STUDI is a grant program for area teachers to learn more about science teaching.

The wind was so strong I had difficulty keeping the horizon level... and that's shooting from inside through an open window.

Today we continue our visit of one of the most iconic monuments of my November photo trip to the southern French provinces of Languedoc and Roussillon, and one of the most famous Benedictine abbeys of all times: Saint Michael of Cuxa.

The origins of the abbey go back to 840, when the monastery was created just after the Muslims were defeated and chased away. In its original locale near Eixelada, this first settlement endured a catastrophic flooding in 878. The 35 surviving monks moved to Cuxa, and under the protection of the earls of Cerdagne-Conflent, the abbey began to be built and prospered as early as the 900s. Cuxa fought for and obtained privileges of jurisdiction, thereby escaping religious authority, except that of the Pope, and secular authority, except that of the local King of Cerdagne.

Appointed abbot by King Sunifred II around 960, Garin (also referred to as Warinus), already head of five other monasteries, introduced a Cluniac reform and cut the last ties with the secular powers. He built a first church to replace the small initial chapel first mentioned in writing in 938. On his way back from a pilgrimage in Rome and Venice, Warinus convinced Doge Pietro Orseolo to abandon power, wife and children, and the pair fled Venice in the night of September 1, 978 —not leaving behind, however, a substantial part of the Doge’s riches, as well as two hermits, Marinus and Romuald. The presence of such illustrious guests at the abbey attracted large pilgrim crowds until the death of Doge Orseolo, in odor of sainthood, in 987. His companions returned to Italy where Romuald founded the order of the Camaldolese.

Warinus died around Year 1000 and was succeeded by the famous Oliba, elected abbot in 1008. He will go down in History as the great builder of Cuxa, as well as the one who considerably expanded the real estate domain owned by the abbey, which was already very substantial.

Decline began for Cuxa, like for so many other monasteries, with the end of the Middle Ages and the weakening and corruption of the faith brought about by the Renaissance. The monks stopped living communal life, the buildings fell into disrepair as the proceeds from the abbey’s domains were diverted and appropriated by the monks, and when it was sold to private owners in 1791, in the wake of the French Revolution, the abbey was in a sorry state. In 1907, an American managed to acquire a number of the capitals of the cloister and exported them to the USA where they formed the basis for The Cloisters museum in New York City.

Monks (Cistercians, indeed) returned to Cuxa after World War I, to be replaced by Benedictines from Montserrat in 1965. Extensive restoration campaigns began in 1940 and the monastery was finally listed as a Historic Landmark in 1958. It still functions as a working Benedictine abbey today.

The façade of the abbey church. I’m truly sorry for not being able to give you a wider and more comprehensive shot, but there was absolutely no space to step back because of works being carried on. An ugly fence to the left also prohibited me from shooting horizontally.

You can still see that the main portal also is an arc outrepassé, and you can, by comparison, appreciate the size of the enormous gable window: the church was not designed to be vaulted, and never was, which of course puts a lot less stress on the walls and allows for larger openings without unreasonable risks of endangering the structure.

Continuing with our 1987 train trip, and spending some time at Tie Siding.

As part of a continued drive to involve staff and students in sustainability initiatives at the University, a Fairtrade cake bake-off competition was organised as part of Fairtrade Fortnight, as the University, Students’ Union and Baxter Storey joined forces. Cakes were baked and entered into a competition that was judged by Pro-Vice Chancellor Maxine Melling, Pia Cato, Owner of The Vanilla Pod Bakery based in Cheltenham and Students’ Union Sports Officer (and freelance cake judge!) James Armah. The winning cake was made by staff member Barbara Rainbow, who is Sustainability Co-ordinator and Administrator at the University.

