Hello all!

It's been a hectic time at work, but I couldn't resist diving into the Christmas Ornament Design Challenge. 🎁 This project pushed me to explore materials and workflows I don't use often, and boy, was it a blast!

I opted for a handmade Christmas gnome ornament using cotton balls and felt sheets. Here's a quick rundown of my creative process:

Geometry Crafting with Plasticity: Swiftly drafted the overall geometry using Plasticity, making use of lofts for the hat and basic sphere shapes. Fast and efficient!

Blender Cleanup and Cablerator Magic: Imported the geometry into Blender to refine the mesh and crafted the lanyard using the Cablerator add-on – a real time-saver.

Keyshot Material Magic: Used the felt material from the library as a base and customized the color map in Photoshop for the nose and hat. Experimented with fuzz material for the head and top ball, but the real magic came with a scattering medium and Cloud VDB for the cloudy cotton ball look.

Snowflake Accents: Designed snowflakes as labels for the hats, adding a displacement map with a 9px blur for sharp edges.

Background Magic: Incorporated a cozy Christmas living room backdrop, adjusted exposure and color temperature for contrast, and threw it into the render cycle.

Finishing Touches in Photoshop: Rendered the alpha separately, reintroduced the background, and dove into Photoshop magic. Added vignette, color grading, contrast adjustments, and texture boosting for that perfect festive touch.

Running into obstacles is part of the journey, and one challenge was nailing the Fuzz material to pure white. Got pretty close, but some Photoshop finesse helped achieve the desired look.

Hope you all enjoyed the Christmas Ornament Challenge as much as I did! 🎅✨ Share your thoughts and experiences below – let's spread the holiday creative vibes! 🌈🔔

Here's "phase 2" of my collaboration with Cat Gilbert from NYC. Cat began these pieces with loosely drawn flower forms, and I added the Splotch Forms, which would later become "Splotch Monsters".

I can't wait to add rivets to my creations, now that I've tested them

... I let me go, trying not to worry about the result, to see what can come out.

... mi lascio andare, cercando di non preoccuparmi del risultato, per vedere che cosa ne può venir fuori.

This man was visiting the grave of someone; I didn't want to trouble him. But the gravesite is next to a large pond and seemed quite peaceful.
