Hopefully this fits the brief - I have always been fascinated by the concept of a parallel universe with ours, so tried to create one with this - after several attempts - I think this might be the one.

Not many days left before Halloween so I need to post these spooky places while I can. And I still haven't touched the trick-or-treat bags of candy. That has never happened before!
Enjoy the walk in the woods but look out for the creepy crawlies.

Challenge #32 - Urban Nature - The Blind Pig Speakeasy
Hadedas are a feature of the region where i live, they can be seen everywhere-out in the Bush,in the gardens in the town, even on lawns of municipal buildings and in empty lots, always foraging. They appear to be large and cumbersome birds-but i have seen fast dogs try to catch them-and in 11 years of living in this region,i have never seen it accomplished once, thank goodness:-) They have a very distinctive raspy call, which propably gave rise to their name.

The 1956 Ford Thunderbird’s standard Continental kit presented many complications. The external spare, bigger bumper, and the bracing necessary to support them added nearly 300 lb (136 kg) to the rear end, making the T-Bird slightly tail heavy. It also sharply increased the polar moment of inertia, leading to tail-wagging in sharp turns.

Long exposure photography can create dynamic, and sometimes, surreal images full of motion. Whether there is a sense of tranquility, apprehension with regard to the unexpected, or an element of surprise, night images can also evoke a true sense of emotion.
Photographers who specialize in night photography are indeed a special breed. This should not be so surprising when one realizes how much in-depth understanding of light is necessary to capture that perfect photograph. Additionally, there are some rather basic tips any newbie night photographer should know. This, and more, will be covered in this edition of “After Hours Photography,” with a few night photography exercises tossed in to allow you to practice that which is covered. After all, practice - and I do mean a lot of it - will enable you to create magical night imagery!
First thing first, and that is - Know Your Camera! Whether shooting landscapes, or urban settings, trundle through the darkness not only looking for the perfect scene, but experimenting along the way. A thorough understanding of your camera, and what all of the buttons do, is essential for night photography. The last thing you will want, with little light with which to work, is to fumble with your camera and its controls. Not knowing can only make for stressful, difficult photography.
** Take a moment, and have a look at your camera controls. Pay close attention to the Mode Dial. This is where you will set how you will photograph.

The Erewash Canal at Sandiacre—where industrial heritage meets tranquil waters. Barges here have quite the story to tell.
🚢 Historical Role of Barges at Sandiacre
- Coal Transport: Originally, barges were vital for moving coal from Derbyshire’s pits to the River Trent for onward trade to Nottingham and Leicester.
- Industrial Goods: They also carried pottery, textiles, iron, and even bombshells during WWII from Stanton Ironworks.
- Commercial Decline: With the rise of railways in the 19th century, barge traffic dwindled. By 1952, the last commercial narrowboat operation ended.
🏡 Sandiacre’s Canal Scene Today
- Sandiacre Lock Cottages: These restored lock keeper’s cottages and stables are a charming nod to the canal’s working past.
- Padmore Moorings: A popular spot for pleasure craft and narrowboats, offering moorings and access to local amenities.
- Preservation Efforts: The Erewash Canal Preservation & Development Association (ECP&DA) was formed in 1968 to save the canal from closure. Their work led to its upgrade to ‘cruiseway’ status in the 1980s.
🌿 Leisure and Wildlife
- Boating: While commercial barges are long gone, leisure boating thrives. The canal is quieter than others, making it ideal for peaceful cruising.
- Fishing & Nature: Anglers enjoy catching roach, bream, chub, and perch. The surrounding area is rich in wildlife, with kingfishers, herons, and even water voles spotted nearby.
📏 Barge Dimensions
- Max Length: 80 ft 4 in
- Max Width: 13 ft 5 in
- Draught: 4 ft
- Headroom: 7 ft 4 in
These specs allow for broad-beam barges, though most modern traffic is narrowboats.

Wombo does a really beautiful job creating Peonies and Roses. These hybrids look more like Peonies, but I was pleased anyway.
