Completed in 1928, the Hoquiam River Bridge is a patented double-leaf Strauss underneath-counterweight bascule bridge – the only one built in Washington before 1940. The Strauss Bascule Bridge Company was one of the most important bridge building firms in the United States during the early 20th century. The contractors, Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Company, was a significant engineering and construction firm in the Northwest, building the Wishkah Bridge (1925), Lake Washington Floating Bridge (1940) and the Hood Canal Bridge. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 (NRHP No. 82004217 as the Hoquiam River Bridge).
