aka SLT – there are many of these studios across the state for a reason – it works! Although these classes are challenging and sweaty, they are intimate and I love the intense full body workout whilst still being low impact on the body – a great way to warm up on those chilly fall mornings…

If you really, really want to sweat then you should check out Barry’s Bootcamp – this intense cardio workout is a fun Sunday sweat session with friends, and I am excited to try it in London later this month!

To relieve my sore body and busy mind I practise yoga regularly at Sky Ting – the studio space and teachers are equally beautiful, and every time I travel I cannot wait to come home to visit.

Fall weather means fall foliage and what better way to experince it than a ‘mini circuit’ workout, brisk walk, run or ice skating in the magical Central Park – no excuses for not working out!

WHAT TO BUY

With skin care being a huge beauty focus for me in the fall, I cannot live without Maya Chia’s wonder blam which is great for stubborn dry skin areas, made from ‘superfood’ chia seeds it will leave those areas feeling smooth and nourished; I also love Maya Chia’s illuminating face serum which results in looking glowing and radiant even after travelling long distances with minimal effort, this is a travel essential.

For the home, make sure you invest in some good hair, skin and nail vitamins like Biotin, and a humidifier like this one from Objecto to maintain your healthy glowing skin!

I have recently fallen in love with Nip & Fab – their Dragon’s Blood Hylaronic Shot is super hydrating, plumping and affordable – great for everyday under your moisturizer and really makes a difference, especially in cooler weather.

I often apply my Kiehl’s daily moisturizer combined with foundation or a CC cream using an Artis Brush – these brushes result in uniform application and superior blending of your products. I am taking the Digit Collection in the handy travel case on my trips over the holidays and this also makes a great holiday gift.

My skin care routine would never be complete without some serious eye love from La Mer – I actually use a lot of La Mer products that I was introduced to when I was a buyer at David Jones, Australia many years ago, and La Mer’s quality and richness still remains my go to.

Dr. Zhanna Tsukerman, MD is offering Internal Medicine services in her private office. Our facility has expanded to provide full urgent and chronic care diagnosis and treatments. We have diagnostic facility that enables us to provide same day blood tests and electrocardiogram diagnostics, so that our patients do not have to leave the facility to complete a physical examination or medical clearance.

Our practice philosophy is one of “patient first”. You will never wait long time, you will always be heard, and your beliefs and feelings will always be the most important consideration to any treatment plan. Dr. Tsukerman has always believed that attitude is everything when it comes to a patient’s ability to self-heal, and therefore will never attempt to force or coerce a patient into a treatment plan. She feels that it is her job to diagnose not only the problem, but the source of the disease or disorder. Rather than treat the symptoms of the disease, it is her integrated-humanist philosophy to treat the patient, first, and then together attack the source of the issue.

A woman receives counseling prior to a cervical cancer screening at the Urban Health Center in Inhambane. This health center provides a variety of reproductive health outpatient services, with a focus on the cervical and breast cancer prevention program. The Cervical and Breast Cancer National Prevention Program (CECAP) started in 2009. Services in this health center are provided under Reproductive Health Outpatient Services, which besides CECAP also provide Family Planning, Screening and Treatment of STDs and HIV, Management of Gender Based Violence and other services for women in reproductive health. This is a Health Center Type A, which, since March 2012, provides basic services for the screening and treatment of cervical cancer using Visualization with Acetic Acid (VIA) and Cryotherapy. When advanced lesions are identified, women are then referred to the Provincial Hospital of Inhambane located in the same city.
