Sometimes the light and colours conspire, and when it happens ... press the shutter.

A little earlier in the afternoon, the Painted Wall (on the right of this image) may have had some red/orange hues to it from the direct sun, though given the clouds that was probably unlikely.

My teenage son, our dogs, and I were driving rapidly from North Dakota to San Diego, CA after Thanksgiving 2021, and didn't have a lot of time for photo stops on the trip, but I wanted to see this place. Fortunately, we arrived just ahead of sunset. Black Canyon of the Gunnison is a relatively new National Park, having been established in 1999, but the canyon you see is some of the oldest exposed rock that can be found on the planet, dating back nearly 2 billion years!

Pegmatite dikes create the horizontal lines you see in the Painted Wall, the tallest cliff in Colorado at 2,250'. The steepness of this gorge reduces sunlight in some parts to only 33 minutes per day, hence the name Black Canyon. From the viewpoints, it's pretty steep and having dogs with us (even on their 6' leashes) made me feel very uneasy. While the Canyon definitely deserves its name and has limited opportunity for exploration beyond the rim vista points, I felt extremely fortunate to visit on an evening where the sun and clouds conspired to put on a colorful light show to contrast the bleak gorge below.

Another photo near the Visitor center at Hurricane Ridge. We had 3 forest fires this last summer 2016. The official National Park policy is, to let them burn themselves out. Unless they get close to people or park property. Needles to say, they were trying to get this one out.

For some that phrase would describe their eyes after a late night of partying and ringing in the New Year. For me on this first morning of the 20s, it meant first-light reaching Towers of the Virgin in Zion National Park.

Being a native East-Coaster, who has transplanted to life on the West Coast, I still feel that the New Year occurs when the crystal ball drops in New York, and that's the end. So, with the aide of staid Springdale, Utah, it was easy to get an early bedtime on New Years Eve so we could begin the trek to the Canyon Overlook Trail at 6:00 AM to catch first-light and sunrise from this vantage.

The trail is a relatively flat mile hike with a few tricky spots where the ice and slickrock conspire to give even the most sure-footed concern in the dark. Once we reached the overlook, I was a little concerned that our cold trek may have been for naught, due to the heavy cloud cover. Though they were thick overhead, there still was some clearing to the East, along the sun on the horizon to light a narrow band, reflecting off the cloud bottoms and warming the sheer rocks faces of the Temple of the Virgin ahead. This image was captured about 10-15 minutes before the local sunrise time, and is considerably brighter than what we saw with our eyes, due to the 20-second exposure.

Once the actual sun rays reached the Temple directly, the light only lit the areas seen here in red for less than 5 minutes before disappearing above the clouds for the remainder of the day.

Sometimes Fate and Mother nature conspire to sabotage my fun. When I arrived on the island the local buzz was that there was a major swell heading towards the islands from the north. The following day it hit in full force, closing or battering most of the beaches on the island of Oahu which is where I was headed. The 30-40 ft waves that day were the highest recorded since 1969 and trying to approach a beach was risky if not perilous.

This shot was taken from the wayward side of the island on the first morning of my trip before the swell hit the islands. I noticed this petrified tree stump poking out of the sand and thought it would make a nice foreground element. When I returned later that week and the beach was littered with piles of driftwood and most of the trees had no sand under them, standing solely on their roots. Mother nature can be both vicious and ruthless.

Cork, Ireland

aint Fin Barre's Cathedral (Irish: Ardeaglais Naomh Fionnbarra) is a Gothic Revival three-spire cathedral in the city of Cork, Ireland. It belongs to the Church of Ireland and was completed in 1879.

Tradition holds that Lochan (St Fin Barre) was born in the 6th Century . While still in the womb an evil prince conspired to burn his family, but God so favoured the child that he made the elements conspire to make the dry wood of the pyre as wet stones. Fin Barre then spoke out to the prince encouraging him to desist lest he go to hell.

Fin Barre grew up to be a wondrous child and was very learned. Three anchorites brought him to study for the priesthood and it was then he was given the name Fin Barre or in English ‘Bright/Fair Headed’. He is credited with many miraculous healings and wondrous deeds including raising people from the dead.

