On Epsom Common this is The Stew Pond and The Great Pond is located not far away on the right . You may come across a stew pond elsewhere , they were an early form of fish farming carried out by monks for food back in medieval times .
It is not widely known that the first fish farmers in Britain were monks. It is easy to see why. Their diet involved eating fish on fast days, which included all of Lent and several other days a year. This was fine if they dwelled near the sea, but if you lived inland you only had rivers, and other people wanted their share of the fishing. But monasteries had land, and so many of them developed their own fish farms for freshwater fish.
Monks ate carp, which can grow big and fat, so could feed many monks. Carp have the advantage of being the aquatic equivalent of pigs, as they are omnivores and therefore eat anything, including scraps, and unlike pigs are not likely to bite human; and they do not smell or make those who work with them smell as well. This made them ideal for monks who want to be clean for their regular prayer duties.
The technique was simple. The monks dug two large ponds about four feet deep and ensured that there was a ramp going down into each. One of them was filled with water and stocked with carp, which were allowed to feed happily there. The second was left empty, and cattle taken down the ramp and allowed to graze in it. The method behind this was that the cattle would manure the ground and enrich it. Next year the first pond was drained, Enough fish were taken from the pond to feed the monks. but a breeding stock was kept, and the second filled, with the surviving fish transferred there. Here is where the manure mattered. It fostered the growth of pond weed, on which pond life could flourish. The carp would eat the pond life, along with any feed the monks put into the pond. The cycle would be repeated every year.
Here is where the third pond comes into play. This was known as the stew pond, and it was deliberately kept as clean as possible and not manured. This is where the fish were kept prior to eating. The reason for this is that carp can take on a muddy taste if they are kept in muddy water, so to purify the flesh of the muddy taste they were kept in clean water for a week or two. During this time they would only feed on insects that came to the surface of the water.
The monstrous act of vandalism that we miscall the English Reformation drove the monks from their homes and ended much of the good that they did. Fish farms were part of the loss. You can occasionally see the sedimented up remnants of monastic ponds in some of the estates that were stolen from the monks. They are small depressions in the ground prone to weediness and flooding when it rains, always near old monastic sites.
The known history of the Common stretches back to the Saxon era. At that time, it covered a far greater area as it included what is now known as Epsom Downs. Epsom was under the control of a 'Lord Of The Manor' who only used the land for timber, hunting and fishing, as the land was deemed unfit for cultivation due to it being situated on a 200 feet thick bed of clay - this resulted in water logging during winter and dried-out conditions in the summer. The Commoners were allowed to collect firewood and graze their animals, mainly cattle and pigs. Whilst under the ownership of the Abbey of Chertsey, monks in the 12th century created the Great Pond, stocking it with fish to provide food for the winter.
During 1618, a spring was discovered on the Common whose water contained magnesium sulphate - an aid for constipation - and so, for the next 100 years, Epsom was regarded as a Spa Town. Only a wishing well, located in the middle of the Wells housing estate, remains on the site of the spring and is a reminder of Epsom's most famous product, 'Epsom Salts'. (For a cautionary tale, see 'Fatal Reaction - Misadventure with Epsom Salts').
At the end of the eighteenth century, the area around Epsom Downs became dedicated to horse racing and by the middle of the next century was no longer regarded as part of the Common.
I just can't pass one!
Back in my room. Red wine consumed. Started pulling silly poses in to the mirror. Not great photos but some funny expressions!

On Saturday, I accompanied my oldest son for some information gathering and window shopping in the city's different bike shops. It was fun. We looked at both used and new. He's interested in participating in a triathlon later this year and needs to get a road bike to train on (he also wants to start riding to school, which I'm not crazy about because we live in a tricky part of the city with traffic and hills). So I guess you could say that's what influenced the sharing of this picture, which I made in Amsterdam last summer.
There are a lot of bikes in Amsterdam! I consider myself a savvy person when it comes to blending but I still had a handful of people tut-tutting at me the night I took this, I kept accidentally walking into bike paths. I found Amsterdam exhilarating but chaotic. I'd dearly like to go back and visit the city, just by itself. We were barely there. It was more of a layover, between Berlin and the UK.
For the chance to walk around and take pictures, I skipped dinner with my family and had nothing to eat later except for some nuts, adding to an epic case of travel-related constipation I'd acquired due to eating like a bird the day before (it was going to be a long train ride, the lavatories on trains are infinitely better than on airplanes but I still just wanted to stay in my seat as much as possible). Later, I was too tired from walking around to go out and find something proper to eat and we had to get up early the next morning and catch another train so I went to sleep with a growly stomach. Surprisingly, these couple of days were the only time during our entire visit to Europe that I had that sort of "problem". As such, Amsterdam stands out in my mind, haha!
Queen of Spain Fritillary Distinctive Upperside (Issoria lathonia female; dostojka latonia, perlowiec mniejszy z rodziny rusalkowatych). The strong flyer, widespread butterfly in most of Europe lives in hot, dusty paths, sandy wasteland, and agricultural wastelands in extensive crops of the valley of the Warta River (Sierakow-Piaski). The white mustard herbaceous plant is native to Europe and bears yellow flower heads. It can be used internally, popular for treatment of constipation, indigestion, and gastrointestinal diseases (anti-inflammatory, coating, laxative, and digestive-stimulating effects).
