When ACPL cardholder Michael ordered a new mattress online for his family after exploring local options, he'd already spent time researching brands and saving up for the purchase. But when it arrived, not only was the mattress stained, its tags also revealed that it wasn't the mattress he'd thought he was purchasing... It had obviously been refurbished, and this older model included some chemicals he was trying to avoid. He was, to say the least, frustrated.

Customer service told him he could return the mattress for a refund within 24 hours and in the original packaging. The seemingly impossible challenge was accepted. "I was so mad that I actually did it with some creativity, but it took me a good part of a day," he shared. "I can laugh about it now, but at the time, it was awful. I decided I just couldn't order from the same company again."

Like many of us would be, Michael felt spooked and overwhelmed at the very idea of researching and purchasing another mattress. Using Consumer Reports for free with his ACPL library card meant he had access to expert advice on product and company ratings, recalls, and safety information. And the next mattress he ordered was a success!

$5 at the flea market including LOTS of plastic plates and cups and four checkered napkins. I stained it to help it last longer.

Rev. Timmy only made it three more steps before he fainted at the idea of cartons of Camels for $22.

I am going to be slowly updating all of the images that I took of all of my purchases from 1/22/02-4/22/04. This documentation used to be on my website www.obsessiveconsumption.com, but has long since been taken down. I am revisiting these images in order to create new images. I am searching for where the object is now and if still around, I plan on documenting the history it has had over the past few years.

Flickr is going to be my organization buddy in this process.

Most of these images were taken in Lincoln, Nebraska when I was in graduate school.