Flood waters continue to rise in Conway, S.C., impacting surrounding cities and neighborhoods to include Myrtle Beach, S.C., Sept. 25, 2018. South Carolina National Guard Engineers and Transportation Corps placed sandbags along Highway 501 to ensure roadways remain passable and communities are not cut-off on the main route to highly populated Myrtle Beach, S.C. They have laid nearly three miles of barrier protecting a mile and a half of road with sandbags and flood barriers to keep the road open from flooding. There are approximately 2,000 South Carolina Guards Soldiers and Airmen are currently on duty to support local authorities in response and recovery operations to the ongoing flooding in that followed Hurricane Florence's landfall. U.S. National Guard Soldiers and Airmen from Pennsylvania, Alaska, New York, Tennessee, Arkansas, Maryland, Virginia, Mississippi and Georgia are also supporting the S.C. National Guard recovery efforts. (U.S. National Guard photo by Senior Master Sgt. Edward Snyder, 169th Fighter Wing, Public Affairs)

Farm complex noted for grist mill, cotton gin, general store, blacksmith shop. Owned by John Thornton Dulaney (1825-1916), who in 1849 left his native Virginia going to California gold rush. He married Mary Jane Gates (1836-1925) whose parents settled in Texas in 1821: Dulaney's home at this site was built in 1868, after his return from Civil War. Nearby were church and school built by Dulaney for neighborhood. He had five children. With millhands, he often fed 35 people daily.

Dulaney, an inventor, made mill parts as needed. His business continued until about 1912. (1970) (Marker No. 4772)

Hi Family,

Thanks so much for your continued support and prayer. We love being able to

share this journey with you all! We visited our doctor for a normal

check-up last Tuesday and everything looks great. It's neat having Giulian

there with me since he's on a school break. He got to hear the baby's

heartbeat through the Baby Doppler for the first time! My doctor was

pleased that I've gained weight since I was behind in our previous

appointments. All you have to do is look at my new photos to see the proof!

She also commented on how crazy the baby is, moving around so much that she

struggled to keep her heartbeat on the monitor! I can feel her kicking

around a lot every day, it's nuts. I'm feeling good, not sick any more, and

am really glad that my normal life requires a lot of walking.

Today we got to tour the hospital that we'll be delivering at. It's only

about 1 mile away and is very nice. We're really excited and feel quite

privileged that we get to deliver there. Every room is private and has

various amenities that help with labor like a jacuzzi tub! It was great to

anticipate the day we'll be there and ask questions, it seems like a great

fit for us.

We'll have the next ultrasound that I mentioned in the previous email to

check on the baby's growth in 4 weeks on Tue, Oct 9th, so I'll plan to let

you all know how things are going then. I begin my 3rd trimester already at

the end of next week! Then the week of the 24th Giulian begins fall quarter

when he's taking both Physics and Chemistry. So needless to say we're

soaking up the last bit of the beautiful summer sun here in Seattle.

I attached some updated pics of me as well as a couple pics from our recent

vacation to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico! We got to spend a whole week there and

it was such a blessing. So glad we got to take a "babymoon"! There's a

picture of us on a boat in front of the famous rock structures and one of

Giulian eating tacos at our favorite seafood taqueria, including a marlin

taco!

Love to you all,

An arrest outside the Hatfield Federal Courthouse in Portland, Oregon on the night of July 26, 2020. The activists were protesting the presence of federal officers in the city, and continuing the Black Lives Matter protests that started after the murder of George Floyd.

Portland has been roiled by nightly protests following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. President Donald Trump said he sent federal agents to Oregon’s largest city to halt the unrest but state and local officials say they are making the situation worse.

The clashes in Portland have further inflamed the nation’s political tensions and triggered a crisis over the limits of federal power as Trump moves to send U.S. officers to other Democratic-led cities he says are violent.

Look t the Original size of this photo to see the sharp detail of rocks, vegetation, & yet another very steep portion of the overall climb.

Recently returned to service after a mechanical exam, 6A rests at Belgrave before taking the Murder Mystery dinner train to Nobelius Siding.

The ridge continued their impressive start to the season with a 5-0 win against Bacup which sees them up into 3rd in the league. Goals from Tom Ince (2), Morrison, Hart and an own goal.

To continue from Wikipedia: During its construction the west abutment and the adjacent pier slipped during the process of tipping fill material behind it, and it and the first pier settled significantly, distorting the first arch crown to rise, delaying the opening. The displaced foundations were stabilised and the third arch was strengthened by means of a diaphragm wall; the distorted first arch was given a brick arch ring. The line of the viaduct parapet shows a very significant drop at this end, but the structure had been stabilised and did not move further.