Probably one of the most photographed exhibits at the Kelvingrove museum in Glasgow.. The heads are meant to depict four diferent facial expressions . My day of culture was ruined when I described one of the heads as "constipation"
Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium).
From Wikipedia:
"a species of flowering plant in the Lamiaceae family, or mint family, native to Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Crushed pennyroyal leaves emits a very strong fragrance similar to spearmint. Pennyroyal is a traditional folk remedy, emmenagogue, abortifacient, and culinary herb. European pennyroyal is related to an American species, Hedeoma pulegioides. Though they differ in genera, they share similar chemical properties.
Documented use of pennyroyal dates back to ancient Greek, Roman, and Medieval cultures. Its name - although of uncertain etymology - is associated with Latin "pulex" (flea) alluding to the manner it was used to drive away fleas when smeared on the body. Pennyroyal was commonly incorporated as a cooking herb by the Greeks and Romans. A large number of the recipes in the Roman cookbook of Apicius called for the use of pennyroyal, often along with such herbs as lovage, oregano and coriander. Although it was commonly used for cooking also in the Middle Ages, it gradually fell out of use as a culinary herb and is seldom used as such today.
Records from Greek and Roman physicians and scholars contain information pertaining to pennyroyal’s medicinal properties, as well as recipes used to prepared it. Pliny the Elder, in his encyclopedia Naturalis Historia (Natural History), described the plant as an emmenagogue, and that it also expelled a dead fetus. Galen only listed pennyroyal as an emmenagogue, as did Oribasius. Roman and Greek writers Quintus Serenus Sammonicus and Aspasia however both agreed that pennyroyal, when served in tepid water, was an effective abortive method. A medical text on gynecology attributed to Cleopatra (though it was never written by her but by a female Greek physician Metrodora) recommends the use of pennyroyal with wine to induce abortions.
In regard to its contraceptive properties, it was referred to in a joking manner in Aristophanes' play “Peace” 421 B.C.. Hermes provides the male character Trygaios a female companion. When Trygaios asks if there would be a problem if she became pregnant, Hermes responds, “Not if you add a dose of pennyroyal.” In a similar manner, in Aristophanes' comedy “Lysistrata,” after a pregnant female character on stage is told to withhold her body sexually from her husband, a slender female character, in comparison to the pregnant woman, is described as “A very lovely land Well croppy, and trimmed and spruced with pennyroyal.”
Early settlers in colonial Virginia used dried pennyroyal to eradicate pests. Pennyroyal was such a popular herb that the Royal Society published an article on its use against rattlesnakes in the first volume of its Philosophical Transactions in 1665. 17th century apothecary and physician Nicholas Culpeper wrote his medical text The English Physitian, mentioning pennyroyal, published in 1652. In addition to its abortive properties, Culpeper recommends its use for other gastrointestinal ailments, such as constipation, hemorrhoids, as well as itching and blemishes to the skin, even toothaches.
Pennyroyal continued to be used up through the 20th and 21st centuries. Its oil is still commercially available today, though little is known about the appropriate dosages for humans. Scientists therefore consider it likely unsafe for use, as it is potentially toxic. Pennyroyal is frequently used as an insecticide and pest repellant.[15] As a pest repellant, it is used to keep fleas away from household animals as well as on humans to ward off gnats and mosquitos. Some flea collars for pets have pennyroyal oil or the herb can be crushed in the lining. Humans have also put crushed pennyroyal stems in their pockets or on their clothing to ward off unwanted insects.[16] However, when using the pennyroyal plant as a pest repellant, the use of the concentrated pennyroyal oil should be avoided. Pennyroyal oil can be extremely toxic to both humans and animals, even in small quantities. With the use of pennyroyal around animals and humans comes the risk of it being absorbed through the skin and causing negative health effects. The less concentrated leaves of the plant should be used instead as an insect repellant.
Pennyroyal has historically also been used as a mint flavoring in herbal teas and foods. Pennyroyal tea has been used for cold relief, fevers, coughs, indigestion, liver and kidney problems and headaches.[17] The fresh or dried leaves of pennyroyal have also been used when treating influenza, abdominal cramps, to induce sweating, as well as in the treatment of diseases such as smallpox and tuberculosis.[18] To make the tea, the leaves of the plant are boiled in hot water. The lower concentration of toxic chemicals in these teas are less harmful than pennyroyal oil. It is recommended that people only drink pennyroyal tea periodically, as it is taxing on the body and should not be drunk on a regular basis. Consumption of pennyroyal tea can be fatal to infants and children.
The pennyroyal plant has also been used as an emmenagogue or perhaps most famously as an abortifacient. Chemicals in the pennyroyal plant cause the uterine lining to contract, causing a woman's uterine lining to shed. Women who struggle with regulating their menstrual cycle or suffer from a cystic ovary syndrome may choose to drink pennyroyal tea. Pennyroyal tea is subtle enough to induce menstrual flow with minimal risk of negative health effects. More concentrated versions of the plant, such as the oil, are much more toxic and will likely force a miscarriage if ingested by a pregnant woman. Since the U.S. Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act in October 1994 all manufactured forms of pennyroyal in the United States have carried a warning label against its use by pregnant women, but pennyroyal is not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration."

The pills were first manufactured in 1868 when Dr Samuel Carter of Erie, Pennsylvania devised a formula that he thought was 'good for sick headache, torpid liver, indigestion, constipation or what-ails-you'. The formula included podophyllum resin from dried mandrake root combined with dried aloes juice, and bisacodyl as the active ingredient. The pills claimed to cure 'headache, biliousness, constipation, etc.' and are 'strictly vegetable'.

