The ballet La Nuit sur le Mont Chauve (Night on the Bare Mountain) premiered in April, 1924 at the Théâtre de Monte-Carlo. The choreography was by Bronislava Nijinska and the set and costume designs were by Natalia Goncharova.
Night on the Bare Mountain (now better known as Night on Bald Mountain) is an orchestral work by Mussorgsky inspired by the witches’ Sabbath in Gogol’s story of “St. John’s Eve.” It was composed in 1867 as an orchestral work, revised in 1872 as an operatic choral piece, and revised and re-orchestrated by Rimsky-Korsakov in 1886. The latter is now the concert favorite and the one most often programmed. However, millions of 20th century listeners owe their initial acquaintance with the music to Leopold Stokowski who composed a version in 1940 for Walt Disney’s animated masterpiece, Fantasia.
My favorite Disney clip featuring Stokowski’s Night on Bald Mountain has been deleted from Youtube. It was removed, allegedly, on “copyright grounds.” I can’t help but notice, however, that many other Disney clips remain on Youtube. This selective action, I suspect, is corporate Disney yielding to the demands of a small band of viewers who complain about the so-called “demonic imagery” in the “Night on Bald Mountain.” To those viewers I say “Get a Life!”
Fortunately, Stokowski’s music is still on Youtube but without the Disney animation:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qu970EXXGzQ
In fact, an animated version of Night on Bald Mountain preceded Disney. It is by Alexeieff, it was produced in 1933 and it isn’t bad at all:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYbjW7XrWDo
Finally, the Disney animation survives on the web (for how long is anyone’s guess) but without Leopold Stokowski conducting the orchestra. Check it out here:

A leading feature in the appearance of Ballets Russes are the gorgeous color combinations of Leon Bakst, whose work was the sensation of art galleries and a dominant influence in the fashion world. He was the most distinguished artist in line and color that the theater had at the time. The beauty of Diaghilev's company springs from the costumes and scenery that Bakst designed for it. "Color should afford a joy for the eye." - Bakst
Le Dieu Bleu [The Blue God] premiered in Paris on May 13, 1912. Leon Bakst did the set and costume designs, Fokine did the choreography and the ballet was set to the music of Reynaldo Hahn. "Set in mythical India, the ballet opens at a shrine of the Blue God, which is surrounded by rocks and cliffs with a lotus pond in the centre. Worshippers and a young neophyte, soon to become a priest, gather and wait for the ordination ceremony to commence. After the high priest arrives the ceremony begins but is interrupted by the novice's lover, attempting to rescue him from priesthood. She is captured and imprisoned in the shrine, where she is threatened by its resident monsters. While trying to escape she inadvertently lets loose a plethora of monsters. She appeals to the shrine's deity for help and the Blue God and Goddess both rise from the lotus pond. The Blue God subdues the monsters, the lovers are reunited and the gods return to their celestial abodes." [Synopsis by the National Gallery of Australia]

“Giselle is a ballet in two acts with a libretto by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Théophile Gautier, music by Adolphe Adam, and choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot. The librettist took his inspiration from a poem by Heinrich Heine. The ballet tells the story of a lovely peasant girl named Giselle who has a passion for dancing, and when she finds out the man she loves is engaged to someone else she dies of a broken heart. Giselle was first presented by the Ballet du Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique at the Salle Le Peletier in Paris, France, on 28 June 1841. The choreography in modern productions generally derives from the revivals of Marius Petipa for the Imperial Russian Ballet (1884, 1899,1903)… Petipa’s definitive version was performed by the Ballets Russes in 1910 at the Palais Garnier.” [Wikipedia]
Two excellent versions of the ballet are on Youtube:
