This year we have enjoyed this species in the ravine called La Puça, we have seen copulations and spawning and next year we hope that its presence will be as important as this one.

We will try to follow the place hoping to see an emergency.

Although the season of dragonflies (generic name) should have finished already, there are still some species, in very few numbers, that fly around these parts, defend their territory and try some copulation.

It is possible that this is motivated by the autumn and winter so warm that we are "suffering".

While they are flying, a photo will be attempted.

The American white ibis (Eudocimus albus) is a species of bird in the ibis family, Threskiornithidae. It is found from Virginia via the Gulf Coast of the United States south through most of the coastal New World tropics. This ibis is a medium-sized bird with an overall white plumage, bright red-orange down-curved bill and long legs, and black wing tips that are usually only visible in flight. Males are larger and have longer bills than females. The breeding range runs along the Gulf and Atlantic Coast, and the coasts of Mexico and Central America.

Their diet consists primarily of small aquatic prey, such as insects and small fishes. Crayfish are its preferred food in most regions, but it can adjust its diet according to the habitat and prey abundance. Its main foraging behavior is probing with its beak at the bottom of shallow water to feel for and capture its prey. It does not see the prey.

During the breeding season, the American white ibis gathers in huge colonies near water. Pairs are predominantly monogamous and both parents care for the young, although males tend to engage in extra-pair copulation with other females to increase their reproductive success.

Human pollution has affected the behavior of the American white ibis via an increase in the concentrations of methylmercury, which is released into the environment from untreated waste. Exposure to methylmercury alters the hormone levels of American white ibis, affecting their mating and nesting behavior and leading to lower reproduction rates. Wikipedia

A mating pair will court several times during breeding periods to strengthen their bond. Courtship displays include touching bills and following one another in elaborate flight patterns. Once the pre-laying period begins, males will constantly guard their mates by knocking other males away with their bills. The pair will mate up to 80 times in a 30-day period to ensure fertilization. Females will sometimes encourage other males to engage in copulation to guarantee successful fecundity.

The mating pair will often reuse the same site every year, and Females lay a single egg per year, usually from late April to May.

I went to the river for a short walk during my lunch break. Mr and Mrs goose were having a dance which is usually the prelude for a rape. Male geese are quite brutal and almost drown their partners when copulating, no wonder that the females are often not so very willing ....

These are knob geese, also called Chinese geese. They are a domesticated breed but these are wild animals.

Alligator usually catch their meals at dusk or dawn, so, when I saw this one having a late breakfast I stood there and watched it consume this cooter. From what I could see, the cooter or slider turtle is male (judging from its long hind claws, which he uses to caress the female during copulation). I was not able to identify the cooter species. The alligator is an old acqaitance. If you seach for some of my other alligator photos, it is the one with all the babies crawling on her back and head. She is a prolific and caring mother, who protects her babies ferociously. You'll notice she is missing her right foot. She lost it to the male who attacked the nestlings and got away with a few.

These birds do not establish breeding pairs; they separate after copulation and females provide all parental care. Ruby-throated hummingbirds can raise up to three broods each year. Ruby-throated hummingbirds breed between March and July, with mid-May being the height of the breeding season.

Mantises are mostly ambush predators, but a few ground-dwelling species are found actively pursuing their prey. They normally live for about a year. In cooler climates, the adults lay eggs in autumn, then die. The eggs are protected by their hard capsules and hatch in the spring. Females sometimes practice sexual cannibalism, eating their mates after copulation. Mantises were considered to have supernatural powers by early civilizations, including Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, and Assyria. A cultural trope popular in cartoons imagines the female mantis as a femme fatale. Mantises are among the insects most commonly kept as pets. (Wikipedia)

I just returned from three weeks in Brazil, and while those photos will take some time to evaluate and process, I'll start with a photo of copulating darners taken at Lake Mary, Arizona, to kick things off.

The gatekeeper or hedge brown (Pyronia tithonus) is most commonly found in southern and eastern Britain and coastal areas of south and south-east Ireland. It is also found in the Channel Islands, but not in Scotland nor the Isle of Man. Given its preference for warmer weather, the restriction of range expansion can be assumed to be due to climate. Colonies vary in size depending on the available habitat, and can range from a few dozen to several thousand butterflies.

The gatekeeper is orange with two large brown spots on its wings and a brown pattern on the edge of its wings. The eyespots on the fore wings most likely reduce bird attacks, therefore the gatekeeper is often seen resting with its wings open. A large number of aberrant forms are known, such as excessa, where specimens have two to four extra spots on the fore wing upperside. The number of spots on the hind wing underside also varies.

