Frank describes keeping track of nuclear work being done in Germany during World War II.
Walker: "I'm particularly interested in the nuclear research."
Frank: "Nuclear stuff was not explicitly our problem. But we regarded it as our right and duty to keep a watching brief on anything that... But it was not an explicit general order to all intelligence sources, to send material about that to us. We had sufficiently good contacts with for example the code-breaking people, Frederick Norman, professor of German in London, in peacetime, was supposed to be our liaison man at Bletchley and I guess I talked to Norman on the scrambler phone at least once every day, and anything he thought would interest us, he saw came to us. But virtually nothing that was explicitly nuclear. One or two things that one wondered what they were, that might be, came from that source, generally turned out not to be. What we in fact were able to do I think fairly reliably in that class of evidence was, there couldn't in reality be a big German project which had got far enough to be actually thinking of building bombs, OK? Because if they had made it, if it had existed, well, it might not have had to use radio communication lines. If it did have to use radio communication, it would probably have been granted a special color, a special code block, different, so that when you'd broken another line of traffic, you're not into that one, and there were of course lines of German communication traffic which were not regularly read, I think there might be one or two that never were read, but I think there were, from their traffic habit I think we knew that those that we weren't reading, we knew roughly speaking what kind of thing, or really a lot of constraining factors, what kind of thing they might be dealing with. So I think we were, on the other hand, one could have said of course, if they were making a nuclear bomb, it would be super-secret, and they might have made a ruling that they would never use any radio communication in connection with that, in which case our most reliable source of information would have been unavailable to us. So we were never able to really swear with absolute positive proof that the Germans were not making a bomb. We were only able to say, "It looks to us on all the evidence available that they're not.""

"Give Me Life"
“Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.” Psalms 119:37
There are various kinds of vanity. The cap and bells of the fool, the merriment of the world, the dance, and the cup of the dissolute--all these men know to be vanities; they wear upon their chest their proper name and title. Far more treacherous are those equally vain things--the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches. A man may follow vanity as truly in a portfolio as in a theater.
If he is spending his life in amassing wealth, he passes his days in a vain show. Unless we follow Christ and make our God the great object of life, we only differ in appearance from the most frivolous. It is clear that there is much need of the prayer of our text: "Give me life in your ways." The psalmist confesses that he is dull, heavy, all but dead.
Perhaps, dear reader, you feel the same. We are so sluggish that the best motives cannot quicken us, apart from the Lord Himself. What! Will not hell quicken me? Shall I think of sinners perishing, and yet not be awakened? Will not heaven quicken me? Can I think of the reward that awaits the righteous and yet be cold? Will not death quicken me? Can I think of dying and standing before my God, and yet be slothful in my Master's service? Will not Christ's love constrain me? Can I think of His dear wounds, can I sit at the foot of His cross, and not be stirred with fervency and zeal? It seems so!
No mere consideration can quicken us to zeal, but God Himself must do it; hence the cry, "Give me life in your ways." The psalmist breathes out his whole soul in vehement pleadings; his body and his soul unite in prayer. "Turn my eyes," says the body. "Give me life," cries the soul. This is a fit prayer for every day. O Lord, hear it in my case this night.

Tari Kraton (Palace Dances).
The courtly Javanese palace dance is the type of dances that developed, nurtured and fostered by Javanese Kratons, mainly Yogyakarta Sultanate and Surakarta Sultanate, the patrons of Javanese Mataram culture. Javanese sultans are known as the patron and the creator of Javanese court dances.
Kraton dances employs sets of rules about certain dance movements, body and hand gestures that requires discipline to learn. Gamelan orchestra is the prerequisite for Javanese court dance performances as well as for other Tari Kraton Javanese artforms such as Wayang performances. The serene elegance, slow pace and constrains of its movements gave Javanese dance a meditative traits. Javanese court dances were heavily influenced by Javanese Hindu-Buddhist legacy. As the result the costumes, jewelry and story, often reflects or based on Hindu epic tales of Ramayana and Mahabharata.

