Sandhills State Park, Texas.

Monahans Sandhills State Park. In these shifting seas of sand, rich in stone evidences of primitive men, today's visitors find flint points, sandstone metates and manos of peoples who were here as early as 10,000 years ago and late as the 1870s. Bones of great mammoths and gigantic bison prove that this desert was in post-glacial times a land of lakes and tall grasses.

Cabeza de Vaca in 1535 and Antonio de Espejo in 1583 encountered Jumanos, historic tribe which hunted here. In 1590 Castano de Sosa found a tribe he called Vaqueros because they lived by hunting cows (buffalo)--the tribe later called Apaches.

For more than 100 years at this stop on great Comanche War Trail extending into Mexico. Apache fought Comanche for pools of water and acorns of dwarf Shinnery oak. The California or Emigrant Trail through the Sand Hills started with the gold rush. Was first mapped in September 1849 by Capt. Randolph B. Marcy, U. S. topographical engineers, and in 1854 by Capt. John Pope, who explored a railroad route toward the Pacific Ocean.

After a mostly sunny, hot day, the sun set to the horizon of the sky. As temps began to fall, a friend and I observed this big snake crossing a highway in front of us. We quickly picked it up out of the asphalt road and moved it to a more remote gravel road before traffic likely would have killed it. The snake was defensive, hissing and striking vigorously. After photos it was released in thick desert scrub to continue it's journey.

You don't want to step on one of these. They are covered in venom-filled nematocysts used to paralyze and kill fish and other small creatures. For humans, a man-of-war sting is excruciatingly painful, but rarely deadly.

Stained glass on concrete. Around 3" long or diameter. Just played with leftover concrete and created some shapes that I then mosaiced.

Some interesting critters were seen as we passed by Summerfield, TX. I asked that the vehicle make a U-turn so that I could launch the drone and get a quick pic to document that I had in fact see this trio of motors shoving some grain cars.

This critter has a Conrail logo. It was on Thames St. & S. Broadway, Fells Point, Baltimore, MD in December 1980 and was basically an Aircraft Tug/Pusher adapted for railcars.

Our Daily Challenge ... critter.

A large "litter" of baby snails have been born and they seem to like these cordylines. Every day I pick a few more off. The sun was catching this little fellow so nicely I had to take his photo before disposing of him.