Identification on the verso as Caroline Hindman.
Caroline Hindman was born circa 1846. She passed away in Matton, Illinois in 1869.
Photographer Walter Kilner was born circa 1847 in New York, the son of Doctor George Kilner. He began his photography career circa 1863, when he paid for a Class B license in Mattoon. In April 1864, he was advertising his location in newspapers as "In Car, southeast corner Broadway and 1st Streets." That same newspaper had an ad for his father, George Kilner, as physician and "Oculist and Aurist". Walter later gave up photography and became a druggist in Mattoon. In 1892, he was advertising "cupidene", a restorer of manhood. "This great Vegetable Vitalizer, the prescription of a famous French physician, will quickly cure you of all Pains in the Back, Seminal Emissions, Nervous Debility, Pimples, Unfitness to Marry, Exhausting Drains, Varicocele and Constipation. It stops all losses by day or night. Prevents quickness of discharge, which if not checked leads to Spermatorrhoea and all the horrors of impotency. Cupidene cleanses the liver, the kidneys and the urinary organs of all impurities. Cupidene strengthens and restores small weak organs." It appears that he may have relocated to Springfield, Illinois. Walter Kilner passed away circa 1914.

I've blended ginger, black pepper and an array of citrus essential oils including orange, lemon, lime and grapefruit to make up this essential oil delight. Those burgundy stripes you see are musk fragrance oil. The scent is wonderful together!
Here's a couple of things these essential oils have been said to help with:
Ginger oil is used in the treatment of fractures, rheumatism, arthritis, bruising, carbuncles, nausea, hangovers, travel and sea sickness, colds and flu, catarrh, congestion, coughs, sinusitis, sores on the skin, sore throat, diarrhea, colic, cramps, chills and fever.

Jus to check this out.......
The Organs of your body have their sensory touches at the bottom of your
foot, if you massage these points you will find relief from aches and pains
as you can see the heart is on the left foot.
Typically they are shown as points and arrows to show which organ it
connects to.
It is indeed correct since the nerves connected to these organs terminate
here.
This is covered in great details in Acupressure studies or textbooks.
God created our body so well that he thought of even this. He made us walk
so that we will always be pressing these pressure points and thus keeping
these organs activated at all times.
So, keep walking...

...* DRINK WATER ON EMPTY STOMACH*
It is popular in Japan today to drink water immediately after waking up
every morning. Furthermore, scientific tests have proven a its value. We
publish below a description of use of water for our readers. For old and
serious diseases as well as modern illnesses the water treatment had been
found successful by a Japanese med ical society as a 100% cure for the
following diseases:
Headache, body ache, heart system, arthritis, fast heart beat, epilepsy,
excess fatness, bronchitis asthma, TB, meningitis, kidney and urine
diseases, vomiting, ga str itis, diarrhea, piles, diabetes, constipation,
all eye diseases, womb, cancer and ear nose and throat diseases. *
METHOD OF TREATMENT*
1. As you wake up in the morning *before brushing teeth*, drink 4 x 160ml
glasses of water .....interesting
2. Brush and clean the mouth but do not eat or drink anything for 45 minutes
3. After 45 minutes you may eat and drink as normal.
4. After 15 minutes of breakfast, lunch and dinner do not eat or drink
anything for 2 hours
5. Those who are old or sick and are unable to drink 4 glasses of water at
the beginning may commence by taking little water and gradually increase it
to 4 glasses per day.
6. The above method of treatment will cure diseases of the sick and others
can enjoy a healthy life.
The following list gives the number of days of treatment required to
cure/control/reduce main diseases:
1. High Blood Pressure - 30 days
2. Ga str ic - 10 days
3. Diabetes - 30 days
4. Constipation - 10 days
5. Cancer - 180 days
6. TB - 90 days
7. Arthritis patients should follow the above treatment only for 3 days in
the 1st week, and from 2nd week onwa rd s - daily.
This treatment method has no side effects, however at the commencement of
treatment you may have to urinate a few times.
It is better if we continue this and make this procedure as a routine work
in our life.
Drink Water and Stay healthy and Active.
This makes sense .. The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals
..not cold water. Maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while
eating!!! Nothing to lose, everything to gain...
For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.
It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water
will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed . It will slow down
the digestion.
Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed
by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine.
Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink
hot soup or warm water after a meal.
*
A serious note about heart attacks*: Women should know that not every heart
attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting.
Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.
You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart
attack..
Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.
60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up.
Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be
aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive...
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it to everyone they
know, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life.

(Ever notice that Curio likes to stick his paw in the face of anyone wearing an e-collar?)
A quick note about Gumbo. As you notice, he is now in an e-collar. Why? He had an anal abscess rupture. That was a bit messy on the bed. He went on antibiotics right away, but Gumbo won't leave the area alone. He kept nearly a dime-sized opening there through his licking and licking and licking. Now that I have him in the e-collar, the area has closed. It needs some time to heal.
Apparently the supplements added to the BaRF diet (Wild Artic Salmon Oil, Organic Safflower Oil, Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Alfalfa Powder, Organic Kelp, Organic Dulse Flakes, Organic Psyllium Husk, Organic Turmeric Powder, Vitamin-Mineral Mix w/ Tuarine) aren't enough to prevent constipation in Gumbo. He'll get extra stuff added now to make sure he's regular.