In 1962 David Bailey convinced Vogue to send him and Jean Shrimpton to New York. Armed with his 35mm camera and no lighting they took to the streets and shot fashion wherever they wanted free from the constrains of a studio where most fashion shoots were held. I love the atmosphere of the shots and the fact that passers by are sometimes included. Some of the shots have been scanned into this Flickr Set (not by me)...

Today I met up with a Polish model called Malwina and we were inspired to create some similar shots in the streets of Croydon.

Today I met up with a Polish model called Malwina and we were inspired to create some similar shots in the streets of Croydon.
Took another trip down to chi-town with some friends to wander around and take photos. I wanted to constrain myself for the day so just used my 50 f/1.8 lens. It was nice because it makes you think about the composition a little more and the DoF is very nice. But i did pop on the 70-200 f/2.8 while we sat at the bean. It's always fun to try new styles and to people watch :)

As many of you know I big puffy heart love the lensbaby. I have decided as a personal project this year to shoot each month with a different optic. I plan to hopefully experiment so imperfect shots will be the norm but I hope that this may release some creativity. I will not constrain myself to daily shooting but will go with the flow of my busy life and shoot when I can. My 'normal' lens will be reserved for my P52 only!
I have chosen the edge 80 for this month as I cannot get the hang of it on my crop camera (an edge 35 would be ideal!!)

Understanding how companies and markets can create more economic opportunities, and the barriers that constrain the creation of additional jobs and self-employment opportunities is essential to addressing the current challenges of youth underemployment and unemployment.
This session discussed how three private sector organizations are putting youth at the centre of agricultural transformation.

We met this young and very brave and determined girl, Stella. She were forced by her mother to quit school due to the economic constraints of the household. But Stella, having come into contact with the work done by IM and Creccom, reacted differently than what would normally be the case. She ran away, seeking help and demanding to return to school. Usually girls in her situation quit school, often marry young (as young as 13) and become pregnant. Thereby never ever receive any education and with that loosing any real chance of getting out of poverty herself.
The local mothers group, one of many parts of the IM-Creccom initiative "GESI", talked to the mother who changed her mind. Stella is now back in school and doing excellently.
Girls Education Support Initiative (GESI), is funded by IM (IM-SOIR) and are addressing the complexities constraining girls education.
The partnership through Girls Education Support Initiative (GESI) is an integrated approach to address challenges facing girl children through community mobilization including meeting girls’ post-primary education cost.
Creccom explains that the Malawian situation have shown that socio-economic, socio-cultural and school related factors contribute to girls’ poor access to, retention, and performance in school, "but underlying all these factors, however, is a widely shared, negative attitude towards girls’ education. Malawi is a patriarchal society embedded with gender stereotypes that place a low value on girls’ education. Early marriages and pregnancies are commonly cited causes of low girls’ participation in education. "

Over the years, the DIVA Foundation has worked to break the silence and erase the stigma still connected to HIV/AIDS and encourage people to get tested in order to know their HIV status.
The day starts at 7:30 am with a 40-minute drive to the Punta Bandera dock to take a boat on Lago Argentino to Upsala Glacier, a large valley glacier on the eastern side of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Its higher portion lies in a disputed territory between Chile and Argentina. The glacier terminus is at Upsala channel of Lago Argentino. The Upsala Glacier is well known for its rapid retreat that has been ongoing since the glacier was first documented in 1810. The glacier showed almost continual recession up until 1999. The acceleration in ice motion during the two decades preceding 1999 may have been augmented by the release of backstress when the glacier retreated beyond the islands in Brazo Upsala. Another period of even faster retreat started in 2008. As of 2018 Upsala Glacier has retreated to such degree that it no longer constrains its tributary Bertacchi Glacier. The boat then drops us off at the Estancia Cristina, an Argentine cattle and sheep ranch located inside Los Glaciares National Park in Santa Cruz Province. It is here that we take a 4x4 for 45 minutes up a mountain, stop and continue up for another 20 minutes, reaching the summit around 12:30 pm. The ranch was founded in 1914 by Joseph Percival Masters, an Englishman who came to Patagonia with his wife in 1900; Estancia Cristina is named for Masters' daughter Cristina. Located on the coast of Brazo Cristina, a northern channel of Lago Argentino, Estancia Cristina still keeps the history of the Masters family alive. Its lodge has 20 rooms distributed over 5 buildings and it his here that we had lunch followed by a presentation of the traditional Mate, an Argentinean tea and a tour of the ranch. We then take the boat back to Punta Bandera and arrive back at the hotel at 8:00 pm.

