While financial inclusion and financial deepening can promote economic growth and contribute significantly to denting poverty and inequality that is rampant in the region, there are also concerns that it could aggravate systemic risk and financial instability. Various dimensions of financial inclusion will be explored in this day and a half research workshop hosted by the Institute for Emerging Market Studies (IEMS) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and co-sponsored by Centre on Asia and Globalisation (CAG), at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP), National University of Singapore (NUS).

HackerID: name the best HackerNews contributors

"... Read HackerNews? Want to know who is really contributing? Who the real Hacker Heroes are? I do. So I came up with a simple idea - gather together a summary of HackerNews contributors and summarise the data into a simple format. ..."

I've written a small hack that some readers might find interesting. As the title suggests it puts a name to the best HackerNews submissions, their scores, comments. Most important it identifies who is contributing, what.

As an added bonus I wacked up a quick demo table with sortable columns.

The particular itch scratched here is I want to have access to "data" so I can quickly view the best stories at any time and then work out who is contributing.. I also proved to myself that having the data as opposed to just a web page allows you to do more interesting things than just read.

Caveat

For the moment it's demo technology uploaded from a home machine via ADSL every 15 minutes. So don't rely on feed frequency.

The new train contributes to Network Rail’s commitment to reduce its environmental impact, improve sustainability and reduce the cost of running the railway by 20 per cent over the next five years. It could ultimately lead to a fleet of battery-powered trains running on Britain’s rail network which are quieter and more efficient than diesel-powered trains, making them better for passengers and the environment. Network Rail and its industry partners – including Bombardier, Abellio Greater Anglia, FutureRailway and the Rail Executive arm of the Department for Transport (which is co-funding the project) – recognise the potential for battery-powered trains to bridge gaps between electrified parts of the network and to run on branch lines where it would be too expensive to install overhead electrification

All persons that have contributed to the Never Forget Rose Garden:

A big Thank You for participating in this now "international" endeavor of the Society of the Honor Guard of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The garden at St. Paul's now has 38 roses planted (10 new ones in 2022) and they are in FULL BLOOM. I encourage you to make a trip to the garden and walk the pathways looking at the beauty and uniqueness of each - they are really something and the neighborhood is noticing. Most of the roses have tags with the rose names - the new ones are still to be tagged soon. This morning while dead-heading (three full boxes full today!) two morning walkers stopped to say "thank you" for installing the roses saying they admire the garden almost daily.

A couple of weeks ago we held the 2nd Garden Blessing after church for the new roses with about 18 people in attendance. Gavin McIlvenna is to be commended for his leadership role as President of the "Society of the Honor Guard Tomb of the Unknown Soldier" these past many months making the Never Forget Gardens one of his notable projects having the American Rose Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution as close partners resulting now in over 300 Never Forget Gardens worldwide. Gavin and Amy participated recently in a re-enactment of the WW I "unknown" being selected and transported from France to the shores of America with a unique white rose, Nephitos, on the casket the entire distance. After some in depth research 40 of these same rose plants became available for purchase in the United States and WE HAVE ONE IN OUR GARDEN. It is a delicate low-growing rose bush with small delicate white blossoms located in front of the "juniper bench" in the garden - be sure to take note when you visit.

I am planning on a garden registry to be displayed inside the church, with handouts being available, listing the rose names, persons recognized and donors

Global Citizenship Program (GCP) 67 | Pathways to Global Citizenship: Roots and Routes

City University of New York (CUNY), Salzburg, Austria (April 4 to 11, 2015)

__

Tomorrow's leaders must think and act as global citizens in order to address the challenges facing humanity. Broadly defined, global citizens are people who are consciously prepared to live and work in the complex interdependent society of the 21st century and contribute to improving the common global welfare of our planet and its inhabitants. The program aims to engage participating students as global citizens, helping them develop the knowledge, skills, values, and commitment to:

Understand the nature of globalization, including its positive and negative impacts around the world, and realize how it is transforming human society;

Appreciate the diversity of humanity in all of its manifestations, from local to global, and interact with different groups of people to address common concerns;

Recognize the critical global challenges that are compromising humanity's future and see how their complexity and interconnections make solutions increasingly difficult; and

Collaborate with different sets of stakeholders, by thinking globally and acting locally, to resolve these critical challenges and build a more equitable and sustainable world.

The session format includes lectures and discussions with an international faculty as well as formal and informal work in small groups. Topics addressed in plenary lectures and discussions include globalization and global responsibility; the social, economic, and political aspects of migration; the historical legacy of the Holocaust, human rights, humanitarian intervention; sustainable development; and the implications of the United States' influence around the world.

Participants will consider how these issues relate to their current situations and future personal, educational, and professional plans. They will also have the opportunity to develop projects and activities related to the session topic that can be implemented at their colleges and universities, in their local communities, and beyond.
