Down a muddy path balanced on top of my ladders using the benefit of the camera flip-out screen is what it took to capture this in Horbury Cutting, oh and a long stretch to miss the trees on the right.
66197 rounds the bend in Horbury Cutting close to the old junction with the Crigglestone Loop, I like to look at old 25” Ordnance Survey Maps of spots recently visited, interestingly, the 1919 map for here shows the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway as a two-track railway, but with the bridge as the portal to Horbury Tunnel.

From a while back and on a sunny Friday afternoon after a long week at work made the short 30 minute trip north to Wakefield. The reason 20118 and 20132 firstly passing the sad remnants of Healey Mills yard. This shot will not be unique as there were about ten other photographers on the bridge all equally spaced.
The second shot at a new location for me, Crigglestone halfway between Wakefield and Barnsley. Having returned to the M1 I realised I had managed to pass the 20s again before Meadowhall, hence the sunset shots posted earlier around Brightside.

Newbuild A1 pacific 60163 Tornado is seen in late light passing the site of Crigglestone station.
For those unaware this new build took place between 1994 and 2008. As the first UK mainline newly built steam engine she has become a catalyst for many other projects. She is also the first steam locomotive to reach 100mph on the UK rail network in over 50 years.
Hats off to the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust who built and maintain this wonderful locomotive.
Heritage locomotive 37403 is seen in charge of the Branch Line Society's 'Technical Cobra' rail tour, 1Z88 from Derby-Ponterfact Monkhill. As is often the case with the Branch Line Society this special would go on to cover many more miles of relatively unused track. 50008 Thunderer was t9o be found at the rear of this train.
37423 Spirit of the Lakes powers the Yorkshire railhead treatment train past Crigglestone. 37419 Carl Haviland 1954-2012 is on the rear. The working is 3S14 12.38 Stainforth & Hatfield - Bridlington (via Wakefield Kirkgate, Huddersfield, Wakefield Kirkgate, Barnsley, Sheffield, Barnsley, Wakefield Kirkgate and Selby); this would normally have started at Grimsby Town (at 11.16), but the set had had to return to York earlier in the day to fix a fault with the jetting equipment, so part of the morning's circuit was omitted. [Pole, 2/6 sections (~2.7m), stood part of the way down the bank]
20189 and 20227 power the Wakefield - Sheffield leg of 3S14 11.13 Grimsby Town - Malton (via Wakefield Kirkgate, Barnsley, Sheffield, Barnsley, Wakefield Kirkgate and York) railhead treatment train at Crigglestone.
20189 was owned by Michael Owen and 20227 by the Class 20 Locomotive Society; along with 20142, 20227, 20901 and 20906, these locos were on hire to DB Schenker for the York-based RHTTs as class 66s were not cleared to operate some of the lines covered by these circuits.

20118 + 20132 pass Crigglestone in fading ight with 3Z13 1213 Grimsby to Bridlington. So, last year was the end of class 20s on the York based RHTT... Same time next year anyone?? 25th November 2020.
This is the underside of a bridge carrying the M1 motorway over the river Calder near Wakefield in West Yorkshire. It was the reflected light that caught my eye.
As Eddie Waring would have said, "poor lad', "he's heading for an early bath". In this instance the Crigglestone All Blacks player was leaving the pitch injured as opposed to having been sent from the field by the referee.
Photo taken during a recent pre season friendly between Crigglestone All Blacks and Wibsey ARLFC .
Alas the auto focus facility on the camera focussed on some of the snowflakes just n front of the retiring player.
It is rare that steam is seen on the Barnsley line, so i don't suppose it should have been too much of a surprise to find a good two dozen phottors squeezed onto the overhead road bridge.
Tornado was making good progress on the return leg of the Darlington to Chester "Mad Hatter" excursion.
The building to the right of Tornado is the former Crigglestone station which was built by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1850 and closed to both passenger and freight in 1965.
As can be seen the light was poor so the ISO had to be cranked and I had to lighten the image a little.

Colas liveried GM EMD (Electro Motive Division) Class 66/8 nos.66 849 “Waylay Dilly” and 66 847 “Terry Baker” TnT the 3S14 11:38 Grimsby Town to York Thrall Europa HRTT are making good progress now, as they pass Crigglestone, some 55 minutes ahead of the original time table. As this is railway strike day it’s not surprising.
The clean bodies and shirts tell the tale that Saturdays game had only just kicked off. Wibsey play in the West Yorkshire second division whilst Crigglestone play in the fifth division. Maybe the conditions were a bit of a leveller as by the time the game was called off (five minutes early) the score stood at Wibsey 24 - Crigglestone 14. My expectations are that Crigg should do pretty well this year.