Here's a question for those of you who have known Gumbo for quite a long while. Can you figure out what is wrong with putting an e-collar on him? I'm actually in a bit of a dilemma, sigh. If cats are like humans, it takes 48 hours to form a bond across the surface of the wound (not necessarily strong, but at least it is something), so hopefully I'll soon be able to get the collar off him and keep the wound closed in spite of his rough tongue. I need to get it off him soon but not too soon. . .

A wild riot of colour as thousands celebrate London's Gay Pride Parade 2011. London 02.07.2011
This Saturday July 2nd 2011 saw the explosion of colour and fabulous carnival/cabaret fancy-dress which is the annual Gay Pride parade passing through the packed London streets as many Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender groups representing special interest campaigning groups, trade unions, the armed forces, police service, christian groups and several of London's gay bars and clubs celebrated their sexuality and diversity, watched and cheered on by tens of thousands of enthusiastic members of the public.
The days celebrations were purposefully snubbed by London mayor Boris Johnson much to the anger and irritation of many, since Mr. Johnson is expected to show support for all Londoners. However, his greatest opponent in the upcoming mayoral elections, former London Mayor Ken Livingstone was to be seen - as always - at the head of the parade, accompanied by human and gay rights activist Peter Tatchell.
Gone was the nervous tension of the original trail-blazing Gay Pride marches of the late 1970's and early 80's, as a new generation of gay people enjoy far greater public acceptance of their lifestyle in what feel like more enlightened times. What is taken for granted now was fought for in the past by courageous activists and their political supporters who wanted to see an end to the homophobic bigotry and institutionalised discrimination which used to be the universal public position towards them.
Having said that, there was a demonstration set up at the bottom of Waterloo Place by a group of so-called Christians from the Baptist Church - some of whom looked like they had been time-warped directly from the 1950's, complete with emotional constipation - who spent the entire afternoon insulting and demeaning all gay people and anyone who accepts homosexuality as a part of the enormously wide spectrum of human sexuality by cherry-picking snippets from the Bible completely without proper context, and generally showing themselves up to be nothing more than a bunch of hate-filled bigots who hilariously claim to love the people they were standing there belittling.
My photos of the Baptists and the crowd's reactions to being assaulted by the pious abuse are already uploaded in my set "Baptists preach intolerance at Gay Pride Parade".
After the parade made its way from Portland Place to Trafalgar Square, the marchers and bystanders alike dispersed into Soho for some serious street partying which lasted late into the night. There was a main stage in Trafalgar Square which hosted a long rosta of minor-league pop and dance acts during the afternoon, though oddly this year there were no big-name headliners, and another Dance Stage in Soho Square which featured a great line-up of club DJs.

Other Uses
Dandelions can be beneficial to a garden ecosystem as well as to human health.
When placed in a paper bag with unripe fruit, the flowers and leaves of Dandelion release ethylene gas ripening the fruit quickly. A liquid plant food is made from the root and leaves. A dark red dye is obtained from Dandelion root. A cosmetic skin lotion made from the appendages at the base of the leaf blades distilled in water, is used to clear the skin and is effective in fading freckles.
Dandelion Habitat and Description
Dandelion is a perennial herb thought to be introduced from Europe and Asia. It is now naturalized throughout the Northern Hemisphere. No one is sure exactly how the dandelion has spread so widely, and there is some debate on the origin of the plant.
Dandelion is found growing in pastures, lawns, waste ground, sand, rocks, even cracks in concrete. From a thick, long, tap root, dark brown outside, white and milky white inside, grow long jaggedly toothed leaves, shiny, dark to light green and growing in the shape of a rosette close to the ground. A purplish flower-stalks rise straight from the center, it is leafless, smooth, hollow and bears a single bright golden yellow, furry looking flower which blooms almost anytime of the year. When mature the seed in the flowers heads are round and fuzzy, carried by the wind to be germinated where ever they land.
How to Grow Dandelion
Dandelion is a very easily grown plant, it succeeds in most soils. It becomes quite large when cultivation, the leaves reaching a foot or more in length. Dandelion is often cultivated as an edible salad crop and as a medicinal herb plant.
History and Folklore
In Derbyshire, the juice of the Dandelion stalk is applied to remove warts.

Common chicory (Cichorium intybus), is a bushy perennial herbaceous plant with blue, lavender, or occasionally white flowers. Various varieties are cultivated for salad leaves, chicons (blanched buds), or for roots (var. sativum), which are baked, ground, and used as a coffee substitute and additive. It is also grown as a forage crop for livestock. It lives as a wild plant on roadsides in its native Europe, and in North America and Australia, where it has become naturalized.
Chicory (especially the flower) was used as a treatment in Germany, and is recorded in many books as an ancient German treatment for everyday ailments. It is variously used as a tonic and as a treatment for gallstones, gastro-enteritis, sinus problems and cuts and bruises. (Howard M. 1987). Chicory contains inulin, which may help humans with weight loss, constipation, improving bowel function, and general health. In rats, it may increase calcium absorption and bone mineral density.

Surya Chikitsa or Color Therapy is a drugless method of treating the diseases by using different colors from sunlight. The rays of the sun contain all the essential elements needed to reestablish and maintain the health of the human body. Sun rays are made-up of seven colors – (1) Red (2) Yellow (3) Orange (4) Green (5) Blue (6) Indigo (7) Violet.
