(June 15, 2011) Department of Defense (DoD) civilian employees and reserve component Soldiers at Naval Magazine Indian Island guide a crane to lock on a 20-foot container holding ammunition during the Turbo Containerized Ammunition Distribution System 2011 (CADS) joint-military exercise. Turbo CADS is a Joint Chiefs of Staff-funded, United Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) sponsored exercise designed to test the DoD's ability to transport munitions in 20-foot commercial containers, using commercial vessels. Customs houses were built in all major Australian ports in the nineteenth century. Customs and excise duties were an important source of revenue, levied on goods from overseas and in some cases from other colonies. The port of Brisbane grew quickly so in 1884 the Queensland government agreed to replace its existing Customs House at Petrie Bight, a modest single storey brick structure, with a much grander edifice. Designed by Charles McLay of the Colonial Architect’s office, it is two storeys high on the Queen Street frontage, while three storeys are visible from the river side. Its grand public space, The Long Room, is surmounted by a copper sheathed dome. With work commencing in 1886, this imposing and rare surviving masterpiece of the Colonial Architects Office took three years and £38,346 to build.
The Brisbane Customs House is a fine example of Victorian Free Classical style, with its grand colonnades and portico, and a dome which still manages to be a major feature on the landscape, despite being overlooked by adjacent high rise office and apartment blocks.
After Federation in 1901 the Customs House became part of the commonwealth government’s customs service and some of its elegant rooms were carved up as offices. Surrounded by busy wharves and trams, it became one of Brisbane’s best known buildings. With the move to containerization all the major wharves in central Brisbane were demolished, with new wharves being built much nearer the river mouth. In 1988 the Customs House, which at its peak had 300 staff, closed and custom activities left their symbolic home on the river for an office block up the road. The Customs House is one of the few reminders that central Brisbane was once a great river port.
Conscious of the heritage value of the House, the Commonwealth government negotiated a lease with the University of Queensland which agreed to restore the property, generously supported by donations. Customs House re-opened in October 1994 and the building now serves as a downtown presence for many university activities. Its magnificent Long Room and other public rooms are available for a variety of cultural, community and business functions. Its role as a Customs House can still be seen in a number of historical displays and in the layout and fabric of the building itself.

CEA Project Logistics were contracted for the transportation, assembly and installation of a metal press for a Metal Stamping and Assembly Factory in Rayong province, Thailand.
CEA received a combination of containerized and flat rack OOG cargo to their Cargo Consolidation Facility in Laem Chabang. Each container was unloaded and unstuffed. Several sections of the main bed and tie-rod uprights were assembled by CEA before transportation.
Upon arrival at the factory, the remaining press parts and sections were unloaded and assembled. As several sections were of considerable size and weight CEA erected a temporary gantry crane to assist in installation. The crane was placed over a pre-constructed pit which would house the completed press. The press bed section was lifted and placed into position and aligned on the pit floor.
Other sections were carefully lifted and moved into place with the crown section being installed last. Tie rods and bolts were tightened to complete the assembly of the major sections. The gantry crane was removed to allow a small mobile crane and Elevated Work Platform to install the smaller parts. Upon the project completion, both CEA and the client were very happy with the efficiency and expertise of the installation.

The Victoria Dock area was developed as part of the Port of Melbourne from the 1880s, and became the busiest part of the Port by the 1920s. However, containerization led to a gradual decline of the Victoria Dock and surrounding areas. The old docks could not accommodate container ships, and this led to development of new facilities downstream (closer to the mouth of the river Yarra). Redevelopment was planned from the late 1980s but a series of delays stalled implementation. Construction of the current Marvel Stadium during the late 1990s stimulated interest among investors, and several large-scale development projects were in progress during the early 2000s.
