The marker at the site says: "On this spot, beneath the shade of the elm, the Constitution of Indiana was framed in June 1816. This tree lived until 1925, attaining a height of fifty feet, a trunk diameter of five feet and a spread of one hundred and thirty-two feet. This monument was erected in 1936."

Every January 1st I lead a birding trip for the Montgomery Bird Club into the normally touristy heart of Washington DC's monument areas. Early in the morning there are few people, and the pond often has multiple species of waterfowl scattered around. Beyond the ubiquitous Canada Geese and out of sight in this photo are Ring-necked Ducks, Bufflehead, Gadwall, Mallards, and a pair of American Wigeon. New Year's Day, 2016.

Old Ironsides is one of America’s most famous war ships. The boat was built in 1797, and has seen many battles. It is now a museum, but is able to sail on its own, and does for special events.