These colors can be seen in rainbow. These seven colors have different qualities. In the other words there are only 7 medicines for all the bodily ailments. The law of nature is that where there is light, there is energy and there is life. There is coolness, heat and weight in colors. Place a thermometer in a glass of water and throw rays over it. Red rays will show heat and blue rays will show coolness. This proves the above fact.
The history of color therapy is very ancient. Indian Vedic scriptures have mentioned the significance of these colors. This system was first practiced in India by Indian Rishis (Indian Saints). Then slowly this knowledge reached to China, Egypt, Greece and spread throughout the world. According to the basic principles of Surya Chikitsa or Color Therapy, human body is composed of different colors and lack of any color in our body gives rise to disease. A man is said to be in a state of health as long as the colors of the spectrum are in a harmonious state in his body. The body parts, which are visible, have different colors and so have the internal organs. The brain, eyes, lungs, heart, liver, intestines, kidney, bones, blood have different colors. When closely examined, even the smallest cell of the body is found colored.
During the state of disease, there is a disturbance in the balance of colors in the human body. When a disorder arises, besides its chemical balance, its color balance too is affected. Surya Chikitsa or color therapy restores the chemical and color balance of the body and cures the disease. Color therapy removes the foreign matter from the system that causes disease. It removes the disorder from the root cause and permanently suppress the disease.
This is a universally accepted fact that development of all living forms of life depends mainly on solar energy. Today solar cells can produce electricity and can run cars, trains etc. When the sun is the life force of all living things, the efficacy of colors, which are emitted from the sun rays, can hardly be doubted. An experienced naturopath can use seven colors for curing different ailments, but for the ordinary person, following four groups will be helpful for treatment:-

You can find all the websites you want (and one is more than a buttload, if you ask me) "debunking the myth" that Sir Thomas Crapper invented the modern flush toilet. While I can't seriously object to their airing out the dirty linen of politicians and generals, who, more often than not, fouled their britches sure as sh*t, when they feel the need to leave their racing stripes on popular history by trying to wipe away the large--one is tempted to say, "commodious"--place this gentleman deserves in our hearts (not to mention other portions of our anatomy), well, that's right up there with going commando for chapping my posterior.
These outhouse philosophers argue that flush toilets had been designed and in some cases patented decades or even centuries before Thomas Crapper did his business, and that he was simply a sanitary engineer who had a successful plumbing business in London, and that he purchased the rights to a "valveless water waste preventer" (as it was called in the language of his times, which was every bit as flowery as today's aerosol air fresheners), the component that enabled the toilet to flush effectively, which was invented by either an employee named Albert Gilpin or his own nephew, George Crapper (for some reason, while they can tell us in no uncertain terms that OUR story is a crock of crap, the "myth-busters" can't be quite so positive about which one of THEIR stories is the straight poop). In other words, he didn't invent the flush toilet, he merely built one with the essential component that made it a working proposition, merely went on to manufacture, sell and install them in such quantities that they became not a luxury but an absolute necessity in the home of everyone who would count himself a member of Christian Civilization, and he was merely so successful in this venture that his name and the device became as one. And, because that's merely all he did, and since some other Englishman had built Elizabeth I an indoor biffie a couple of centuries before and because in his sketches Leonardo may have had Mona Lisa or one of those naked guys he liked to draw sitting on one, then Thomas Crapper should be flushed and forgotten.
Not to say they're full of it, but I believe it tells us something about their mental constipation that these dung beetles can't even agree on which "myth" regarding Crapper's eponymity they want to debunk. Some say his name became the noun due to the large number of American soldiers in England during WW I, many of them unfamiliar with indoor plumbing, who saw the name on the tanks in the "water closets", and just thought "Crapper" must be the English word for them. Others say it was the large number of American soldiers in England during WW II who saw the name on the tanks and, being American GI's, were soon making cracks about going to "the crapper".
I tend toward the WW I argument myself. The WW II theory sounds plausible, because there WERE a lot of American soldiers in England during WW II, the Germans having overrun all of France, forcing us to stop in England and build up for the invasion before going Over There again. On the other hand, there weren't that many American soldiers in England during WW I because that time around, their left wing having collided with The Taxis of the Marne on the road to Paris, their right wing having run into "that contemptible little army" at Wipers* and, as a result, their Schlieffen Plan having turned into Schiesse, the Heinies decided to dig a 500-mile slit trench and squat, so, when Wilson finally got off the pot and let Johnny get his gun, the AEF could book direct passage New York to Saint-Nazaire.
Still, WW I sounds more plausible. For one thing, there were SOME American servicemen in England during WW I, either in our own armed forces as liaison personnel, embassy attaches, or passing through for training, or those who had volunteered for the British Army and Royal Flying Corps in the days before Wilson decided he wasn't too proud to fight (or, at least, decided he wasn't too proud to let Black Jack, Captain Eddie and Sergeant York fight). There were also a goodly number of trans-Atlantic business men, diplomatic personnel, journalists and the like, not only during the war, but in the years before and after as well. And, let's face it, it just doesn't take all that many Americans to come up with those kind of jokes--if two or more were gathered in the presence of THAT name, whether they were familiar with indoor plumbing or not, it would have been downright un-American for some kind of off-color humor NOT to have come out of it. Further, and perhaps most telling of all, the first known reference in American literature to "a crapper", as we understand the term, was in the early nineteen-thirties, which, in case the revisionists missed it, is AFTER WW I, but BEFORE WW II.
