we create not destroy!

Tiny funky little Daintree Village was originally a settlement created in the 1870's by timber-cutters and is now an unspoilt oasis in the midst of some of the loveliest and most varied scenery in the far north of Queensland. Today low-impact tourism and sustainable cattle- and tropical fruit-farming in the beautiful valleys beyond the Village form the lifeblood of this laid-back little township with all it's charm of yesteryear.

Daintree Village was the base for timber-cutters who came to log the red cedar which once flourished in the area. Today the timber industry is long-gone but there is an interesting timber gallery, featuring beautiful work by a local craftsman but who is no longer there.

The Village hosts a number of restaurants, locally-created souvenirs and picnic areas complete with free electric barbeque and picnic table.

The mighty Daintree River flows past the Village and is home to many estuarine crocodiles which are frequently spotted from the safety of one of a number of wildlife-watching cruise-boats which leave from the Village jetty. Birds and butterflies abound - the Daintree Village region is a world-renowned birdwatcher's paradise and there are several specialist guides.

Accommodation choices in the Village and it's surrounding valleys range from a famous spa resort, traditional B&Bs, retreats, farm-stays to budget cabins.

Beyond the Village are scenic drives which take the visitor along winding valley trails which follow the courses of the upper reaches of the Daintree and into the valleys of Stewart Creek, Douglas Creek and Upper Daintree through a delightful mix of rolling green cattle country and areas of lush tropical rainforest.

The cattle are tropical breeds now bred for their beef whereas in earlier days there was a thriving dairy industry. The butter factory in Daintree finally closed down in 1962 when it was no longer profitable to produce butter there. Descendants of the original settlers still live here, some operating thriving beef-cattle properties.

The Daintree River was only discovered by Europeans in 1873 when Scottish geologist and explorer George Elphinstone Dalrymple named the river and the first settlement, Daintree Village, after Queensland's Agent-General in London, Richard Daintree. Before the road to Mossman was completed in 1933 Daintree Village was an inland port with the only access being by river.

The Village gave it's name to the famous World Heritage-listed Daintree National Park which stretches in sections between Mossman Gorge in the south to the Bloomfield River in the north.

This was my submission, "Create..." to the 1st Annual Chain-link Fence Art Exhibition and Competition. Had a lot of fun with this, inspired by chain-link fencing of which I’ve never worked with before, tricky stuff ;) My arms got a work out.

MATERIALS: a 4 ft. x 4ft. scrap piece of chain-link fencing, a found barbeque grill (web), crystals, glass beads, found metal nuts/bolts/washers, metal wire and scrap telephone wire. I wanted people to discover the message in the spider’s web, “create” that would tie into the leading ant’s message of peace, happiness, laughter, love, opportunity, dreams, something(!). It’s good fun if we choose to create positive things for ourselves and the world :)

If you are curious about the process and the other versions/redo’s that went into this piece, please visit my blog to see more!

One last photo from me, taken with my iPhone 6 at a local arboretum with gardening plots available for individuals. Earlier this month, I was thrilled to see this colorful garden with its soil, fertilizer, watering can, and rake. It seems all set up for our CreatING month.

Nell watches closely as Tomas O Maonaigh, an animator, film-maker and educator from Nerve Center shows the kids how to move the figures slightly, photo them with the digital video camera and bring the images into the computer for animation. He was brilliant at describing and getting the kids involved and doing it. Their faces were amazing as they watched what they had created themselves on his monitor nearby.

Preparing for Kathakali in Kerala, India.

I did not take any photographs during the performance - expecting to get a chance at the end. Sadly this was not not the case, the dancers disappeared quickly off the stage after the performance - no doubt to quickly move their heavy headresses.

The dancing was simply awesome and much better seen by eye rather than through a view finder.

It is nice to be back in UK and I will try to catch up with friends over the next week.

Lots of India shots to come....

"I recently returned to the United States after spending 6 weeks in Cusco, Peru. I was volunteering through UBELONG, an organization that creates relations with local nonprofits and connects them with volunteers. The project I was working on had a preschool and workshops for their parents. The area faced lots of social problems like domestic violence, alcoholism and low education rates, so the program was designed to keep children safe while teaching their parents healthy practices. I worked on their marketing by translating documents, managing their Facebook, collecting information on grants, and create videos in English and Spanish.

This experience was incredibly unique and I loved every minute (although, admittedly, the initial language barrier and cultural differences challenged my work.) I have been afforded many opportunities to intern and work in the nonprofit/public sectors. Through Georgia Tech, I have also had a thorough education on global development and conditions in foreign countries. Working every day with a local nonprofit where public funding and private resources are lacking or few, I gained a practical view of the every day challenges to development.

I lived in the heart of Cusco and fell in love with the city. The entire month of June is a huge celebration of the history and anniversary of the city, complete with daily dances around the main plaza and a day-long re-enactment at the end of the month. This city sure has a lot of love for its culture and roots, and I loved how invested everyone was in the celebrations. Peru is also an immensely beautiful country - from the Andean mountains to the beach to the Amazon, the landscape is diverse and breathtaking.

My trip to Cusco was my second abroad experience at Georgia Tech. Both have inspired me to delve deeper into international affairs to understand the history, culture, struggle, and triumphs of other nations. As I enter my last semester as an undergrad, I am immensely grateful for the experiences both in Atlanta and abroad that have made me passionate about my major and the future of global development."
