Nylsvley Nature Reserve
Nylsvley Nature Reserve is part of the Nyl Floodplain. This unique area is a RAMSAR site, a Wetland of International Importance and has been identified by BirdLife South Africa as an Important Bird Area (IBA). The Nyl floodplain is South Afica's largest ephemeral floodplain and is surrounded by savannah woodland and grassland that together provide varied habitats for its renowned Biodiversity. Flamenco, in its strictest sense, is an art form based on the various folkloric music traditions of southern Spain, developed within the gitano subculture of the region of Andalusia, but also having a historical presence in Extremadura and Murcia. In a wider sense, it is a portmanteau term used to refer to a variety of both contemporary and traditional musical styles typical of southern Spain. Flamenco is closely associated to the gitanos of the Romani ethnicity who have contributed significantly to its origination and professionalization. However, its style is uniquely Andalusian and flamenco artists have historically included Spaniards of both gitano and non-gitano heritage.
The oldest record of flamenco music dates to 1774 in the book Las Cartas Marruecas by José Cadalso. The development of flamenco over the past two centuries is well documented: "the theatre movement of sainetes (one-act plays) and tonadillas, popular song books and song sheets, customs, studies of dances, and toques, perfection, newspapers, graphic documents in paintings and engravings. ... in continuous evolution together with rhythm, the poetic stanzas, and the ambiance.”
On 16 November 2010, UNESCO declared flamenco one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Kale and brown rice (vegan).
RECIPE

▶ INGREDIENTS
1 large bunch kale
1 cup brown rice
1 cup vegetable stock
1 strip kombu
1/4 cup cooked red beans (canned, OK!)
1 TBSP Balsamic vinegar
1 tsp vegetable oil
hot sauce
Kosher salt
black pepper
▶ RICE
1) Rinse 1 cup brown rice. Drain.
2) Heat 1 tsp oil at medium in soup pot. Add rice when hot. Stir constantly for a minute or until fragrant.
3) Add 1 cup vegetable stock, 1 1/2 cups water. Add 1 strip kombu. Bring to a boil. Cover, remove from heat. Let rest for 5 minutes.
4) Return to low heat, covered. Cook for 45 minutes or until all water/stock is absorbed. Discard kombu (or save for vegetable stock). Fluff.
▶ KALE
1) Separate kale from stems. (Save stems to make vegetable stock.)
2) Chop leaves coarsely. Rinse and drain.
3) Place chopped kale (minus the stems) and 1 cup vegetable stock in soup pot. Bring to boil, reduce heat to simmer. Cook for 5-10 minutes, depending upon desired tenderness and color. (Can be done while rice is cooking to save time.)
4) Strain stock from kale. (Save the stock for cooking!)
▶ PUTTING IT TOGETHER
1) Toss steamed, drained kale with 1/4 cup cooked red beans.
2) Mix in 1 - 2 TBSP Balsamic vinegar, and, to taste: hot sauce, Kosher salt (not needed if veggie stock is already salted) fresh cracked black pepper.
