Campaigners in Ottawa ask countries to sprint with them and join the #RaceTo50.

The suffering in Darfur is on an almost unimaginable scale: some 4.5 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance and their number continues to grow as violence and intimidation forces thousands more to flee their homes each month. Many have been forced to abandon their homes several times to try to find some kind of safety. (link)

Countless women and girls have been raped. Hundreds of villages have been bombed and burned; water sources and food stocks have been destroyed, property and livestock looted. Mosques, schools and hospitals have been burnt to the ground. (link)

Here are recreations in LEGO of drawing done by children survivors of such attacks. These drawing are to be allowed as evidence in war crimes trials. (link)

The original drawings and testimony can be found:

here, here, here, and here

In making these models I came across a campaign that is trying to stop arms ending up in the wrong hands - like the ones my models show. If you want to do something about this situation, you can help control the flow of weapons world wide by joining the Control Arms petition to President Obama calling for his support for an effective arms trade treaty [LINK]

Go on, do your bit and sign the petition.

“... Em todas as camadas sociais, mesmo naquelas que passam fomes e privações, a infância é, mais do que todas as idades posteriores, repletas de interesses de ordem sexual. Além disso, devemos ter em mente, que a fome, até o ponto do desgaste físico, só atingem uma grande parte das crianças, enquanto a repressão sexual atinge, sem exceção, todas as crianças, de todas as camadas sócias... O primeiro mandamento do trabalho antifascista consiste em não dissimular a realidade...”

Of the entire country, incredibly it seems that our own municipality of Diadema, in the southern region of greater São Paulo, has turned out to be the only municipality in Brazil with a more or less even vote on the Referendum to ban the trade of firearms and ammunition to the general public. Actually not so surprising when one thinks of the historic high death toll due to firearms in our region.

We have certainly registered a decline in the number of violent deaths since the local government introduced its controversial “dry law” in 2002, which resulted in the closing of bars and restaurants between 23.00 – 06.00hrs. This along with other preventive politics and NGO social development programmes involving children and youth in the region, has obviously had a positive effect on the public, who contrary to the rest of Brazil, mean that a Brazil with less arms will be a much better place for all.

At least it seems our efforts have not been wasted and we will carry on implementing our programme with this positive result in mind.

Congratulations Diadema!

I suppose we need to believe in something if we don’t believe in ourselves.

Today the Brazilian people lost their chance to prove to themselves and the world that all they really want is a more just society. Who’ll believe them now?

With a two-thirds majority vote against banning the trade of firearms to the public, 59 million of those who voted seem to think that our society will be safer with guns.

To me this simply proves how ignorant our people are!

I think these words by Carlos Eduardo Zuma, received by Tatiana Cardeal from a friend, which I have taken the liberty to translate and post here below for those who don’t understand Portuguese, really sum up what today’s Referendum in Brazil has been all about:

"I believe it to be a choice that goes far beyond a decision to whether or not we prohibit the trade of firearms in Brazil.

We are choosing what kind of society we want to be: turned towards individualism, an “every man for himself” attitude, or an organized society with social justice and citizenship"

Sadly, we have failed!

May the Gods have mercy on us!
