We were treated to a constantly changing landscape of swirling fog and intermittent sunshine as the storm blew across the lake. I've always wanted to see Crater Lake with snow, so I especially enjoyed this brief visit.
Happy Thursday! Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments, faves and awards -- I appreciate them all.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest caldera. The property has global importance for biodiversity conservation due to the presence of globally threatened species, the density of wildlife inhabiting the area, and the annual migration of wildebeest, zebra, gazelles and other animals into the northern plains.
This 5.5-miler descends into the Haleakala Crater circles the cinder cone, and showcases stunning colorful volcanic landscapes.

Crater Lake is famous for its deep blue color and water clarity. The lake partly fills a nearly 2,148-foot (655 m)-deep caldera that was formed around 7,700 (± 150) years ago by the collapse of the volcano Mount Mazama. There are no rivers flowing into or out of the lake; the evaporation is compensated for by rain and snowfall. With a depth of 1,949 feet (594 m), the lake is the deepest in the United States. In the world, it ranks ninth for maximum depth, and third for average depth. It is a central (but not the only) attraction of the eponymous national park. [Partially rephrased from Wikipidia.]
Meteor Crater, or Barringer Crater, is a meteorite impact crater about 60 km east of Flagstaff and 29 km west of Winslow in the desert of northern Arizona, United States. The site had several earlier names, and fragments of the meteorite are officially called the Canyon Diablo Meteorite, after the adjacent Cañon Diablo. Because the United States Board on Geographic Names recognizes names of natural features derived from the nearest post office, the feature acquired the name of "Meteor Crater" from the nearby post office named Meteor.
A view of Koko Crater, Hawaii from the top of Diamond Head Volcano State Monument across the Maunalua Bay. It's part of Koko Head Park. Diamond Head is also known as Mount Leahi. The trail is only .7 miles but it's a 560 feet up. The trail is decent with about 260 steps and various grades that can get slick if wet. The view of Koko Head, Waikiki beach and downtown are worth the climb. - #KokoHead #Hawaii #view #ViewFromDiamondHead #volcano #DiamondHeadStateMonument #MountLeahi #KokoCrater #MaunaluaBay #landscape #paysages #Landschaft #景色
This crater, 650 meters in diameter, has at its center a freshwater lagoon about 5 to 7 meters deep. On its slopes about 70 half-buried moai can be found, which shows that the demand for the production of these sculptures was so great at one point that even the tuff from inside the volcano was used as material.
Crater Lake is North America's deepest lake. It's covered with snow most of the year with an average snowfall of 505 feet. Most of the roads were closed when we were there.
It was pretty amazing there in the 37 degrees and 15 mile per hour winds of the night and seeing the sky over Crater Lake at night.
Tomorrow we start our trek back across the USA heading east.
Cruising along the basalt cliffs above Crater Lake between Trinidad and Quincy, Washington, is an eastbound BNSF Z train on the afternoon of September 21, 2016. The train is climbing a grade out of the Columbia River Valley and has just finished working through Trinidad Loop.

This is a 6 shot panorama taken in mid December during the new moon. Each exposure is set at f2.8, 20 seconds, ISO 4000. It was pitch dark at the lake that night. I arrived about midnight and it was -4 degrees. I drove through about 6" of new snow to get there. This is a shot I had visualized from this spot the previous Summer.
Great way to try and escape the horrible heat/humidity we've been having. It was in the low forties when we visited CL back in June.
as much as I love the gorgeous blue of the water in Crater Lake, I always love the colors on the rim surrounding the lake too. This just gives a glimpse through the trees for you.

A detailed section of the rim of Crater Lake near Wizard Island. There's a little smoke in the air from the local wildfires but way better than the previous evening when the water and island were not at all visible from this same spot.
Kerið is a crater sea mostly known for its deep blue water and the contrast with the red crater walls. It's on the well-trodden Golden Circle and as such a popular tourist attraction.
With all the natural wonders in Iceland which can be seen for free, it was disappointing to see such a minor attraction charging for entry while everything can be taken in in a single view. At least the water can provide for a nice bokeh background for closeup shots like this.
If anybody knows what this plant is, please post it in the comments. Thanks!

Looking S from the edge of Lava Butte's crater.
"Lava Butte is a cinder cone in central Oregon, United States, just west of U.S. Route 97 between the towns of Bend, and Sunriver in Deschutes County. It is part of a system of small cinder cones on the northwest flank of Newberry Volcano, a massive shield volcano which rises to the southeast. The cinder cone is capped by a crater which extends about 60 feet (20 m) deep beneath its south rim, and 160 feet (50 m) deep from the 5,020-foot (1,530 m) summit on its north side. Lava Butte is part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument.
