The brief was to ‘produce a personal response to the topic of consumerism’. On this page I sketched my initial ideas and feelings on the topic along with some artist research I felt may be relevant. I feel like consumerism is shoved in our faces every day, everywhere in our lives. It can be blinding and constricting in the way we view our own happiness and success. I produced a pair of blacked out, steam-punk style goggles made from big brand drinks cans and a restrictive neck collar. They accurately represented my feelings on the matter when worn together.
Digicel is one of the main telcoms in the country and the advertising is widespread and pervasive. Both the signs, the advertisement and the sign for the Madang Chamber of Commerce signify structured economic planning and the establishment of a consumer lifestyle for the people of PNG. Western ideals changing the cultures of these ancient peoples.