It is over 50 years since I lived and worked in Wakefield but I remember a few lunch breaks spent down at Crigglestone with ex BR Jinty No 47445 working at the NCB site which I believe was operated by Hargreaves. The loco received a coat of orange paint on its side tanks and bunker, I suppose to emphasise it was no longer in BR stock. Coal was taken either to a shute for loading on barges on the Calder and Hebble Navigation or to the exchange sidings with BR. The line curving to the left leads to the canal and the line straight ahead to the exchange sidings. 27th January 1969.
A pair of DRS class 20s, 20305 and 20309, pass the site of the now demolished Crigglestone West station on the Wakefield to Barnsley line with 7.27am Grimsby to Bridlington RHTT (3S14).
Unlikely to be their last visit given the leaves still on the trees.

Here is a photo that depicts what was an every day scene but one that was hardly ever photographed. For that reason I am more than happy to upload this even though it is blurred. I have also tried to rescue as much detail as I can and it is obvious if you look closely.
The reason such photos are rare is that when working down the pit you always had to be extremely cautious of anything that might create a spark and therefore an explosion. Methane gas was the concern. Back in the 1960's the best way of taking a photo in the dark was to use a camera flash. This was obviously not permitted so dad took a camera down the pit one day and took some very long exposures. This being one. He must have balanced the camera, pressed the trigger and then taken his place at the left hand side of the image. This no doubt added to the blur. The central figure was my Uncle Gav. not a real uncle but my dad's best mate, my godfather and at this time dad's fitters mate.
Whenever anything mechanical broke down the pit, the "fitter" and his mate were called to repair it. Dad was a fitter and effectively responsible for repairs when on duty. Much of the equipment was huge and had a degree of complexity so fitters were provided with assistance in the form of a fritters mate.
I am really chuffed that dad took this photo as it gives a small window into a world that has disappeared for good in the UK.
Photo taken down Crigglestone pit at some time around 1967. The colliery operated from 1889 through until 1968.
Dad, if you want to add anything please do so.
Here are some important notes from dad.
Couldn’t log in to your flickr to add comments re the pit photo. Here’s what I would have put.
The date of the photo is circa 1963. The location is as you say Crigglestone Colliery, Uncle Gavin and I are in a ‘sluice gate’ (an area where the coal cutting machine pictured is housed awaiting the next cutting operation) As you can see it is quite a confined space with little room for the necessary maintenance work to be done, but we managed all manner of repairs and maintenance is such conditions..
As for the photograph. Knowing the safety reasons for not using a flash (no unauthorised electrical apparatus being allowed) I made a metal clip that held the shutter in the open position, then when the camera was positioned on a suitable horizontal piece of timber I ‘painted’ the scene with light from my helmet lamp, unclipping the clip after a couple of minutes exposure. In the picture I am in this was done by an electrician pal Mick Goodwin. We, two fitters and an electrician swopped roles behind and in front of the camera, trying different time settings; two, three and I believe four minutes. I can’t remember which result is which. Suffice to say I didn’t ask for permission to take the photo but wasn’t risking an explosion whilst doing so.
Incidentally Gavin, like myself was a fully qualified mechanic, shortly after this photo took we charge of the first fully mechanised coal face at Crigglestone Colliery.
Hope this helps. Dad

Class 20's, 20205 and green liveried 20007 climb Crigglestone bank near Wakefield with 3S14 the Grimsby to Bridlington RHTT.
20311 (front) and 20314 (rear) chop past Crigglestone with 3S14 11:17 Grimsby Town to Bridlington RHTT. 2/10/2019. This different angle was forced on me due to the crowds that had gathered to see the rare event of Harry Needle's Choppers on a RHTT, which was happening that year only until DRS 20s were ready to power the trains.
20302 leads 20303 "Max Joule 1958 - 1999" past Crigglestone with 3S14 11:15 Grimsby to Bridlington RHTT. 8/11/2017. This was my go-to spot to phot RHTTs locally, but as I thought this might be the last chance to get Choppers there, I thought I'd pay yet another visit. Not that there are that many options in this area anyway.
When your struggling for loco's you can always call on 58 year old 20118!
With the 2020 RHTT season drawing to a close, 20118 + 20132 are seen passing Crigglestone on 25/11/20 with 3Z14 - 12.13 - Grimsby to Bridlington, via Barnsley.
Taken using pole.
This afternoon my nephew played his first game of the season which due to covid was one of very few that he has played in the last two years. He is seen here (wearing his scrum cap) with a couple of team mates about to tackle the Wibsey ARLFC right winger Jack Savage.
Unfortunately, even though the tackle was fair Jack broke and dislocated his ankle. I must admit it made me feel uncomfortable looking at the state of the poor lad as he lay on the pitch with his foot pointing in entirely the wrong direction. Todays game was a friendly and only had five minutes to run so the referee quite rightly ended the game early. As it turned out the injured player couldn't be moved until the ambulance turned up. Everyone around, both on and off the pitch heard the sound of the break and to be fair Jack did exceptionally well given his injuries. His worst concern was that the ambulance crew advised that they would have two cut off Jacks boot which was virtually brand new.
