We ended our family vacation by driving from Crescent City up to Crater Lake. After many, many (many!) bathroom stops for the kids, we arrived at Crater Lake in time for sunset. Jamie was nice enough to let me snowshoe off and shoot while she stayed by the lodge and played with the kids.

It was a beautiful sunset, and a wonderful place. I'm sure that I'll have to make the trip back again many more times.

Meteor Crater near Winslow, Arizona was created when a meteorite crashed into the earth 50,000 years ago traveling at 26,000 miles per hour. The crater is nearly one mile across and more than 550 feet deep. For a long while it was thought that this crater was created by a volcano. However, early in the last century Daniel Barringer proved that the crater was the result of a meteor impact. The crater is also called the Barringer Crater and is privately owned by the Barringer family. The crater is billed as the best preserved impact crater on earth.

Sunrise overlooking crater bluff in the Warrumbungle NP .It was an early rise for the 6 klms and 1000 vertical meters but I could have left a little earlier as there was a band of cloud just above the horizon that blocked the best light after this first 5 minutes , but I like this one , I have had this one as my desktop for a few days now and I want to keep looking at it

"Copernicus Crater"

April 2, 2020

Copernicus crater (93 km width, 3.8 km depth) is one of the most prominent features on the Moon, easily seen with binoculars, even during the full moon phase, sitting in its webwork of rays.

Here it is seen at high magnification. Its rays are discernable, especially in the lower right. Notice the myriad secondary craters surrounding it, most gouged by rocks blasted up by the original impact explosion, each digging a new crater of its own when it fell back to the Moon. The raised outer rampart walls are prominent, as are the terraced inner walls and central peak. Rubble (massive boulders) is strewn about the crater floor, especially in the southern half.

The amazing Little Crater Lake in the Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon! Before our trip to the USA I did a lot of googling to find places on the route to visit and I came across this gem. Must admit the road to it was a tad hazardous and full of giant holes - would have been ok in an SUV but we just had a regular 4 door sedan. It was worth the effort because I've never seen a place quite like it - apparently the water is a constant 1 degree centigrade!

I used my Lee polariser to reduce some reflection on the water and show the colours better.

Not extinct, just dormant on a roughly 10,000 year cycle.

P.S. One last reminder that I will be giving a free, on-line lecture tomorrow evening via Zoom on these Holgaramas. The presentation will even include a sped up video showing the assembly of this image (one of the faster, simpler Holgaramas I have done of late).

Made it up to Crater Lake last night to catch a pretty nice Aurora Storm. After sitting in the dark for hours taking photos with no color over and over. I was rewarded with a storm of light around 2:00am and snapped this image to take home. It was pretty amazing how the storm ended as fast as it appeared. Thanks to my bud Christina for helping me decipher the Aurora forecast code lol. And to my girl Jessy for the text support while sitting in the dark all night :)

Crater Lakes are beautiful but, unfortunately for photographers, are positioned such that the autumn sun stays right above the mountains for most of the day. The light started to get good just as the sun started to fall behind the ridge.

The old lodge in the late afternoon along the rim of the volcano

The volcano (1639-m-high) contains three striking summit crater lakes of varying colors. Tiwu Ata Bupu (Lake of Old People) is usually blue and is the westernmost of the three lakes. The other two lakes, Tiwu Ko'o Fai Nuwa Muri (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched or Enchanted Lake) are separated by a shared crater wall and are typically green or red respectively. The lake colors vary on a periodic basis. Subaqueous fumaroles are the probable cause of active upwelling that occurs at the two eastern lakes.

Kelimutu is also of interest to geologists because the three lakes have different colors yet are at the crest of the same volcano. According to Kelimutu National Park officials, the colour changes as a result of chemical reactions resulting from the minerals contained in the lake perhaps triggered by volcano gas activity. Kawah Putih lake in West Java, south of Bandung, is another crater lake in Indonesia with some similarities to the lakes at Kelimutu.

The lake's maximum depth has been measured at 594 m which fluctuates slightly as the weather changes. On the basis of maximum depth, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States, the second-deepest in North America (after Great Slave Lake in Canada), and the tenth-deepest lake in the world (Lake Baikal is the deepest).

Crater Lake - Like No Place Else on Earth

Crater Lake has inspired people for hundreds of years. No place else on earth combines a deep, pure lake, so blue in color; sheer surrounding cliffs, almost two thousand feet high; two picturesque islands; and a violent volcanic past. It is a place of immeasurable beauty, and an outstanding outdoor laboratory and classroom.

Hawaii Volcano National Park, Island of Hawaii, Hawaii. Halemaʻumaʻu Crater is a pit crater located within the much larger summit caldera of Kīlauea in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The roughly circular crater floor is 770 meters (2,530 ft) x 900 m (2,950 ft) and is 83 m (270 ft) below the floor of Kīlauea caldera. Halemaʻumaʻu is home to Pele, goddess of fire and volcanoes, according to the traditions of Hawaiian mythology. (Wikipedia) Scanned from an Ektachrome slide.

The deepest lake in United States of America. I think the cleanest too.

Yup, it really is THAT blue! And the views are amazing.

