Ben gave a talk at Stem Cell symposium at City of Hope Hospital, which ended with a banquet at the Chinese Consulate. I would not have missed this for the world, and so tagged along. The evening started with a large number of speeches - here the Chinese (vice?) consul. To say it was stilted would be an affront to stilts.

I was there for four hours, and got nowhere. The guy with his head in his hands is our representative from the Mongol Rally visa service, the Visa Machine, and he was under the impression that we would be seen at noon. We left at 4 without being seen. We have since been informed that the finger printing machine is broken and we will be able to get a visa without going back to the Consulate. Result.
On April 27, 2009 in Mesa, AZ , Mr. Francois-Xavier Tilliette, Deputy Consul General in Los Angeles named WWII veteran Keith Mansfield a Knight in the French Legion of Honor, the highest French distinction.

The U.S. consulate was stage to a protest last week when Bush came to Brazil. People have broken the windows and thrown red paint all over. Surprsingly, they didn't fix it for a whole week...