Which is exactly the point: can we really learn anything about lavatory history from people who demonstrably don't know the difference between Number 1 and Number 2?
Additional evidence of their desperate need for some intellectual Ex-Lax is the fact that the myth-busters are, by their own admission, perplexed that Thomas Crapper is sometimes "inexplicably" misidentified as "John Crapper", or "Sir John Crapper".
"Inexplicably"...? Really...? Are you sh*tting me...?!!
One of the volumes in my personal library, treasured since childhood, actually belonged to an uncle, who received it as a Christmas present in the early nineteen-sixties, and, knowing how much I loved it, passed it on to me. A collection of men's room jokes (tame by today's standards, but quite the blue humor knee-slappers back there on the old New Frontier), with a hole bored in the upper left hand corner so that it might hang on the pull chain, and with a cartoon drawing on the cover depicting an Indian fakir about to sit on a commode seat of nails, the title is: "Jokes for the John". Now, granted, not everyone had the educational benefits I enjoyed as a child, but still, even if the old definition "Piled higher and Deeper" is never more applicable than when referring to an Ivy League PhD, I would think even someone from Harvard or Yale would not need to strain his or her mental sphincter over how the popcorn fart of JOHN Crapper got cut loose in the hurricane of History.
Whether it's affixed to John or Thomas, the "Sir" part really seems to get the Don't-Know-Their-Heads-From-Shinola crowd's bowels in an uproar. They're quicker than the Tiajuana Two-Step when it comes to pointing out that Thomas Crapper was a man of humble origins and never knighted. This, of course, is their way of taking a dump on both Thomas Crapper and us, for mistakenly referring to him by the title. Personally, I believe the only thing this proves is that with all those knobs and points and jewels sticking out all over them, it must have been a Royal Pain for Victoria and Edward to have had their crowned heads stuck up there like that, and that any of their annual honors lists that didn't include the name of Thomas Crapper are fit only for use as a scratchier, less absorbent and altogether unsatisfactory emergency substitute when all that's left of your last roll of Charmin Ultra-Soft is that empty cardboard cylinder hanging forlornly on the spindle. And, truly, that it proves the Glory of our shared Anglo-American heritage of democracy--that this is an instance where it doesn't take some fancy doin's with all their nibs at Buckingham Palace to get the job done, that the most humble commoner who has ever had a moving experience whilst sitting on the throne can and should--and, as the "myth" attests, does--afford him the honorific.
So, with regard to the revisionist myth-busters, one is tempted to quote one of the inimitable Rowan Atkinson's most memorable lines, "I wouldn't trust the bloody lot of you to know the right way to sit on a toilet seat!" (and, temptation proving too much, as one knew it would, one just did). As for Thomas Crapper, if he didn't technically "invent" the modern flush toilet, he is, more so than any other in my estimation, responsible for its having come to be counted with the Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights, the Habeas Corpus, trial by jury, the English common law and the American Declaration of Independence in what Churchill has called "the joint inheritance of the English-speaking world". Indeed, along with those and Our Glorious English Language itself, it is one of the essential elements that make the English-speaking world worth inheriting. And, if he can hear me up there in that Big Water Closet in the Sky, to Thomas Crapper I will say, "Thank you, sir, and God bless you, sir, and you will always be SIR Thomas to me!"
Finally, I realize this post is a few days early, but I know you hate last-minute shopping as much as I do, and I wanted to get this out as a reminder while you still have plenty of time to get to the toilet paper-and-air freshener aisle at the supermarket, or visit your local plumbing supply store, to find That Special Something for That Special Someone.
*Wipers: the correct spelling, and the as-close-to-correct-as-anybody-but-a-Frenchman-can-get pronunciation, is "Ypres"/"Ee-preh", but surely you didn't think that I, of all people--and certainly not HERE of all places--was going to pass up the chance to use Tommy Atkins' own scatological Anglicization of it, now did you?
You all know how much I love my dog Spot. He's our baby... Scott got him when he was a puppy and has been through all our highs and lows. When Spot came into my life, he was a youngster, a "crazy boy" who wasn't even trained to walk on a leash. I remember when he first moved to L.A., I couldn't get him from my car to the front door without a leash on him. I was impressed with myself when I was finally able to trust him and walk him on trails off leash. I was proud of him and myself whenever anyone would comment about how good he is. He always stayed close, always listened, always courteous to other dogs and people, and most of all, safe because I always kept an eye on him. He's a smart boy, expressive with his eyes and responsive to my voice, whistles and commands. Friends have asked us to please please get him cloned. LOL! We would if we could afford it :)
Fast forward a few years, and now he's 13. But honestly, he could be older... Scott isn't really sure what year he got him in, so he could easily be 14 going on 15. If I go back to my Flickr photos, I can see him age, and because I'm perceptive, I noted a few things about him that make sense now, but didn't back then. Because he's my first dog I just thought, "Well, he's getting old..." and shrugged it off as something that old dogs do. However, Spot has been showing signs of cognitive dysfunction... doggy Dementia for some time now, something a little more serious than "just getting old". It's something I never knew happened to dogs. I thought, arthritis, diabetes, and cancer... but Dementia?