The male has a dark patch on the upper side of the fore wing that contains scent-producing scales known as the androconia. This is most likely for courtship purposes.[6] Androconia have evolved through sexual selection for the purpose of releasing pheromones for attracting mates. Little is known about how androconia actually function during courtship, and the chemical composition of the pheromones is unknown.

Females typically have more spots than males. Males have more costally placed eyespots, compared to the females, whose eyespots are more spread over the wing margin.

One generation of gatekeeper butterflies occurs each year, with adults emerging in July and peaking in early August, and only a few adults remain at the end of the month. No specific courtship ritual is known, but the male scent spots most likely play a role. Males set up small territories and actively seek out a mate.Copulation lasts about an hour, during which the butterflies remain stationary with their wings closed. Females lay between 100 and 200 eggs, usually in the shade or at random by ejecting eggs into the air. Initially, larvae are yellow, but soon develop brown patches and continue to darken as they develop within the egg. Eggs hatch after about 14 days.

As with many grasshoppers in various families, the males are smaller than the females and ride on them long before copulation. They remain there during the period in which the female achieves sexual receptiveness. Similar strategies are common in vertebrates such as some amphibians, as well as various invertebrates, where the males attempt to keep rivals from mating with the female. (From Wikipedia)

Culex pipiens' diet typically consists of vertebrate blood, as they consume human blood, but prefer bird blood of species that are nearly linked to human interaction, such as doves and pigeons.[3] Furthermore, at the end of the summer and the start of the fall season before it is time for them to overwinter, C. pipiens subsist on nectar and other sugary food sources in order to store fat.

Typically, mosquitoes copulate when temperatures are the most temperate, and many species begin breeding when temperatures reach 50 °F (10 °C). Because of this temperature condition, mosquito breeding seasons vary by region and climate characteristics of a given area.

Argiope argentata

(Silver Argiope / Araña Plateada de Jardín)

Argiope argentata, commonly known as the silver argiope due to the silvery color of its cephalothorax, is a member of the orb-weaver spider family Araneidae.

This species resides in arid and warm environments in South America, Central America, Southern California, Florida, Arizona, Texas, and the Caribbean. Argiope argentata are commonly seen and photographed by hikers in Southern California and the Andes Mountains.

Like other species of Argiope, its venom is not harmful to humans; however, it can be employed to immobilize its prey. A. argentata engages in sexual cannibalism either mid- or post-copulation.

Argiope argentata are relatively harmless to human beings. If thoroughly and intentionally provoked, these spiders might bite out of self defense. Their venom is not toxic to humans and rarely causes any sort of adverse reactions. In fact, the bites of Argiope argentata are relatively comparable to a bee sting - with only minor redness and occasional swelling resulting. Despite being relatively harmless to humans, the bites of A. argentata can prove deadly to smaller animals such as insects and rodents. They are effective ways for the spiders to kill their prey once they have been immobilized.

The breeding season starts in December, and typically lasts around six weeks. During this time, male herds break up into smaller groups that search for females. The rut takes place in two phases. In the first phase, the male groups interact with the females who are all in oestrous. The higher the male's rank, the closer he can get to a female. Males perform courtship displays. In the second phase of the rut, one male separates from his group to follow an individual female. He displays to her and guards her from other males. Before copulation, the female moves her tail and courtship becomes more intensive. They copulate and then he rejoins his group and reverts to the first phase.Gestation lasts around 167 days, and results in the birth of one or two kids, with twins making up about 20% of births.

Alpine ibex reach sexual maturity at eighteen months, but females do not reach their maximum body size for five to six years, and males not for nine to eleven years. The horns grow throughout life, growing most rapidly during the second year of life, and thereafter by about 8 centimetres (3.1 in) a year, eventually slowing to half that rate once the animal reaches ten years of age. Alpine ibex live for up to nineteen years in the wild.

Ischnura graellsii, ♂♀

This is one of the first photos I took of the Ischnura graellsii, in copulation, with a type B female (infuscans), it was in Villena with the excellent afternoon light in an area that was created thanks to a water leak, today Once the damage had been repaired, the humid area where there were interesting species such as Orthetrum brunneum ... and some others disappeared. I thank Ricardo Menor, who took me to the place and I was able to photograph these species for the first time, so I will always be in his debt.

Vertically hanging mating pair

Mating in dragonflies is not gentle. Females venturing near the water are immediately grabbed by a male for mating. He does this by grabbing the female with his abdominal appendages behind the head. Often this is accompanied by a struggle in the air. It is possible that the female does not immediately bring her genital opening to the male’s secondary copulation organ, causing them to remain hanging vertically.

American Avocets do a dance display immediately after copulation. The birds stand side to side and cross bills. They walk in a circle and the male puts his wing over the female. This is a photo of the display. It was beautiful to watch. The photo was taken at Frank Lake in Alberta Canada. - Recurvirostra americana
