"Our Shipmate in the Spotlight for this edition is LCDR Elias Gonzalez. After graduating from Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry in 2013, LCDR Gonzalez completed a credentialing tour in Pensacola, FL at Naval Branch Health Clinic Naval Air Technical
Training Center, where he received his first Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
From 2014 to 2017 LCDR Gonzalez served an operational tour in Iwakuni, Japan with 11th Dental Company Detachment, where he directly contributed to the clinic achieving 98% operational dental readiness. During Exercise Dragon Fire in Camp Fuji, he led a team in providing dental support to over 100 marines and successfully established a fully functional field dental treatment facility, increasing the unit's operational dental readiness by 12%. LCDR Gonzalez received his second Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal upon completion of his operational tour.
From 2017 to 2021, LCDR Gonzalez was assigned to Naval Branch Health Clinic Naval Air Station Pensacola, where he served as Dental Division Officer. His efforts led to a 15% reduction in network referrals, a 50% improvement in access to care, and an 8% increase in operational dental readiness. He deployed with the USNS Comfort for operation Enduring Promise and provided humanitarian dental care to over 3,200 patients in Ecuador, Peru, Honduras, and Colombia; while onboard, he received the Shellback certificate and the Order of the Ditch certificate. LCDR Gonzalez was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for his achievements while assigned to NBHC NASP. In July 2021, LCDR Gonzalez separated from active duty and joined a private practice in Pensacola, FL. Upon separating, LCDR Gonzalez transitioned into the U.S. Navy Reserve and is currently assigned to Navy Reserve Bancroft Hall Med. LCDR Gonzalez serves as Dental Department Head during his drill weekends at Navy Reserve Center Pensacola.
Fun Facts
Hometown: I was born in Rota, SPAIN and lived there until I moved to Pensacola, FL at ten years old.
Dental School: Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, TX.
Favorite thing about being a Navy Dental Corps Officer: The Navy is part of my family's DNA. My dad and two uncles served full careers in the Navy; now my two older brothers and myself are all Naval officers, and the three of us get to work together at the same clinic during our drill weekends in Pensacola, FL (photo below). I enjoy the camaraderie and the unique opportunities the Navy has given
me. Some of these opportunities: living overseas and experiencing new cultures; providing dental care to the Blue Angels (photo below); working alongside specialists and collaborating with them to expand my scope of practice; and last but not least, riding a helicopter to work (I keep this last one in my back pocket in case I need to one-up my civilian friends...).
Hobbies: Soccer, traveling, and spending time with family.
Something that most people don't know about you: I participated in a talent show back in 2018 while on deployment aboard the USNS Comfort. The talent show had four separate rounds across six weeks,
and somehow, I ended up making it to the finale and won a Nintendo Switch. The talent? Beatboxing."Published in Weekly Dental Update August 11, 2023.
Joe attended the 1972 Democratic National Convention, along with his friend and colleague from Tougaloo College, John Dittmer, as an alternate delegate from Mississippi. After finally making to the convention floor as a credentialed delegate just before sunrise on July 12, he witnessed the introduction of the first ever gay rights plank to be debated by a major political party. Joe voted for it, even as the resolution went down to overwhelming defeat.

These were shot with my pocket camera, the Canon SD950-IS, hand-held. NO credentialed media photographers were allowed to take their real cameras into the concert. I apologize for the quality, but I still feel they are worth seeing.

Yet another leftover shot from the 2009 Honda Indy Toronto. Without realizing it, this would be exactly the kind of photograph I would be asked to take when shooting the event credentialed in 2010 and 2011.
The punchline is that my efforts from those years were awful compared with this.