Because I spend a tremendous amount of time with him, the first change I noticed in him was back in Feb of this year, when he would rebel against having to leave a trail. It was kind of funny at first, but when you have to go to work and can't spend another hour there, it can be a little frustrating.
In May, he exhibited another odd behavior...he stopped wanting to hang out with us. I remember when we took Wally to that dog beach, that was the first time Spot didn't want to spend his day with us. I even noted how strange I thought it was that he wouldn't get in the car, when getting in the car meant going somewhere fun.
Then came the panting and anxious behavior, then the "I don't hear you".... So no, he's not deaf like I mentioned in an earlier post, it's just one of the signs of dementia in dogs.
Then the most painful one, besides him not wanting to have anything to do with us, sometimes he looks at me as if he forgets who I am. When we come across another pack, he'll go with the other pack and the human has to stop him and redirect him over to me.
And last but not least, he started waking us up from 1 a.m. to 3a.m., in the morning with the pacing and the panting. If I put him outside, he wants in, then once he's in he wants out again.
This week has been very difficult, starting Tuesday when he wandered away from our yard and went inside someone's house. He was chillin' in the living room with the kids who were playing there. (!!!) My neighbor brought him back and left a note saying how Spot went inside her house and how it scared her and made her laugh all at the same time. She finished off the note by saying that he "listens well" and followed her back home. That last tidbit of information made me go, "hmm...I thought he was deaf!!" and "what the hell, he NEVER leaves the yard!! " that was when I started doing my research on Dementia, or CD (cognitive dysfunction).
All the signs by themselves are easily over looked, but when they're exhibited ALL at once like he did this last week, it was certainly enough to cause great concert and act quickly. His off- leash days are sadly over. Other things he's done this week that he's NEVER done before? Jump on the couch, something I trained him not to do 7 years ago. Also, he chewed the screen off my no longer screened door. :-/
On Friday, Spot saw a new vet and he put him on a medication that we had done our research on. I was glad he suggested it as dogs do show positive improvement. We'll be starting him on that medication as soon as it arrives.(Deprenyl, a medication for Parkinson's Disease)
We're changing his dry food too, something his vet suggested and I completely agree with. It's a prescription food that was developed around the time Ronald Reagan's nutritionists were developing a diet to help him with his Alzheimer's Disease. When I pick up that food on Monday, will let you guys know what it is.
Aside from the medication and food, we already started him on glucosamine for his hips and joints, something we should have started him on years ago, but I believe you're never too old to start supplements. He doesn't mind the bacon flavored tablets either :)
A tablespoon of fish oil is added to his dinner. I figure it's good for us, it can't hurt him. He's also going to get B12 shots, as soon as I can get Scott to order them! (grr!)
I'm also upping his exercise. I admit I got lazy on him because he takes so long to get through his walk, but like I said before, now that I know what his issues are and now that I know how to get his focus and attention, I'm going to make the effort to get up super early so I can devote a few hours to his exercise daily, try to get him excited enough to run a little. Blood flow to the brain is essential for older dogs and not to mention, good for us too. :)
Last but not least, a little physical therapy - doggy massages... I figure massages aren't only relaxing, they help move toxins out the body. Today I gave him a 30 minute massage and he LOVED it. It was a great way to spend quality time with him and to help build that bond I feel I've been losing with him. I'm hoping that everything combined will improve his situation. We'll know if he does, and if he continues to worsen, we may have to make some difficult decisions. I'm optimistic though, and I will continue to post updates on his condition. One thing I didn't find on line were stories from people who were going through this with their dogs. Many stories complaining about symptoms, but nothing else. If anything, I hope writing about it will bring awareness to a commonly overlooked condition until it's too late, a lot of times not doing anything until the dog becomes incontinent. Sometimes, by then it's too late... I wish someone had told me about all this, I would have done something about his condition earlier if I would have known what to look for.
Oh, and if you know Robert you know he KNOWS dogs. I'm impressed with how his dogs, even in their elder ages of 14, 15 and 16, look happy and healthy. He has his older dogs on Cholodin, a natural supplement for elderly dogs and from what his dogs look like, Cholodin is a good thing. Robert I know you're reading this, I forgot to ask his vet if I can give him Cholodin with the Deprenyl. If he gives me the green light, I'll start him on that too.
What is Cholodin?
Cholodin is a chewable dietary supplement that helps remedy various conditions in senior dogs. It has been recommended by veterinarians for age-related problems, including fatigue, poor coat, constipation, inappropriate urination, poor appetite, and poor mental performance.

The Tamil Siddhars call the plant koovilam (கூவிளம்) and use the fragrant leaves for medicinal purposes, including dyspepsia and sinusitis. A confection called ilakam (இளகம்) is made of the fruit and used to treat tuberculosis and loss of appetite. It is used in Ayurveda for many purposes, especially chronic constipation.
For some unexplained reason Pethidine can't be gotten anywhere here . Whether it's a manufacturing or supply problem . No one can tell me . Just we can't get them . here's some morphine . Been on pethidine for about 20 years now and for some reason it still works . Has no side effects really for me . Apart from kebab craving . I don't get withdrawals . Yet the morphine screws up my stomach . Feel like i have swallowed a very angry hedgehog . Terrible acid and it does nothing for my pain .
I really fucking hate morphine .
Oh yeah . And another thing . It kills whatever little libido i had left .
And gives you excruciating constipation as well .