Fin Barre retreated to Gougane Barra but was visited by an angel who told him to leave everything he owned to Saint Ruadan and to go and find the place of his resurrection. When he reached the great marsh of Munster he was given a cow and a field. He set up a church and a school. He promised that anyone that got buried with him would see the kingdom of heaven. As a result the fame of the settlement spread so that today there is over 35 feet of burials under the Northern Tower of the Cathedral.

Fin Barre died in 606 AD and his feast day is September 23rd .Local tradition says that the Golden angel on the roof, a gift from the architect William Burges, will sound an hour before the trumpets of resurrection for the rest of the world. Thus it will allow the people of Cork to be first in line for heaven!

"Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;

To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,

And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;

To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells

With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,

And still more, later flowers for the bees,

Until they think warm days will never cease,

For summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells."

The Rivers Severn, Avon and Swilgate have all burst their banks today and conspired to surround Tewkesbury Abbey with floodwater. This dramatic scene is a familiar one in the medieval market town.

But on 20th July 2007, two months' worth of rain fell in 14 hours. This ultimately resulted in two emergencies; widespread flooding and water shortages. With flood water reaching over two metres in some places, more than 1,800 homes were flooded.

The Swilgate is the smaller of the three rivers and, without the floodwater, would be visible in the foreground. It flows north to Tewkesbury where it joins the River Avon close to its confluence with the Severn. Swilgate also gives its name to the local cricket ground where the first recorded match was in 1893, when Tewkesbury played Handsworth Wood.

Hold them, we made them

Our hearts beat, control them

They’re too fast

The story of this photo begins with a planning of some months ago.

The idea was to compose the sun, just before sunset, behind Christ the Redeemer statue.

Once the triangulation was done, all I had to do was wait for the date and hope that everything conspired in my favor.

On 10/20/2022, a cloudless sky, contrary to the weather forecast, atypical for a month of October with hardly ever sunny days.

For years I have wanted Beautyberry growing in my yard. But life, weather and insects conspired against me ... until now!

The colors... grape green to deep magenta! The songs of visiting birds! Last years bushes are now in full fruit and their spaced clusters of berries are ripening from green to pinky purple. Even the veins of the leaves have a purplish tint. I love the texture of the edge of the tiny leaf above the green berry cluster in this image. And the deep hazy purple tones in the background.

Quote - Abdul Kalam

I couldn’t believe my luck the other morning when this stylish looking woman randomly walked into my frame. You know that saying about the universe conspiring to help you? I know it might not seem like much, but this felt like a gift to me. I actually felt slightly euphoric after taking this shot. I don’t know about you, but I’m truly happiest when I’m taking photos. ❤

Birnam Wood | The Tragedy of Macbeth

Be lion-mettled, proud, and take no care

Who chafes, who frets, or where conspirers are.

Macbeth shall never vanquish'd be until

Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill

Shall come against him.

That will never be.

Who can impress the forest, bid the tree

Unfix his earth-bound root? Sweet bodements! good!

Rebellion's head, rise never till the wood

Of Birnam rise, and our high-plac'd Macbeth

Shall live the lease of nature, pay his breath

To time and mortal custom.

Golden, golden, golden river run

To the East then drop beneath the sun

And as the moon lies low and overhead

We're lost

Burn slow, burning up the back wall

Long roads, where the city meets the sky

Most days, most days stay the sole same

Please stay, for this fear it will not die

If I had a boat, I would sail to you

Hold you in my arms, ask you to be true

Once I had a dream, it died long before

Now I'm pointed north, hoping for the shore

Down low, down amongst the thorn rows

Weeds grow, through the lilies and the vine

Birds play, try to find their own way

Soft clay, on your feet and under mine

Splitting at the seams

Heaving at the brace

Sheets all billowing

Breaking of the day

Sea is not my friend

And everyone conspires

Still I choose to swim

Slip beneath the tide

Once I had a dream

Once I had a hope

That was yesterday

Not so long ago

This is not the end

This is just the world

Such a foolish thing

Such an honest girl

shrouded in silence...year after year

my murdermask has multiple scars, stains, and slashes

whipped into whirlwinds like cynical cyclones

marching the path that leads to perdition

my heart that was dead starts to beat like a drum

my murdermask crumbles underneath Gods thumb...i go numb
