On November 1, 2017, a band of courageous and thoughtful citizens stepped up to let the Allegheny County Board of Health know that "better than it used to be is no longer good enough!" and that we citizens will no longer tolerate the absurdly frequent violations (recently over 6,700 during 3.5 years) by U.S. Steel of our clean air regulations. Thanks to PennFuture for anchoring the effort with their #ToxicNeighbor campaign. We need more people to join this early crew if we seek any reasonable chance of improving our air. The Courageous Women Group is made up of women who support orphans and children from vulnerable backgrounds, such as abusive homes and those from poor families. They have established a children’s home in Chieko Village, Mwiki, Kasarani where one of the grandmothers takes care of these children.

One of the orphans, Ms. Abigail Achieng Ouma, has benefitted from the support of the children’s home and she would like to give back to society by assisting the Courageous Women Group in various ways, including looking for potential supporters. She is currently a first year student at the Machokos University.

The home is currently supporting 13 children (8 girls and 5 boys) who are at various stages of schooling with the majority in primary and secondary school. The Courageous Women Group is kindly appealing for support to install gutters and a water tank to harvest rain water. The harvested water will make it possible for the women and children to establish a kitchen garden and also to become self-reliant for their domestic water needs.

I woke up extra, extra early this morning. It was 10:30 a.m. Normally, I only see 10:30 on the clock once a day. The ferryboat company here along the Jersey Shore, SeaStreak, LLC received a new ferryboat this last week. It is the largest high-speed passenger catamaran in operation in the United States.

The nice people at SeaStreak conducted an “open ship” or is it “open boat?” at noon today so the public could view this remarkable piece of technology. They even provided free doughnuts and cocktails!!! The boat was built starting in 2019 at Midship Marine in Harvey, Louisiana.

The owners decided to name the new boat, “Courageous” as a tribute to first responders and individuals who worked in the medical field and continued to take other SeaStreak boats into Manhattan during the pandemic. A local media outlet stated that the boat is valued at ~$18M. It has two bars — one inside on the first deck, and another “summer” bar behind the wheelhouse on the third deck.

The outside portion of the boat has red, white, and blue LED lighting. I suspect it will look spectacular when it’s coming back from West Point next summer at night after the home football games. The boat hosts 720 passengers. Many of the seats have tables so families can play games on a long trip. There are also several cocktail tables near the inside bar area where the cool people can enjoy an adult beverage.

My favorite part of the “open boat” event was that we were able to go into the wheelhouse and see all of the technology used in a modern boat of this size. Especially the captain’s chair where he sits when he tells his first officer and navigator to engage the warp drive!

HMS Courageous a nuclear powered submairne on the step. By flooding down the after ballast tanks and putting in an s turn at high speed the submarine then ends up surfing on its own bow wave. This increases its speed and the submarine can travel at very high speed for considerable periods. It is not the most comfortable experience living at that angle for days though!

Cocky. Confident. Courageous. Clever.

Courageous and strong, the American Staffordshire Terrier (Am Staff)’s athletic build and intelligence make him ideally suited to many dog sports such as obedience, agility, tracking and conformation. He is often identified by his stocky body and strong, powerful head. The breed’s short coat can be any color, and either solid colored, parti-colored or patched.

A Look Back

Until the early 19th century, the Bulldog used for bullbaiting in England was more active and longer-legged than the breed as we know it today. It is thought that the cross of this older Bulldog and a game terrier breed created the Staffordshire Terrier. Originally called the Bull-and-Terrier Dog, Half and Half or Pit Dog, it became known as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier in England. When accepted for AKC registration in 1936, the name changed to American Staffordshire Terrier to reflect the heavier American type and to distinguish them as separate breeds.

Right Breed for You?

The Am Staff is a people-oriented dog that thrives when he is made part of the family and given a job to do. Although friendly, this breed is loyal to his family and will protect them from any threat. His short coat is low-maintenance, but regular exercise and training is necessary.