Secretos de Radiación. Secrets of Radiation. It is the project that I intend to reflect the physical and mental deterioration suffered by women who have received radiation from cervical cancer and the deterioration due to side effects to the treatment, which saves their lives but leaves a great imprint on their body and mind . This internal wilting causes a great variety of problems such as: dryness, sensitive skin, constipation, bleeding, lack of lubrication and more. They lose their sexuality by not being able to intimate with their partner, which leads them to question their body and person which becomes a mental problem. Women who have gone through this usually carry the problem silently and unaided. We must put the light on this situation and see how we can provide them with the right information and help.

This is the cover of a small booklet from the 1920's. It was published by Miles Medical Co., Elkhart, Ind. It describes what wireless (radio) is all about. There are illustrations and references to people such as Tesla. Each facing page also has advertisements and testimonials for Dr. Miles' Laxative Tablets. They treated constipation, biliousness, sour stomach, sick headache, lazy liver, dullness, and dizziness.
One picture inside shows what looks like the Marconi wireless station at Welfleet on Cape Cod. You can easily see the huge inverted pyramid antenna that is attached to the four huge tours.
As the doctor himself said, "We want you to try our Remedies. We want you to do so without cost to you, should you receive no benefit.....We GUARANTEE only the first (single) bottle, which is sufficient to prove whether or not it will benefit you."
You just brought the empty bottle back to the druggist and he gave you the money back.
Citrofortunella microcarpa, the Calamondin or Calamansi, is a fruit tree in the family Rutaceae, commonly called the calamondin, golden lime, panama orange, chinese orange, acid orange, calamonding, or calamandarin in English. It is believed to originate from China and has spread throughout Southeast Asia, India, Hawaii, the West Indies, Central and North America.
The Calamondin bears a small citrus fruit that is used to flavour foods and drinks. Despite its outer appearance and its aroma, the taste of the fruit itself is quite sour, although the peel is sweet. Calamondin marmalade can be made in the same way as orange marmalade. Like other citrus fruits, the calamondin is high in vitamin C. The juice is extracted by crushing the whole fruit, and makes a flavourful drink similar to lemonade. A liqueur can be made from the whole fruits, in combination with vodka and sugar. In Asian cuisines, the juice is used to season fish, fowl, and pork. It is commonly used as a condiment in Filipino dishes like Pancit
Calamondin citrus has found several medicinal uses. When rubbed on insect bites, the juice will relieve the itching and reduce the irritation. It can also be used as a natural acne medicine or taken orally as cough medicine (often mixed with green tea), and is a natural anti-inflammatory. For problems with constipation the juice is warmed and diluted with water. It bleaches freckles and helps to clear up acne vulgaris and pruritus vulvae.
In Malaysia, it is used as an antidote for poison, and a poultice of pandanus leaves mixed with salt and the juice of citrus microcarpa, can be used to treat abscesses. In Peninsular Malaysia, it is combined with pepper to help expel phlegm. Its root is used in the Philippines at childbirth.
Tarquin senses this last week's constipation is all behind him now.
P.B Blakeney-Edwards' Frazer Nash 1935 TT Replica exuberantly piloted.
The Frazer Nash was the direct descendant of the GN cycle car, a twin-cylinder, chain driven vehicle produced until 1922 by the partnership of Captain Archie Frazer-Nash and H R Godfrey. Archie Frazer-Nash then formed a new company and in 1924 the first Frazer Nash appeared. In 1928 Captain Frazer-Nash left the company, which then came under the control of H J and W H Aldington. Between 1924 and 1954, when production effectively ceased, approximately 450 Frazer Nash cars were produced, of which 350 were pre-war ‘chain gang’ models. Of these, 85 had the most popular TT Replica style of bodywork, which was offered between March 1932 and 1939. The TT Replica was based on the cars that contested the 1931 Tourist Trophy Race, though none of the three cars entered actually finished the event. In 1932 the cars fared better, one finishing 2nd in class.
A number of different engines were used by the factory, and the TT Replica was fitted with 1½-litre, four-cylinder, overhead-valve Meadows engine, the 1,660cc six-cylinder, twin-overhead-camshaft Blackburne engine, and the 1½-litre, four-cylinder, single-overhead-camshaft Gough engine. The factory undertook the manufacture of individual cars to order and various combinations of engine and chassis were produced. The first Blackburne-engined TT Replica was registered in May 1933 and the example offered here also was fitted with a Blackburne engine when produced on 20th March 1935. At some later stage, this Replica’s Blackburne unit was replaced with a Gough engine of the period.
Although the chain drive is highly unusual, for a motor car of the period, a chain is more efficient than almost any other form of transmission and the Frazer Nash system was one of the best. References at the time to ‘smoking or red-hot chains lying on the road’ after the rare breakage were mistaken. The reason they were handled with care was because they were dirty, and many chains lasted over 40,000 miles. With their unique form of drive, Frazer Nashes oversteered dramatically under power and it was said at the time that ‘Frazer Nashes never go round corners, they merely change direction.’
While the TT Replica was sold as an all-round performer, it did not achieve significant success in major circuit races. The model’s record in the International Alpine Trials of 1932, 1933 and 1934 is, however, outstanding and equalled by few makes, no doubt due in part to its ability to negotiate the tight Alpine passes under full power. In the 1932 event two cars were entered and lost no marks, while in 1933 a TT Replica was the only car entered not to lose marks. In 1934 four of the team of six cars were un-penalised.
