this falls into the category of... "oh, that's how they do that".........

was driving down US route 1 (you know the one that goes from maine all the way down to florida), when i caught sight of a flame in my peripheral vision. always intensely curious about things i've never seen before, i turned around at gillette stadium and went back. this is in the parking lot of a nice restaurant and this is how they get rid of the pesky grass that grows up in the cracks of the parking lot pavement--

a flame thrower. it is a wand with a flexible hose, attached to a propane tank, i think.

it reminds me of coming up over a hill in kansas after dark and seeing the horizon lit with a line of fire because they were burning off the wheat stubble after the harvest.

slider sunday....... the original was not quite so dramatic (see below)

i tweaked it by pumping up the contrasts and, since this was a case where negative space didn't really serve to underline the action, i cropped it :)

Artist's impression of Heracles landing on the Moon.

ESA is working with the Canadian and Japanese space agencies to prepare the Heracles robotic mission to the Moon in the mid-to-late-2020s. Using the Gateway as a halfway point, a robotic rover will scout the terrain in preparation for the future arrival of astronauts, and deliver lunar samples to Earth.

This mission offers the best and earliest chance to deliver Moon samples to Earth on NASA’s Orion spacecraft.

Goals also include testing new hardware, demonstrating technology and gaining experience in operations while strengthening international partnerships in exploration.

A small lander with a rover inside weighing around 1800 kg in total will land and be monitored by astronauts from the space gateway. An ascent module will take off from the surface and return to the gateway with samples taken by the rover.

Heracles will demonstrate these technologies and prove their value for humans. Later missions will include a pressurised rover driven by astronauts and an ascent module for the crew to return home.

Communications are key, with satellites providing high-speed networks to operate rovers from orbit, including feeding visuals from cameras, control signals to move the cameras, arms and wheels, and transmitting scientific data.

When the ascent module carrying the sample container arrives, the Gateway’s robotic arm will capture and berth it with the outpost’s airlock for unpacking and transfer of the container to Orion and subsequent flight to Earth with returning astronauts.

Heracles is an international programme to use the Gateway to the fullest and deliver samples to scientists on Earth using new technology that is more capable and lighter than previous missions.

°!° as a matter of fact, this is me enjoying the sun shining through the little window - a reflection in the glass of the radio controlled clock in my bathroom.

The jewelwing damselflies were staying close by me in the woods which seemed a bit strange until I saw what they were eating - it was mosquitos. I was the lure.

So all the massive mosquito control programs failed to stop the mosquitos. But grasshoppers and many other insects now are scarce!

Thanks everyone for all the comments I've been getting. It's really such a pleasure for me to see everyone's photos - they have provided such inspiration. And it's really been invaluable to get Id's and corrections on mine.

Tysso 1 was protected by the Cultural Heritage Act in 2000 and the power plant has in recent years restored under the leadership of AS Tyssefaldene in cooperation with the Norwegian Museum of Hydropower and Industry. The power plant is filled with new activities. The museum is located in Tyssefaldene's old administration building and tells the exciting story of hydropower and industrial development.

I love thimbleberries and the way the great bright green leaves always seem to grow in between the dark northern woods and the roadside. The berries are good too! We don't have these plants in Mid Michigan so it was good to see them when I was in the Upper Peninsula, even if I was too early for the berries.

I'm not very happy with the results; I overworked the background with too much French Ultramarine which gave it a matte finish and I lost control of the leaves. Still it was fun to do and gave me some good ideas for future paintings.

I think these were door controls. I didn't press the buttons to find out.

I have the autumn in palm of my hand. I feel the taste of grapes and nuts. The colors have changed into red, yellow and orange, and that make's me dream again and again. ( I miss those days... )

The Homewood Izaak Walton Preserve in Homewood, Illinois has been conducting controlled burns for many years. These burns help eliminate non-native vegetation and promote healthy prairie and wooded areas for all to enjoy, including the wildlife that lives in our preserve.
