A sylph is a mythical creature as light as air and as graceful as water.

Lovely new pointe shoes for Rosie, in a few weeks they'll look like hell. They don't last that long being made of satin and layers of paper stiffened with glue, about 12 hours worth of dancing is all. This pair may make it through the summer. There is a very thin pad that wraps around and cushions the toes, much thinner than you would guess. The muscles in the feet are conditioned and strengthened for years before you get to this stage.

That feeling of warm, heavy terry cloth fresh from the dryer.......feels so good on those aches and pains of being 11.

An abstract of an abstract, this free-form metal chair is seen from a 90 degree angle. The seat of a chair created from metal plates cut to shape and assembled by stacking them. Milwaukee Art Museum. It's also its own monochrome.

i just had to color this one. vectors!

At least in NY, black-backed woodpecker nests always used to contain multiple nestlings, but a few years ago this started to change, and now all nests contain only one fledgeling.

I believe that some sort of local branch of the federal government was available to study this (it could serve as a warning sign for the whole ecosystem and as such for the local economy), but if my memory serves me, either personnel was laid off or funding was cut.

I think dogs are the most amazing creatures. They give unconditional love. For me they are the role model for being alive.

I love photography. I went through this online program recently and noticed a lot of photographers seem to be having success with it.

I have just joined this program,

Life on Skid Row, downtown Los Angeles.

low tide reveals many gifts...this one has microscopic green algae that live inside the tentacles, which give this animal its green colorations.its lived over 30 years in captivity.

Anthopleura xanthogrammica can grow to 12 inches across.

this one was photographed in Sonoma county California { pacific ocean }in a tide pool at low tide

I've had this photo completed for over a month, but didn't post it because I wasn't happy with the way I processed it, and since I don't save my layers (that will change), I couldn't backtrack to a "happier place." But I was looking at the photo again this morning, and, no matter the treatment, the creature was still glorious and the moment was still amazing...so off to Flickr we went!

On a different note...

It's that time of year again, so I've just started my "the ones I like list" for 2007 on my blog. If you'd like to see which of my photos make my year-end favorites list, you can do so here.

Toi is a Red-shanked Douc Langur

She will be 19 yrs. old in June, and I believe that she is the only one of her species living in a zoo. I think she had a mate, but he is no longer listed on the zoo's webpage, so he may have passed on.

In the wild you would find them in the rain forests of Vietnam and Laos. They are critically endangered.

I was glad to get a picture of her. They are very shy creatures. The keepers actually cover over 1/2 of her viewing area, so if she wants to retreat from prying eyes she can.

The title refers to the Portuguese man o' war, the only species in the genus Physalia that is categorised as a colonial organism (Siphonophorae). It is indeed very similar to the glass objects (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Portuguese_Man-O-War_(Physalia_physalis).jpg). The accompanying text on the artwork states: ‘Between aesthetics, form and colour, the installation “Man of War” encourages us to reflect on our current collective status and what it still means to be an individual today, in an era in which due to data collecting, man is getting more and more transparent. In order to create a more active vision of the future in the face of universal crises, actions of sustainable collectivity must be developed: embracing the concept of diversity more fully and reflecting on its potential - for example, how multiple beings can inhabit one body and act as one. ‘Man-of-War’ is exactly that, a jellyfish-like creature made up of multiple beings united in one body.’

"Gläsern" ist der Titel einer Ausstellung verschiedener Künstler im Schloss Biesdorf vom 10. März bis 13. April 2025. Es geht um Glas in verschiedenster Hinsicht, Glas als Mittel, Licht farblich abzuwandeln, um gläserne Gegenstände aller Art als Unterart der Bildhauerei, um die Darstellung von Glas in Gemälden oder Videos.

‘Made of Glass’ is the title of an exhibition by various artists at Biesdorf Manor from 10 March to 13 April 2025, which focuses on glass in a variety of ways, glass as a means of changing the colour of light, glass objects of all kinds as a subspecies of sculpture, and the depiction of glass in paintings or videos.

I am not so good with creatures that crawl through my backyard..

But because I love taking pictures, I put this fear aside and just shoot!

This frog had amazing eyes and I took this shot like I do with the dogs...from a low angle...

Well, that's brave don't you think so?

Enjoy your sunday everyone!

Spotted this 'thing' on the beach in Marazion, near Penzance and although I realised it was a jellyfish, it was quite unlike any I had seen before.

Back home, where I live on the North Sea coast, I am familiar with jellyfish. Somewhat unwelcome visitors whenever the usually chilly waters become warmth enough to enjoy. You can be down having an enjoyable paddle when suddenly someone shrieks out loudly... "JELLYFISH!" It's almost akin to screaming out "SHARK!"

You can guarantee, that after the confirmation there are jellyfish about, paddling takes on a much more concentrated effort as you keep a keen eye out for these creatures.

Now, I don't know how dangerous or otherwise they actually are as I've never been stung. What I do know though is that I have no desire to want to find out.

Until this summer, the only jellyfish I've ever seen have been rather small – the largest being the size of a frying pan.

Then, there was this monster of a jellyfish, which I later learned was a 'Barrel Jellyfish' – the largest such jellyfish to float into UK waters. I don't know how often they are around, but this was the first encounter for me and I guess for quite a few others too. Sightings were making the headlines locally and after I returned home, I discovered they were featuring in the news nationally. 'JELLYFISH AS BIG AS A HUMAN' was one such headline (with a photograph taken to illustrate the point!).

I suspect that being 'as big as a human' might have been a big of a slight exaggeration, but these beasts are quite a size and I certainly wouldn't want to accidentally bump into one!