Crater Lake (near Bend, Oregon) - famous for its deep blue color and water clarity. The lake partly fills a nearly 2,148-foot (655 m)-deep caldera that was formed around 7,700 (± 150) years ago by the collapse of the volcano Mount Mazama. There are no rivers flowing into or out of the lake; the evaporation is compensated for by rain and snowfall at a rate such that the total amount of water is replaced every 250 years. With a depth of 1,949 feet (594 m), the lake is the deepest in the United States. In the world, it ranks tenth for maximum depth, and third for mean (average) depth.

The main crater from the 2021 volcanic eruption in Geldingadalir. The eruption started on 19 March and lasted for about six months, making it the longest eruption in the 21st Century in Iceland, while not the biggest. By the end the lava flow covered almost 5 square kilometres, about the size of NY's Central Park and London's Hyde Park combined. The eruption started in a small enclosed valley, which filled up with lava, until it started pouring outside its rim. The thickness of the lava at the site of the crater is about 70 metres.

Took this almost 1 year ago, just processed it tonight..

A view of Crater Lake from Applegate Peak (79th highest in Oregon). Applegate is an off-trail hike from Garfield Peak (on the left).

Mount Thielsen is the pointy peak in the distance.

In addition to Garfield you can see several other summits around the lake from here including The Watchman and Hillman Peak on the opposite shore left and Mount Mazama and Mount Scott on the right. The island on the left is Wizard Island and the little rock island on the right is called Phantom Ship.

Volcanic cones inside Haleakala Crater gave me the feeling that I was on some other planet. This wasn't something that I expected to see on the tropical island of Maui. But, I'm really glad that I did get to experience this otherworldly landscape.

Mount Bromo is an active volcano crater located in East Java, Indonesia. The name Bromo comes from the Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. Mount Bromo is one of three monolithic peaks situated in the Tengger Massif caldera in the Bromo-Tergger-Semeru National Park. At 2,392 meters tall, Mt Bromo is not among the tallest of Indonesia's mountains but its stunning beauty lies in its incredible setting. From a vantage point on Mount Penanjakan (2,770 meters above sea level), 2.5 hours from Malang. visitors from around the world come to see the sunrise over Mt Bromo.

Ubehebe, Death Valley, California

Ubehebe Crater is the largest of several dry maars, craters created when ground water comes in contact with magma, instantaneously turning to steam and exploding. The resulting phreatic explosion rips a crater in the ground, scattering bedrock, cinders, and fine debris about the area. In a wet environment, the resulting maar will fill with water, leaving a circular lake. In Death Valley any maar will remain dry, perhaps collecting a bit of a salt deposit at its bottom.

If you leave the parking lot at Ubehebe and following the hiking trails up the rim (not down into the crater) you will find the fascinating remains of other, smaller maars. Here in the foreground is a section of Little Hebe Crater overlapping an earlier maar dominating the background.

Ubehebe Crater is not as photogenic or well known as some of the other iconic locations in Death Valley, such as the Mesquite Sand Dunes and Badwater Basin, but I thought it was one of the most interesting and made a run out to photograph it during the last day of a recent trip to Death Valley. Will be posting other images of the trip over the next week or so.

Ubehebe Crater is a large volcanic crater 600 feet deep and half a mile across. To the Timbisha Shoshone Indians, the crater has been known as "Tem-pin-tta- Wo’sah", meaning Coyote’s Basket.

This crater is a Maar volcano, created by a steam and gas explosion when hot magma rising up from the depths reached ground water. The intense heat flashed the water into steam which expanded until the pressure was released as a tremendous explosion. The western cluster of Maar volcanoes in the area was the first to form, then the southern cluster, followed by Ubehebe—the largest of them all—about 2000 years ago.

Haleakala Crater is a large erosional valley at the summit of Haleakala volcano, Maui.

There are some great walks traversing the crater, the Sliding Sands Trail, visible on the top right, drops from the peak down into the crater. The two peaks in the distance are two shield volcanoes, Mauna Kea 4,207 m (13,802 ft) and Mauna Loa 4,169 m (13,679 ft ) above sea level, on the neighbouring island of Hawaii. I have recently migrated different photo libraries into Lightroom and having a play with its panorama feature. The photo is stitched from four images in portrait orientation.

Sweet light after sunset/moonrise...

This historic hotel was built in 1915 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. We stayed here on our recent trip to Oregon's Crater Lake National Park. The views of Crater Lake from the hotel are spectacular, and the food at the restaurant is delicious. The rooms are small with no TV or phone, and the wifi reception was described by a person at the front desk as "good-luck". The location is beyond compare for being able to get out early and catch the sunrise.

Imaged on the 20th March this is a closer view of Tycho Crater in the rugged southern lunar highlands.

It often gives the impression of being a polar crater when viewed from our perspective. However, it is well clear of the moon's libration zone and is only slightly foreshortened.

Some 53 miles in diameter the crater has a high albedo when the sun is overhead and the crater is surrounded by a prominent ray system. The crater is sharply defined and its inner wall is slumped and terraced sloping down to a rough but almost flat floor with small, knobby domes. The central peaks rise 1,600 meters (5200 feet) above the floor.

The area around Tycho is heavily cratered with craters of various sizes - many overlap older craters.

This was a particularly chilly and blustery evening on the crater rim. It was a good thing that my pinhole doesn't feel the cold, but my fingers sure did. But hands can always be thawed out later, the photos and memories last a lot longer than the chill.
