I spotted this sculpture on Laisvės Alėja in Kaunas, but there was no plaque in sight. Neither Mr. Google nor G.P.T. Chat could crack the mystery of its creator. Honestly, it looks like something straight out of John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982) - a true classic!

This image shows a well-camouflaged chameleon blending effortlessly into the sandy, stony terrain of the Namib Desert. A true survivor of the arid environment, this little reptile is a master of adaptation — both in color and behavior. Spotted in Namibia, this sighting reflects the extraordinary biodiversity hidden in one of Earth’s harshest yet most beautiful landscapes.
A sunbathing lizard, likely the Canary Island lizard (Gallotia galloti), pauses on a gravel path in Tenerife. Its vibrant yellow spots and detailed skin textures highlight the island’s rich reptilian biodiversity, perfectly blending into the volcanic and rocky landscape of the Canaries.
You understand your situation, don't you?

This photo captures the sidewinder adder, a desert-adapted snake native to the Namib. Perfectly camouflaged in the golden sands, this venomous serpent is known for its unique sideways movement, allowing it to move swiftly across hot surfaces. A true specialist in survival, the sidewinder embodies the raw elegance and danger of Namibia’s arid landscapes.

The phoenix is an immortal bird that cyclically regenerates or is otherwise born again. While it is part of Greek mythology, it has analogs in many cultures, such as Egyptian and Persian. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by rising from the ashes of its predecessor.

In this classic Universal horror film, a group of scientists encounter an amphibious humanoid creature in the waters of the Amazon. In their attempt to capture the creature, members of the expedition are killed or injured, and Kay is abducted and taken to the creature’s lair. The creature, also known as the gill-man, was played by Ben Chapman on land and by Ricou Browning underwater. Although the movie was filmed in three dimensions (3D), many audiences saw it flat, in two dimensions (2D). Typically, the film was shown in 3D in large downtown theaters and flat in smaller neighborhood theaters. [Source: Wikipedia]

And to think the movie is in black and white. The colors in the photo are terrific.

Inktober day 3 bat
Was listening to an interview with Journalist Ed Yong. He was on one of my favorite podcasts called "Creature Feature" where host Katie Goldin discusses all things animals. Yong wrote a book about animal perception. It's impossible to imagine or visualize how animals that see light in ultrviolet or infrared view the world. Human brains evolved under a regime where we lived sensing a narrow band of electromagnetic radiation (about 400-800 nm). We can also smell, hear and feel, but there was no pressure to develop the ultrasensitive hearing and smell like dogs or low-light vision of cats and rodents. We are very sight-dependent creatures and we naively assume that all creatures "see" as we we do or are at a disadvantage, but this a wrong. We sleep in the dark and so didn't need to see in IR or UV, or need to sense electric or magnetic fields as fish or birds do. As humans we are considerably physically weaker than say an ape, an antelope or a tiger, and far more vulnerable to the elements than a penguin or arctic hare. We certainly can't live in water. Having said that we have the biggest advantage - a powerful complex brain. With it we have the ultimate advantage of abstract thought and forethought - and all the good (and no shortage of bad!) that comes with it. We can see in the dark, fly faster and farther than any bird, swim underwater, stay warm or cool as needed, cure disease, etc....etc...like any animal. However we probably will never know how a bat understands the world around it. we can look at a sonar screen (still using are eyes) but our brain doesn't create a time-evolving 3-D space worldview that the bat experiences as it zeroes in on an insect in the dark.

This 1953 black-and-white monster film from Warner Bros. is based on Ray Bradbury's short story "The Fog Horn" and features stop-motion animation by Ray Harryhausen. The storyline concerns a fictional dinosaur, the Rhedosaurus, which is released from its frozen, hibernating state by an atomic bomb test in the Arctic Circle. The beast begins to wreak a path of destruction as it travels southward, eventually arriving at its ancient spawning grounds, which includes New York City. [Source: Wikipedia]