This is about 10 miles away from Iao Valley (www.flickr.com/photos/52544814@N00/14419287660/). Such a vast difference between the north-east part of the West Mountain and the south-east part.

Obviously we are not in rain forest territory here.

This trail was quite old (about 200 years old) and used to be how the Hawaiians crossed the mountain to get to the west/desert side of the island (where Lahaina is, the town where I started my holiday with July 4th celebrations).

It gains ~1600 feet in 2.5 miles. I almost didn't do it as I set aside my final full day on Maui for relaxation (I rented a condo directly on the beach and intended to spend all day there reading and sipping Mai Tais). I am glad that the urge to climb took over me. This was a great hike.

Keep holding on

Cause you know we'll make it through,

we'll make it through

Just stay strong

cause you know I'm here for you,

I'm here for you!

This is a photograph from the finish of the 36th Michael Manning Memorial "Dunshaughlin 10KM" Road Race and Fun Run which took place in Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath, Ireland on Saturday 20th June 2015 at 19:30. This race is widely acknowledged within the Irish running community as one of the best races in Ireland. While being very well attended and competitive it is also one of the oldest 10KM races in Ireland. The numbers for this race have exceeded expectations year on year for the past number of years. In 2008 a record field of 306 took to the start line but by 2012 this number had more than doubled with 647 runners taking part. The starting numbers in 2013 topped this again at 668. Last year, 2014, the numbers rocketed to a new record of 883. This year 862 finished the race showing that the race continues to attract very substantial crowds. This year, as in previous years, the race attracted runners from not just all of Leinster but from the four corners of Ireland. Who knows but this race could reach 1,000 entrants next year? The work of the organising committee must be commended on making this event possible. The Dunshaughlin 10KM has earned it's place at the top of the pedestal of Irish running through the sheer hard work of Dunshaughlin AC over the years. Road race events do not survive on their own. There must be dedication, hard work and a development vision amongst the committee and the host club. Well done to all.

We have an extensive set of photographs from the race tonight taken at the 9KM mark and at 400M to go. The full set is available at: www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157654823417232

USING OUR PHOTOGRAPHS - A QUICK GUIDE AND ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS

Can I use these photographs directly from Flickr on my social media account(s)?

Yes - of course you can! Flickr provides several ways to share this and other photographs in this Flickr set. You can share directly to: email, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Tumblr, LiveJournal, and Wordpress and Blogger blog sites. Your mobile, tablet, or desktop device will also offer you several different options for sharing this photo page on your social media outlets.

BUT..... Wait there a minute....

We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. We do not charge for our photographs. Our only "cost" is that we request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, VK.com, Vine, Meetup, Tagged, Ask.fm,etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us or acknowledge us as the original photographers.

This also extends to the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

I want to download these pictures to my computer or device?

You can download this photographic image here directly to your computer or device. This version is the low resolution web-quality image. How to download will vary slight from device to device and from browser to browser. Have a look for a down-arrow symbol or the link to 'View/Download' all sizes. When you click on either of these you will be presented with the option to download the image. Remember just doing a right-click and "save target as" will not work on Flickr.

I want get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?

If you just need these photographs for online usage then they can be used directly once you respect their Creative Commons license and provide a link back to our Flickr set if you use them. For offline usage and printing all of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution.

Please email petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com with the links to the photographs you would like to obtain a full resolution copy of. We also ask race organisers, media, etc to ask for permission before use of our images for flyers, posters, etc. We reserve the right to refuse a request.

In summary please remember when requesting photographs from us - If you are using the photographs online all we ask is for you to provide a link back to our Flickr set or Flickr pages. You will find the link above clearly outlined in the description text which accompanies this photograph. Taking these photographs and preparing them for online posting takes a significant effort and time. We are not posting photographs to Flickr for commercial reasons. If you really like what we do please spread the link around your social media, send us an email, leave a comment beside the photographs, send us a Flickr email, etc. If you are using the photographs in newspapers or magazines we ask that you mention where the original photograph came from.

I would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets
