field dreamer roams aimless, touched by summers whisper as breeze passes gently and red poppies sway. she retreats book in hand and thoughts in mind in the midst of English summer. Oh Poppy girl i wonder what your name is.
Not an easy task in last Saturdays conditions. Alas, the big Wibsey centre nailed his man.
Photo taken during last weekends Crigglestone All Blacks v Wibsey ARLFC pre season friendly game.
Two HNRC English Electric Class 20s TNT with this weeks RHTT (Rail Head Treatment Train). English Electric Class 20 Bo-Bo no.20 118 (D8118) "Saltburn-by-the-Sea" leads the 3Z14 12:13 Grimsby Town-Bridlington RHTT through Criggleston, near Wakefield, with no.20 132 (D8132) "Barrow Hill Depot" at the rear.
The weeks RHTT had been slated for DRS Class 37s, however these were withdrawn due to wheels flats and had to be replaced by Harry Needle Railway Company (HNRC) class 20s (20 311 & 20 314) only for these to in turn fail due to electrical problems.
20 118, D8118 when introduced in 1962, was built by RSH for EE. 20 132, D8132 when introduced in 1966, was built by EE.
Jinty No 47445 on the British Oak system at Crigglestone on a hazy 4th April 1969. The Wagons were propelled over a hump before running onto the shute in the background for unloading onto a waiting barge on the canal.
A pair of ex-BR class 14s ended up at NCBOE British Oak Disposal Point at Crigglestone, the former D9513 and D9531 arriving in 1968 via Arnott Young, Parkgate. Both ended up at NCB Ashington with many others of the type and have since been preserved. The pair are seen in 1969, still only 4/5 years old.

Jordan Crowther started his Rugby career at Crigglestone All Blacks and played alongside my two nephews, Owen and Henry Firth. Owen eventually moved on to play Rugby Union in Nottingham and Henry is playing for Salford City Roosters at league. Jordy was signed by Wakefield Trinity and played for many years without quite forging a regular first team place. Just as he was finally establishing himself a better offer came up and he signed for Warrington Wolves where he has become a regular.
Jordy is seen here with head bandage plaything for Warrington yesterday against his old club Wakefield Trinity. Trinity were on great form yesterday and ran out 40-10 victors.
Jordy has the last laugh though as his Warrington team will play at Wembley on 7th June in the Challenge Cup final against Hull KR.
Will this be a last chance to photograph these veterans on the mainline. Ok, I appreciate that this years RHTT may run a little while longer, but as we hear every year this will be their last year of service.
20303 with 20305 on the rear are seen heading south in appropriately glum weather at Crigglestone Junction yesterday afternoon. Just check the ISO I had to use.

In their retirement mum and dad tend to go out for breakfast twice a week to Blacker Hall and meet up with pals also called John and Margaret. The farm shop can be seen in the background here. This photograph was taken from the road bridge that looks down on the old station at Crigglestone (over my shoulder in the other direction) but in this view looks towards Ossett where the 226 foot tall church spire can just be made out on the horizon.
In this image that goes back to 12th February 2023, 1967 built English Electric 50008 Thunderer is seen on the rear of the Branch Line Society's 'Technical Cobra' rail tour, 1Z88 from Derby-Ponterfact Monkhill. 37403 was on pole position at the front of this special.
Something a little different for me. Today I went to Crigglestone to capture the RHTT passing through, hauled by TNT 'Choppers'. I believe that these ageing locos may soon have had they day, so I thought it was time to record they're passing on the mainline network.
English Electric Class 20 Bo-Bo no.20 303 (D8127) "Max Joule 1958-1999" and 20 305 (D8095) "Cresty Bridge" pass Crigglestone on their way to Barnsley and on to Sheffield with the 3S14 RHTT.
I grateful to Simon (captainkez) www.flickr.com/photos/captainkez/ for the 'heads up' on this train.

Climbing the 1 in 100 gradient from Horbury Jn to Woolley Edge, 20118 and 20132 pass Crigglestone with the South Yorkshire RHTT, working from Grimsby Town to Barnsley on an amended diagram.
An idle few minutes allowed me a chance to start to get to know my new Photoshop software package. In this instance I chose to colour pop the yellow of this DRS class 20 special as it was about to pass the site of the former Crigglestone station.
The Crigglestone tunnel is now only 250 yards long, and sadly bricked up at one end. Originally, the line ran from Hunslet Lane, Leeds to Savile Town Dewsbury via Crigglestone. All that remains is the enormous west portal. The eastern portal is now buried under landfill.
On March 27th 1992 Her Majesty the Queen visited Queen Elizabeth Grammar School Wakefield to attend the schools 400th anniversary celebrations. A good friend of mine, John Wraithwell, a signalmen based at Healey Mills, told me that the Royal Train would be parked at the old colliery sidings at Crigglestone before running into Wakefield Kirkgate.
Next to me on the road bridge was Walt Cavell, the Healey Mills driver who had actually brought the train into Crigglestone from Sheffield at 3.20 am that morning. For his services Walt had received a letter of thanks signed by HRH and a "Tenner" for a drink. Surprisingly Walt had been chosen for the duty purely on the basis of him being the man "next in line", dispelling the common belief that Royal Trains had specially selected crews.
This shot shows the train leaving Crigglestone at exactly 9.30am with 47805 "Windsor Castle" up front and 47825 at the rear.

Seen at Horbury Station Junction a Class 40 on a light engine movement overtakes a Class 08 with K64 trip from Healey Mills to Wakefield C&W shops. The line entering from the left is the line from Crigglestone Junction which was used to stabling the Royal Train on overnight halts during it's visits to Yorkshire.

R.C.T.S. (West Riding Branch) West Riding Railtour 6-9-64.
Original plan was to use a pair of Jinties and a Crab though operationally the units were much more suited to the number of reversals.
Page 87 of 'Dawn of the Diesels' by John Spencer Gilks has a different shot here. In many ways better as it shows not only the other end of the train but also the whole station and junction view. It's an amazing thing memory as I had this photo in mind as soon as I purchased the original slide. The only details I started with was 'West Riding Tour 1964.

Ex B.R. class 11 No. 12122 is in a bit of a state at British Oak coal disposal point, Crigglestone, on 20th July 1983.
Horbury Junction 24-6-88 45012 tripped light engine from Healey Mills to Crigglestone and picked up 10 loaded HAAs. She drew them out onto the mainline at Horbury Junction from where she backed then into Horbury Junction Yard. Unusually, she then left them in the yard and returned to Healey Mills light engine.
40029 stands at Carlisle after arriving with a Merrymaker from the Sheffield Division on 19th January 1980.
After boarding at Barnsley, the trip took the Crigglestone Junction to Horbury Station Junction section of line, usually freight only or used by summer Saturdays trains. Passing Mirfield, we caught up with a parcels train behind 40118 slowing for Heaton Lodge Junction. We took the line to Sowerby Bridge and then the Copy Pit route, which was under threat of closure at that time. After a stop in Preston for a crew change, we went north up the WCML, racing the traffic on the M6 before going under the motorway bridge at Tebay at full bore. What a sight this must have been going up Shap! The summit was passed at around 15-20mph before the descent to Carlisle. This turned out to be the highlight of the trip! With the MkI bogeys hunting furiously around the curves and objects sliding around the carriage, it was clear we were doing more than 90mph, Having passed a "90" sign and checking the time between the quarter mile posts it was certainly in excess of 100mph...roughly 102mph!!
We arrived safely in Carlisle and here 40029 is waiting to depart with the ECS.
Network Rail class 73 73951 is seen heading north passing the old Crigglestone station during its Derby to Wakefield return measurement service.
Prior to its acquisition by Network Rail this locomotive was operated by British Railways and numbered 73104. It was built by English Electric and first entered service in October 1965.
The annual trackside weed killing trains are once again upon us and once more the venerable class 20's have made an appearance. Every year we expect that this will be their curtain call. I wonder whether we will see them in 2018.
If anyone can let me know the identity of the lead 20 that would be great. Thanks to Keith Long, I now know the leading 20 to be 20302.
Both of these two stalwarts were built in 1961 so between them they have provided well over 100 years service on the mainline. Not only that but they are both older than me and whilst I am now retired they are still earning their keep.

This illustration shows the canal shute and a Hargreaves barge on the Calder and Hebble Navigation at the British Oak Screens site Crigglestone near Wakefield. The rail system at this time was operated principally by ex BR Jinty No 47445.Loaded coal wagons were run onto the shute and then the coal released onto the barge. 27th January 1969.
Now running in quite a short formation, 60056 enters Horbury Cutting with the empty bitumen tanks from Preston to Lindsey. At the rear of the train was Horbury Station Junction, where the line went to Crigglestone Jnc. When built, the train would be entering the 2 track Addingford Tunnel. The tunnel was opened out and increased to 4 tracks, a line that handled huge quantities of Lancashire bound coal.
