Crossbones Cemetery, Redcross Way, Southwark.
A cemetery for prostitutes licensed (pimped) by the Bishops of Winchester Palace in Southwark. When they died, after years of paying their dues to the church from their work, they were buried in this unconsecrated ground by the bishops. Later it became a burial ground for paupers, still unconscrated. It is believed that there are 15,000 people, men women and children buried here.
Trying to put a new spin on the Skull and Crossbone theme.

A delightful skull & crossbones motif on the side of an old sarcophagus in a cemetery in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. These were the days, when the cold, hard reality of death covered the tombstones. Much better than the Victorian era, when they got all romantic about everything with angels and beautiful women and weeping willows on the tombs. Those are nice too, don't get me wrong, but these vintage skeleton graves are the best.

Detail above the cloiser.
Designed by two Dominican friars, Fra Sisto Fiorentino and Fra Ristoro da Campi. Further work on the basilica continued on commission from Giovanni di Paolo Rucellai who asked Leone Battista Alberti to complete the magnificent façade. The structure is a good example of humanist architecture, with proportion and classically-inspired detailing creating a balance with the pre-existing medieval part of the façade
I was walking my dog in the Hermann Cemetery and found this old tombstone with a skull and crossbones.