This talk will provide an overview on Hornbeck's research agenda, which explores how economies grow and adapt by drawing lessons from the historical development of the American economy. Much of economics is concerned with why some places are poor and some are rich, which is closely related to why some places became rich and some remained poor. His research uses particular historical episodes to better understand issues related to this central theme within economics, as history often provides unique opportunities to understand economic adaptation and growth.
Some common themes in this research include: how enforcement of property rights encourages growth and transaction costs constrain growth; the magnitude of productivity spillovers across firms and their impacts on workers; impacts of market integration; how the economy adapts to a changing environment; and general adaptation to labor or capital scarcity. These topics often relate to how economic behavior and the natural environment combine to shape economic outcomes.

The MID Seminar Series offered a forum for the presentation and in-depth discussion of thematic studies and results developed as part of the Mozambique Institutional Diagnostic (MID) study. Elaborated by key specialists in their fields, the topics covered by the studies include decentralization, education, natural resources, and the rule of law in Mozambique.
Launched in June 2019 by the Inclusive growth in Mozambique programme, the Mozambique Institutional Diagnostic (MID) study is a unique collaboration between various international research institutions, including the University of Copenhagen, UNU-WIDER, and Oxford Policy Management (OPM), and local high-level analysts. The study explores the relationship between the characteristics and functioning of Mozambican institutions and the economic performance of the country. The key goal of the study is to produce an institutional diagnostic tool that allows policymakers to identify institutional weaknesses that constrain economic development and indicates possible directions for reforms and change.

Project Description:
The purpose of this project proposal is to suggest a short and long term solution for the community of St. louis with close attention to Carr Square Neighborhood.
The acceptance of the site, the city of St. Louis will start assimilating, will be closely related to the Jefferson Expansion National Memorial. By integrating the former Pruitt-Igoe site with Downtown St. Louis, along with the industrial/warehouse zone that separates one the site from downtown, will begin to gentrify the area, increase employment, upgrade life quality and of course, insert the site in the map, erasing it’s past.
After further context analysis, the hypothesis points to the use of architecture and urban planning as the translation of cohesion, flux and gentrification to a multifunctional space that must expose all of its contents rather than privatize, limit or constrain its proportions. Just as Peter Noeler explains in The End of Architecture? Documents and Manifestos, -”A new architecture must be formed that is simultaneously aligned with transcultural continuity and with the poetic expression of individual situations and communities [...] rather than conforming to technological or stylistic uniformity, this architecture would be open to the irrationalities of place. It would resist the homogenizing tendencies of standardization”. The location of the site and the complexities of the former use, Pruitt-Igoe, resumes the necessary characteristics that directs all ideas towards the creation of this program.
Furthermore, the project will consist of a Cultural Market, a multi-functional space for the congregation of students, athletes, artists, religious activists and all others in need of a space to commute, socialize or entertain. This will be complimented with commercial and residential towers, library and public space.
In order to suggest short and long term solutions for the community of Carr Square, the effects must be projected towards the City of St. Louis and closer surrounding areas that might generate movement, community relationship and exacerbate St. Louis’s Culture, fact that has been one of Pruitt-Igoe’s inconveniences as residential complex. But it is still an issue: racial distances and zoning differences still exist in St. Louis. According to 2010 census 95% of blacks is concentrated up north with 5% of whites, latin, hispanic and asian. By this, community engagement should be considered before initializing any complex intervention. The insertion of this Cultural Market will act as an open link between various urban conditions, the immediate context such as Gateway High School, Murray park, churches, firefighters’ station, Carr Square neighborhood and the rest of the community.

