I have been surprised to see two major demolition programmes ongoing near the Luas Tram stop at Smithfield Square.
The project at 56-58 Haymarket is described by the developers as the next stage in the regeneration of the Smithfield district of Dublin. It is also stated that the 6 storey office building, which includes a basement for parking and ground floor retail, will to help animate the streetscape. Over the years there have been many promises relating to Smithfield but for some reason the area fails to inspire.
It should be noted that The Irish Distillers Building in Smithfield Square was demolished in April, despite the fact that part of its east wall was to have been retained according to planning permission. I have heard that the developer is required rebuild the eastern part of the wall as part of the ongoing development. I will be interesting to track this issue going forward.
During the civil war, especially after the Moiwana massacre, thousands of inhabitants fled to French Guyana. Nowadays, the government is building a village again to lure them back, but many people have already rebuilt their life.
This guy tans outside of this construction site at 9am every weekday morning. Most mornings there is also an older man sitting on the bench, watching the tanner. It's a really bizarre thing to see as I head to work everyday.
Look closely and you'll see the tanner.