In 1962 David Bailey convinced Vogue to send him and Jean Shrimpton to New York. Armed with his 35mm camera and no lighting they took to the streets and shot fashion wherever they wanted free from the constrains of a studio where most fashion shoots were held. I love the atmosphere of the shots and the fact that passers by are sometimes included. Some of the shots have been scanned into this Flickr Set (not by me)...

Today I met up with a Polish model called Malwina and we were inspired to create some similar shots in the streets of Croydon.
The day starts at 7:30 am with a 40-minute drive to the Punta Bandera dock to take a boat on Lago Argentino to Upsala Glacier, a large valley glacier on the eastern side of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Its higher portion lies in a disputed territory between Chile and Argentina. The glacier terminus is at Upsala channel of Lago Argentino. The Upsala Glacier is well known for its rapid retreat that has been ongoing since the glacier was first documented in 1810. The glacier showed almost continual recession up until 1999. The acceleration in ice motion during the two decades preceding 1999 may have been augmented by the release of backstress when the glacier retreated beyond the islands in Brazo Upsala. Another period of even faster retreat started in 2008. As of 2018 Upsala Glacier has retreated to such degree that it no longer constrains its tributary Bertacchi Glacier. The boat then drops us off at the Estancia Cristina, an Argentine cattle and sheep ranch located inside Los Glaciares National Park in Santa Cruz Province. It is here that we take a 4x4 for 45 minutes up a mountain, stop and continue up for another 20 minutes, reaching the summit around 12:30 pm. The ranch was founded in 1914 by Joseph Percival Masters, an Englishman who came to Patagonia with his wife in 1900; Estancia Cristina is named for Masters' daughter Cristina. Located on the coast of Brazo Cristina, a northern channel of Lago Argentino, Estancia Cristina still keeps the history of the Masters family alive. Its lodge has 20 rooms distributed over 5 buildings and it his here that we had lunch followed by a presentation of the traditional Mate, an Argentinean tea and a tour of the ranch. We then take the boat back to Punta Bandera and arrive back at the hotel at 8:00 pm.

Most of the images in this area date from 2000 B.C. to about 1300 A.D., though some may be much older. The inclusion of the bow and arrow constrains the date of these images to some time after 200 A.D. Notice that the hunter is wearing a headdress of sheep horns. There is archeological evidence suggesting that they wore such horns during the hunt as a technique for attracting their quarry, perhaps by hiding behind rocks with only their headwear visible. Rocketing off into the night sky, this rocket explored out beyond the outer radiation belt while also constraining the size of both belts on the night side of Kerbin. It also set a new height record of 4,349.35km
Got tired of the old one (with a diagonal slash separating the two faces and constraining the space significantly), so I put up an ad hoc green-screen photo booth, took a few face-shots, took a nice background picture looking down at PIER from a height, got out photoshop, and here we are!
(And in fact you can still see a bit of the greenscreen coloration in some of the wisps of her hair; I'm not that good at photoshop yet.)
It's true that girl Dale is usually somewhat paler than in this picture *8) but I really like this skin, and I happened to have it on at the time.
Alright, so I lied. I only had builder's block instead of just completely loosing interest. Anyway, this is my interpretation of a futuristic Krinn. This is also a chroma key test. Not sure how well it turned out but I think it's a good first try. I don't think I will be doing any castle soon. I think I kinda burned out by constraining myself to it.

The radio opens with four screws. The power pack (eight AA batteries) is contained in the back half of the shell, and the electronics are all on the front half. And (GASP!) they used a connector so the two can be separated! These guys are swiftly becoming my heroes.
The internal layout is very clean, and the wiring runs are pretty neat compared to my aging AM radio. They did a neat job.
The main board comes out after removing a single screw. I didn't photograph it, but judging from the silkscreen on the front side of the board, the same board is used for a number of radios. If it's any indicator, the push button for binding the transmitter to a receiver is actually a five-way joystick switch. The case constrains it to only be used as a push button.
